MondoGuardiaregia March 2006 Newsletter Editor: Peter M. Farina Pete Grazie - Ciao a Tutti! With each passing month, we’re seeing MondoGuardiaregia grow and grow… and nothing could make me happier. Each month, I always talk about what’s coming, new parts of MondoGuardiaregia, etc., but rarely do I express my sincerest gratitude to all the recipients of this newsletter, both “Guardioli” and nonGuardioli alike. In less then two months, I will be traveling Guardiaregia for an extended stay of two months. While there, I will be creating a short DVD on Guardiaregia, building a photographic database for the site, and indexing the public records so that ANYONE with roots in Guardiaregia can have a complete 300+ year family tree available to them. Following that, we’ll also be seeing the incorporation of MondoGuardiaregia’s parent company, italyMONDO!, and its many sister divisions such as UpstateNYItalians.com and MyItalianAncestor.com. This rocketing growth, though, could not have been possible without the support of everyone who are reading this now. Pete Grazie -

Ciao a Tutti!

With each passing month, we’re seeing MondoGuardiaregia grow and grow… and nothing could make me happier. Each month, I always talk about what’s coming, new parts of MondoGuardiaregia, etc., but rarely do I express my sincerest gratitude to all the recipients of this newsletter, both “Guardioli” and non‐Guardioli alike. Following that, we’ll also be seeing the incorporation of Mon‐doGuardiaregia’s parent company, italyMONDO!, and its many sister divisions such as UpstateNYItali‐ans.com and MyItalianAncestor.com. This rocketing growth, though, could not have been possible without the support of everyone who are reading this now. Never would I have thought that this little hobby blossom

into a corporation dedicated to helping not just descen‐dents of Guardiaregia get in touch with their roots, but ALL Italians living around the globe. So, before you con‐tinue onto the rest of this modest newsletter, let me thank you all for your support this past year. I could have never realized such a dream without you.

MEDIA UPDATE: Guardiaregia will be receiving further publicity as I travel to nearby Schenectady, New York to be a special guest on “Schenectady Today,” which will be airing on Channel 16 (in New York’s Capital Region) on Monday, March 13th at both 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. The Amster‐dam Recorder and The Schenectady Gazette will feature articles discussing this upcoming TV appearance and the phenomenal growth seen by italyMONDO!, too. Then, as if this wasn’t enough publicity, I will also be appearing on “The Salvatore Megna Show” (Local channel: 1570 AM) on Sunday, March 12th (At approximately 11:15 AM) to further discuss my upcoming trip and business endeav‐ors. Since this is an international publication, though, I will be making both the TV interview and radio broad‐cast available ONLINE, so everyone around the globe can hear and see them. MondoGuardiaregia will keep all of it’s members posted with up‐to‐date information regard‐ing both the TV and newspaper highlights.

Sampogna immigrated to Canada in the early 1970s, where he married his wife Rosetta and had three children; Lisa, Roberto, and Alessan‐dro. He currently lives in Woodbridge, On‐

1 1/2 ounces amaretti cookies (about 12 small cookies) 3 ripe, firm peaches (about 5 ounces each), halved and pitted 3 teaspoons sugar (1/2 teaspoon per peach half) 3 teaspoons unsalted butter (1/2 teaspoon per peach half) 2 cups fresh whipped cream

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Butter the bottom of an 8-inch baking dish and set aside.

Using a melon baller, clean out the red flesh from the center of each peach. Arrange the peaches cut side up in the prepared dish. In the bowl of a food processor, add the amaretti cookies and pulse until finely crumbled. Divide the amaretti crumbs between the peaches. Fill the center of each peach with the amaretti cookie crumbs. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon of sugar over each. Dot each peach with 1/2 teaspoon of butter.

Bake until the peaches are tender and the filling is crisp on top, about 30 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream.

ROMAN GLADIATORS

Unbeaten Heavyweight contender Mike Marrone, whose Italian roots lie within the province of Foggia, in Puglia, continues his un-beaten streak with a hard-fought win over Zach Page. Marrone, fighting under the watchful eye of fellow Italian-American Lou

Duva, improved his record to 13-0 with 10 KOs following the eight round decision win.

Brooklyn based Sicilian-American (with roots in the city of Siracusa,) Paul Malignaggi continued his rise to boxing star-dom with an impressive decision over Donald Camarena, im-

proving his record to 21-0 (5 KOs.)

In adding yet another impressive win under his belt, Malign-aggi has set up the potential for a mega-fight in New York City

with fellow junior welterweight star Miguel Cotto.

Stated the ultra-confident “Siracusano” star after the fight, “I’m looking to step it up again. Only name fighters now; If

you’re not a name fighter, don’t bother with Paul Malignaggi.”

ITALIANS IN THE SPORT OF BOXING

On February 13th, Providence, Rhode Island’s own Peter Manfredo (One of the stars of the hit television series, “The

Contender”) stopped fellow New Englander Scott Pemberton in three one-sided rounds, much to the pleasure of him home-

town crowd in the Dunkin’ Donuts Center that night.

“I wanted to take him out early,” said Manfredo of his impres-sive win. “I felt strong tonight.”

After the fight, Manfredo improved to 25-3 (11 KOs) while Pemberton fell to 29-5-1 (24 KOs)

Buffalo, New York recently received fantastic news as their favorite Italian son, heavyweight contender Joe Mesi,

recently was sanctioned to fight in Puerto Rico, allowing him to continue his assent towards boxing’s greatest tro-phy, the heavy championship of the world. Mesi, who at 29-0 suffered multiple subdural hematomas during his

previous fight with Vassiliy Jirov, was sidelined for almost a year until being allowed to fight this past month. In his return bout on April 1st, Mesi is scheduled to fight jour-

neyman Ron Bellamy.

Amsterdam Born Descendent of Guardiaregia Wins Gold at Local

Power‐Lifting Contest

Jim Farina, Great‐Grandson of Guardiaregia born Carlo Sampogna and Francescantonio Galeazza, re‐

cently took 1st place in a local Power‐Lifting event, affectionately named the “Candy Azz Classic,” at the Iron Asy‐lum Gym in Tribes Hill, New York on February 18th. An impressive win, Fa‐rina swept his class (242 lbs. Open) with a 365 lbs. bench, beating out his nearest competitor by 30 lbs. Farina also competed RAW against his many opponents (many of whom came from all over the Northeastern United

States), with RAW meaning he com‐peted without the aid of a lifting shirt or performance enhancing drugs. As a result of this great accomplishment, MondoGuardiaregia would like to send it’s congratulations to Jim, and also to wish him all the best in

his upcoming events.

(WAY TO GO, BRO!)

News and Announcements From the Guardiolo World

MondoGuardiaregia would like to send its congratulations to Gio‐vanni and Maria Vecchiarelli of Toronto on their recent

Golden Anniversary this past month.

TANTI AUGURI!

Anniversary Announcements

Guardiaregia born Giovanni and Maria Vecchiarelli (Pallotta) re-cently celebrated 50 years of marriage this past February with a fam-ily party held at “La Primavera” banquet hall north of Toronto, sur-rounded by their children, grandchildren, and many cousins and pae-sani of Guardiaregia. May their 50 years of love and devotion be an example for all, Guardioli and non-Guardioli alike. So, on behalf of the Guardioli of the globe, MondoGuardiaregia would like to wish them both all the love and happiness in the world for years to come.

WHOOPS!!! Our members are quite used to my many spelling and grammatical errors, but this time I made a BIG mistake! When writing about the Sambogna (Sampogna) family of Palisades Park, New Jersey this past edition of the newsletter, I forgot to mention Carl Sambogna alongside his brothers and sisters. So, as a result, I’m including this one page addition to

our March newsletter as a tribute to Palisades Park “Guardiolo,” Carl Sambogna.

A presto, “Pietro”

Carl and Rosemary Sambogna (Sampogna) on their 57th Wedding Anniversary

(February 20, 2006)

Carl and Rosemary Sambogna (Sampogna) on their Wedding Day (February 20, 1949)

Carl Sambogna (Sampogna) was the son of Guardiaregia born Pompilio Sampogna, who immi-grated to Palisades Park, New Jersey at the turn of the century. Carl was married to his wife of 57 years, Rosemary, in the Church of Saint Nicholas on Brinkerhoff Ave. in Palisades Park, a church which many “Guardioli” of the area help to build and dedicate in honor of our patron

saint, “San Nicola.” Carlo has three children; Mary (Ridgewood, New Jersey,) Phyllis (Middletown, NY,) and Pompilio (Westwood, NJ.)

The Sambogna family, who have now spread far beyond the limits of Palisades Park, are some of the most supporting members of MondoGuardiaregia. So, let us once again thank you all

for you support, and also congratulate Carl and Rosemary on 57th years of Marriage:

AUGURI!
