4 Summer 2014

If you worked hard and landed a summer job, congratulations! But what do you do once the paychecks start rolling in? Chances are you have some big goals, such as buying your first car or saving for college. Here are some tips on how to save for these expensive goals.

Start small and increase savings over time. If saving doesn’t come naturally to you, it may seem too difficult to set aside a large portion of your earnings for far-off goals. If you feel this way, try saving a small amount, like $50, at first. Then add $25 to this amount with each new paycheck until you’re saving most of your earnings.

Give yourself some spending money. Even if saving is easy for you, you also need to allow yourself to spend some of the money you earn on other things. Choose to spend on things that are important to you – like going to the movies with friends or getting your favorite band’s new album.

If you try saving all of your paycheck, it can backfire and leave you feeling deprived of the things you enjoy. The trick is to keep some money for the things you really care about, while skipping spending on items you don’t feel as strongly about.

Make saving automatic. The easiest way to be sure that you save regularly is to make the savings happen without you having to do anything. Hanscom FCU offers automatic transfers to make saving a breeze and keep you on track to accomplish your big goals.

If you’re ready to get started, stop by any Hanscom FCU branch or call 800-656-4328 to learn how to automate your savings today. Together we can achieve the big goals in your life.

Making a Pretty Penny at YOUR SUMMER JOB?

6 Ways You Can EARN MONEYSometimes the things you want cost more money than you have. Here’s a solution: Use your free time this summer to earn some extra money. How? You can probably think of lots of ways. Here are a few ideas to get you started. Be sure to get an OK from your parents first!

Help out more at home. Ask your mom or dad if you can help with big projects like cleaning out

closets, the garage or attic.

Provide pet services. Maybe you can walk a neighbor’s dog or set up a tub and wash dogs in

your driveway. If you’re old enough, you might offer to feed and play with neighbors’ pets while they’re on vacation.

Wash cars. Grab a bucket and a hose and turn your driveway into a car wash.

Make things to sell. You might choose jewelry, crafts, lemonade or cookies. Set

up a stand and make some colorful signs.

Play with little kids. If you’re not old enough to babysit, you might be a mother’s helper and

entertain small children while their parents are home.

Do yard work in the neighborhood. Water plants, pull weeds, cut the grass. You

can advertise your services by making flyers and delivering them to neighbors’ houses.

save some of your earningsRemember not to spend all the money you earn. Save some of it for something you’ll want later. Keep it safe in your Hanscom FCU savings account.
