Self-Analytical Evaluation Journalism continues to be an exciting adventure to me. The more I do, the more I learn. I decided to get involved in Journalism in the seventh grade. Although the yearbooks in middle school were not as big as the ones in high school, I enjoyed working with my peers to produce something we would all cherish for years to come. Journalism taught me the importance of ethics and dedication. Ethics is always good to know, no matter what field you decide to get into in the future and dedica-tion is what makes the difference from your work being good and amazing. If you are dedicated, that means that you are going to give whatever it is that you are doing everything you have. Paying attention to dates and schedules helped enhance my actual production skills. I remem-ber starting this year and realizing that I had forgotten how to do many things. I was able to plan out my weeks and create plans on how to get everything done which helped me give myself that extra time that I needed to adjust back into the journalism zone. In return, it also helped with making deadline. Making deadline is very important in the business world and journalism helped me realize this. It felt good to make deadline on the first assignment because it made me feel like I started the year right so all I had to do was finish strong. This year I did not make every deadline, but I finished every page. I did not feel comfortable leaving my pages not completely finished and then just pass it on the editor to do the rest of the work. I made sure that all the interviews were made, pictures were placed and that nothing was missing like folio quotes or secondary coverage. To me that all had to do with team work. It is unfair for someone who already has a ton on work on their plate to have to finish someone else’s. This is why I liked to help out when I could and used my second and first period to help others get interviews. It’s all about being a team player. Help-ing the team, helps the final results of the production. Journalism reminds me a lot about track. Al-though you have individual events, which can be seen as your writing and photography, you still are a part of a team that needs you to cheer it on and help it on its bad days. Sales and advertising this year was a lot different than last year. Due to all the new social media networks created, trying to sell yearbooks became more exciting to do. There were moments where you would have a whole conversation on the reasons to buy a yearbook and why to buy it early. It was nice to see all the facebook posts and tweets about it because it made you see that this book was important to a lot of people. When pages were being threatened to be cut, it was crazy to see all the students who were not in yearbook or newspaper getting the word out to buy your yearbook. Sales and ads has taught me that it is the best way to link the community together. Journalism is a very valuable course to take because it is not just journalism; it teaches you values that you will use in any field of study. It has taught me the importance of ethics and dedication, enhanced my feelings toward teamwork, showed me that mass communications is actually the major I want to take up in college and inspired me even more to help my community. I plan on double major-ing at the University of South Florida in mass communications and psychology. I have already been interviewed by the golf channel and bright house to be a part of their internship program over the summer for those interested in mass communications and I hope be accepted in one of those soon, but I thank everyone who has impacted my life though the five years that I have been learning journal-ism. It has opened my eyes in more ways than one and I can’t wait to learn more.

These pictures uses creative angles since i had to go under the car with him to take this photo. The picture fills the frame and the light adds a unique glow to the students face. The subject is not dead center so the rule of thirds rule was upheld. This was a fun photo shoot to take because the student did a variety

of different things with cars that made for exciting pictures. Dualenrollment_soriano

When I was assigned the golf page I tried to think of what exciting pictures would I be able to get. The first thing that popped to mind was a picture of a golfer hitting the ball out of the sand with the sand behind him like a wave.

When i finally got it I was crazy excited. They coach loved it and told me that it had to be in the year book. I just wish it was better quality so it could have

Reflection Four

I believe that I was an asset to this staff and the 2013 edition Legend because although I wasn’t there outside of the classroom for many of the team events, I always tried to do something inside the classroom. I enjoyed helping others when they needed interviews and providing food on workdays. I have helped with yearbook sales by twitting and instagraming and I also helped burn CDs when the server was full. I take everything I do seriously. Once you say that you are going to be a part of something, you always have to be commit-ted. I committed to this publication last year and I am proud that I stayed with it this year.

Since this was my senior year, there were many hardships with time and dates. There were times when I had to make up tests in the morning, so I came early to school, stay after school for a workday until 6 p.m. and then go to a peer minister meeting at 7 p.m. that ended at 10 p.m. I learned that there are going to be times that you are going to have crazy schedules that you can’t change. It’s best to stay positive and try to keep a good attitude. This was a life lesson. If you allow yourself to get overwhelmed and think negatively of the situations you are in, you prevent yourself from moving forward and getting everything done effectively. I think I handled the juggling of time a lot better this year than last year so I’m proud of myself for the improvement, but I know I can improve more.

My three goals for the second half of the year was to make deadline five early, participate in yearbook outside school, and make an amazing portfolio. I had started getting my pictures for my deadline early and got the interviews at the beginning of the deadline. Although I did not reach my goal, I was proud of the page that I had produced. I was not very late on my page and everyone graded it. My second goal was very hard to do because of senior year and my crazy schedule. I will reach my goal technically at the senior dinner, but although I wasn’t able to go to a yearbook event besides workdays and relay for life, I did talk to more staff members during the day outside the yearbook classroom. My last goal was reached. I like this portfolio more than last year and it took a lot of time to make and think of. This was definitely an interesting experience.

Y32. Academic Spread – This was the piece that made me realize that mass communications was what I wanted to major in college so it means a lot to me. I enjoyed everything about this page and it was one that did not have as many cor-rection edits on copy as the others.

Y6. Personality Profile – I think the story of Liz and Hector make these students three dimensional. It shows an interesting side of students the rest of the school does not see since they are gone half the day. To me it was an interesting piece sharing the goals of some outstand-ing kids.

Y2. Sports Reporting – Golf was in interesting sport to do this year. I didn’t know anything until I asked the coach a ton of questions the first day. When I first turned in body copy I was re-subbed, but I talked to my editor about what she wanted and I wasn’t re-subbed again throughout the grading process. I like this story and believe it does take the reader back into the season.

This year I learned a lot more skills. Last year I knew all the basics when it came to writing, photos and design, but this year I was able to take the basics and expand to produce more effective writing and more interesting pictures. My first portfolio was a simple background made with a lighting effect. All I had to do was copy the background to all the other pages and scan in art work to make it seem more colorful. This year I used brushes to create different backgrounds so that the pages weren’t so redundant. A butterfly on each page carried a theme of life and growth throughout the portfolio and a variety of pictures showed that I could do more than make a background. Last year, I felt like most of my pages were good, but not great. When I looked at other’s photos and read their stories I learned how I wanted to make my pages this year look. My photos this year were more exciting and interesting. For example on the Drama and Dual Enrollment page every picture is close up and showing an action that would intrigue someone to continue on to maybe actually read the story.
