Meadow Brook Theatre's 'A Fox on the Fairway' A Fox on the Fairway by Ken Ludwig takes the

stage at Meadow Brook Theatre (MBT), Janu-ary 9 — February 3. A throwback to the great English farces

of the 1930's and '40's, this play has every-thing: Mistaken identities, slamming doors, romantic shenanigans…and golf. The uptight members and staff of a private country club have life and golf all figured out. But when a friendly wager turns cutthroat and sides are switched, it’s time to roll up their sleeves and come out swinging. “We’ve done a couple of different shows by

Ken Ludwig through the years,” said direc-tor Travis Walter. “Many subscribers will re-member Lend Me a Tenor and more recently, Baskerville. His plays are always a great story with a lot of great laughs.” The cast includes Lucas Wells, Phil Powers,

Wayne David Parker, Cheryl Turski, Stepha-nie Nichols and Olivia Ursu. Tickets range from $30-$45 and are available by calling the Meadow Brook Theatre box office at (248) 377-3300 or going online at ticketmaster.com. For more information, see mbtheatre.com.

Meadow Brook Theatre is located at 378 Meadowbrook Road on the campus of Oak-land University in Rochester.

Douglas Marble from Unforgotten Heroes will be at the Southfield Library on Monday, January 7, from 2-4 p.m. to discuss veteran services for both veterans and their surviving spouses. Attendees can learn about benefits such as medical care at the VA Hospital, life insurance, education benefits, VA no money down home loans and monthly tax-free income for the rest of the veteran’s life. The four major benefit programs for those who received an honorable discharge

are: disability compensation, veteran’s pension programs, free or low-cost medi-cal care through VA hospitals and medical facilities and education programs. Other benefits include housing and home loans, job training, small businesses

and business loans through the Small Business Administration, counseling and burials & memorials. Veterans applying for the first time will need to submit a copy of the service discharge form documenting service dates and type of dis-charge, or give full name, military service number, branch and dates of service. Active service means full-time service as a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or as a commissioned officer of the Public Health Ser-vice, the Environmental Services Administration or the National Oceanic and At-mospheric Administration. Honorable and general discharges qualify a veteran for most VA benefits. The li-

brary’s program is free and open to the public. For more info call (248) 796-4224 or see southfieldlibrary.org. The Southfield Library is located in the Southfield Municipal Complex at 26300

A Review by Paul Arlon

Without question, the late 1700’s were pret-ty frisky times. With most civilized social structures unyieldingly ranked by a strict class system – fabulous wealth or crushing poverty, the gout-ridden overfed or those starving with scurvy, the wearing of fine raiments or those clothed for their lifetime in patchy rags – the cultural extremes of the time didn't offer many 'in-betweens.'In the American colonies, inspired revolu-

tionaries waged war against an avaricious British Crown to win independent gover-nance for their fledgling nation. Some years later, during an almost constant

state of war as France and England fought over control of the ocean's merchant routes, French peasantry dropped heavy steel blades upon the necks of thousands of royal-ists during the blood-letting upheaval of the French Revolution. But, along with all of this armed conflict,

sword and flintlock, cannon and battleship, dang if there wasn’t a lot of hanky panky and high intrigue in the mix.Poldark, the U.K. produced series airing on

PBS Masterpiece Theatre via Amazon Prime is perhaps the most sweeping portrayal of this historic era of violent change. This cinematically beautiful series follows

the exploits of the darkly brooding and battle-scarred Capt. Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner, pictured), as he returns home to Cornwall, from the War of Independence in the colonies. He arrives back at his centuries-old ances-

tral home, only to find his father dead, his fiancée Elizabeth (played by Heida Reed) betrothed to his cousin, his manor house in complete disrepair, his family mining enter-prise at a standstill, and his estate’s lands al-lowed to lay fallow. In all, the brash and heroic Capt. Poldark has

returned to an inheritance of dire means,

with only the substantial bearing of his fam-ily name upon which to rebuild it. Coming into his derelict manor, he rouses

the two shiftless lifelong family servants who have been living there for free during his military campaign and the subsequent dismantling of his estate. Poldark puts them back to work and undertakes an accounting of his holdings and debts. Saving a flame-haired low-born girl, De-

melza (Eleanor Tomlinson, pictured) from being attacked in the village market, Pol-dark takes her on as a scullery maid. Delemza, a quick learner with a pure heart,

soon rises above her born station and excels within the repairing Poldark household. It’s not long before she and the Captain become more than servant and master. In the course of reclaiming control over his

scant prospects, Poldark runs headlong into the schemes of an enemy from his school days, the prissy, vicious and amoral George Warleggan (Jack Farthing). Warleggan, born a simple blacksmith’s

grandson, has outsized his station in life to become a greedy banker with far-reaching ambitions. Not being of true aristocratic stock, the

House of Warleggan has gained substantial wealth and influence by using any means necessary to achieve power over others, usually with life-changing consequences. Poldark sees the ruthless Warleggan for what he is, and yet can't avoid George's in-terloping in his affairs. And, the whole of the series is the story of

how these two formidable men are in con-flict in every aspect of their personal lives — business, love, family, and social status. It's pure pleasure to watch this story unfold. If you can catch Poldark on PBS or on Ama-

zon Prime, I can't recommend it enough. It's about as good as TV gets.
