MondialogoIn quest of intercultural dialogue!

The future of our world is largely based on our capacity to learn to livetogether.

Over the decades and throughout the centuries, intercultural dialogue hasproven to be the principal means of preventing and resolving conflict. In its own way, each individual culture has influenced the history, the humanachievements and the route to our present-day society. Everything that we doand are has been influenced and shaped by the interplay of cultures. What ourfuture looks like will depend, to a crucial extent, on how different cultures liveand deal with one another. After all, we are all part of one world – a world forwhich we are jointly responsible.

This is a responsibility and opportunity we have to face every day. Moderninformation technologies and increasing mobility are bringing people closerand closer together. Wherever different cultures meet and exchange views, new developments occur. This dynamic, continuous process represents anopportunity and a challenge for every one of us. However, intolerance, xenophobia, prejudice and discrimination continue to run rampant. In addition, respect for cultural diversity is further threatened by the wake of globalizationoften leading to cultural erosion and a certain standardization of culture. If we are to preserve our rich cultural legacy, our identities and our traditionswhilst respecting the customs and life styles of others in a climate of mutualrespect and appreciation, intercultural dialogue has to become an integral partof education. If today’s young people are to ensure a peaceful and sustainableworld for tomorrow, no time, efforts or resources should be spared.

Mondialogo, the largest international initiativeto involve young people in intercultural dialogue

Hence, in early 2003 the Daimler AG and the United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) signed the Mondialogoinitiative in support of youth, intercultural dialogue and the effective use ofinformation communication technologies.

MondialogoSchool

Contest 2007/2008

This partner between Daimlerand UNESCO consists of three main decks

– The Mondialogo School Contest– the Mondialogo Engineering Award – and the Mondialogo Web Portal.

Each deck has its own aims and specificity.

First deckAims of the Mondialogo School Contest

– Raise awareness of the importance of cultural diversity and the valueof intercultural education.

– Mobilise schools to assume an active role in fostering intercultural dialogue and develop the professional capacity of teachers to include interculturaldialogue as an integral part of the learning process.

– Contribute to international understanding and peace by promoting fruitfulexchanges between cultures.

– Enhance quality education through a project-based approach on issues ofworld concern.

– Initiate and sustain cross-border friend between young people andbetween teachers.

➔ SpecificityThe Mondialogo School Contest involves secondary school students agedbetween 14 and 18 years old and classroom teachers. Students are invitedto form a team of 4 to 30 members and with a supervising teacher they aretwinned with a team in another country in order to forge an interculturaldialogue and work together on a joint project. However, the MondialogoSchool Contest is more than a contest since it is designed to contributeto improving the quality of education for the 21st century by integratingintercultural dialogue as an integral part of the learning process. Emphasisis placed on making the curriculum more relevant and more pertinent tothe needs of today and of tomorrow and on enabling young people to betteracquire life skills and competencies so much required in a constantly changingworld challenged by the conflict of civilizations.

In order to prepare the Mondialogo School Contest, it was only naturalto rely on UNESCO’s Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) with its some8,000 schools in 177 countries and its five decades of experiencein conducting innovative educational projects in support of a culture of peaceand intercultural education. A wide range of schools urban and rural, largeand small, high-tech and low-tech, public and private, participate in ASPnetand all of them are committed to pursuing the ideals of UNESCO for a betterworld. Out of the 60,000 participants of the two previous Mondialogo rounds,75% of them belong to schools participating in the Network of UNESCOAssociated Schools (ASPnet).

Six Mondialogo students were invitedto the UNESCO World Youth Festivaland to the World Soccer Cup, Stuttgart,Germany, July 2005, where theybecame the first Mondialogo JuniorAmbassadors.

Second deckAims of the Mondialogo Engineering Award

– Enable prospective engineers to exchange knowledge on all continentsto campaign for understanding, respect and tolerance between cultures.

– Design projects and prepare proposals that can contribute to theattainment of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable development.

– Reflect, create and share innovations and indigenous knowledge thataddresses development needs (such as the provision of water, food, energy, medical services and housing) and taking into account cultural relevance.

– Reinforce the ethical and humanistic dimensions of engineering studiesand partner between engineering students in different continents.

➔ SpecificityThe Modialogo Engineering Award places engineering at the serviceof humanity. It is open to undergraduate university students (young menand women) in engineering who are keen to foster intercultural dialogue.By pooling together their views, concerns and competencies with their peersabroad, the students are given a unique opportunity to elaborate concreteproject proposals aimed at improving a better way of life, particularly forthe less fortunate. The most pertinent and original Mondialogo EngineeringAward project proposals submitted are granted awards and funds in supportof their implementation.

Third deckAims of the Mondialogo Web Portal

– Provide a platform of exchanges for young people keen to enter into contact with their peers around the world.

– Enable the Mondialogo School Contest and the Mondialogo EngineeringAward students to access instantly relevant information concerningtheir respective decks (contests) and to seek assistance.

– Facilitate and enhance communication between Mondialogo School Contest and Mondialogo Engineering Award teams of students.

– Experiment further the effective use of information and communicationtechnologies (ICTs) and initiate, when necessary, students and teachersto ICTs.

– Offer information and data concerning intercultural dialogue, sustainability and the UN Millennium Development Goals.

➔ SpecificityThe technological gap remains enormous at all levels including schools, even within the same country. Yet ICTs are revolutionizing the learning processas they provide an extraordinary access to information, knowledge and databanks which are indispensable for research, learning and analysis.Hence, Mondialogo relies heavily on the use of ICTs and encouragesthe sharing of know-how and resources between those students who haveaccess with those students who are still deprived.

Daimler is an automobile company with worldwideoperations. The company sees itself as an activepart of the world community and feels

responsible for helping to shape the process of globalization so thatit benefits everybody – regardless of where people live. The main learning objectives of the Mondialogo School Contest in supportof intercultural dialogue are directly aligned with the four pillars of learningadvocated by the UNESCO International Commission on Education forthe 21st century. The contest strives to reinforce these pillars or and hence contribute substantially to quality education.

Lifesaver 1 Learning to know: improving the relevanceof education

“I, you and we”“I” – learning more about ourselves, our ancestors, our traditions, customs

and our deep cultural roots;“you” – learning about our peers in another country/continent; “we” – learning about what “we” (I & you) have in common, respecting

our differences and conducting together a joint project.

Past, present and futureWe can only understand the present if we know well about the past and planningfor a sustainable future calls for a critical analysis of both past and present.

Vital concerns facing humanityStudents exchange views on vital topics such as peace and the need fora sustainable future.

Lifesaver 2Learning to do: acquiring life skills andcompetencies

The Mondialogo School Contest is project oriented and calls for motivation, creativity and the acquisition of life skills and competencies. By working together on a joint project with their team abroad, studentsare encouraged to conduct research and interviews, collect and analyze dataand information, sharpen their communication and language skills, practice problem-solving techniques and take part in a series of creativeactivities including role play, art work, composing music, developing games, etc. To enhance optimum communication with their team abroad, studentsare encouraged to use information communication technologies (ICTs)to the fullest extent possible, and when not accessible, develop otherimaginative approaches to communicating with each other e.g. producinga joint newspaper, sending photo albums, etc.

Mondialogo School Contest’sLearning Objectives

MondialogoSchool

Contest 2007/20085

The MondialogoSymposium tuned us moresocially. For example, afterthe students' workshopon Children's Rights,my student Radi sharedwith me what he learnedabout child soldiers. Hearing itdirectly from somebodywho experiencedthat personally, to meetthe person face to faceis totally different than hearingit on the news. It hada dramatic effect on us.I realized that the problemswe are moaning aboutin Europe are simply ridiculouscompared to those of peoplein Africa. And yes, I can saysuch meetings make us moreresponsible for the worldand build up our civic duty.Daniela Stefanova,

teacher, Bulgaria.

Lifesaver 3 Learning to be open, objective and respectful

Intercultural learning does not just require knowledge, know-how and skills, but most important it calls for attitudes conducive to openness, objectivity, critical thinking, respect and tolerance. Subsequently to the first two rounds(2004 & 2006) of the Mondialogo School Contest both teachers and studentsexpressed how much the contest had impacted positively on them,on their perceptions of others and on the importance of engagingin intercultural dialogue.

Mondialogo made me more open to accept various values, to express myselfand to love. It helped me a lot to understand the world, human beings and myself. Now I feel the world is a lot more closer to me. Mondialogo made me realizethat it is possible to live together. I learned that it is really good to participatein Mondialogo and let my comprehension grow toward the world, human beingsand myself.Miho Toyooka,

student, Japan.

Lifesaver 4Learning to live together for a peaceful, prosperous and harmonious world

The 20th century was plagued by the use of nuclear weapons for the first timeand the 21st century is witnessing the proliferation of such deadly weapons.Furthermore, climate change and global warming, conflicts and tensionsare triggering natural disasters and scarcity of safe drinking water. It hastherefore become more urgent than ever to strengthen the role of educationin contributing to: non-violent conflict resolution, respect for diversity,a rational consumption of natural resources and a sustainable future. The Mondialogo School Contest strives to put into practice learning to livetogether” as well as learning throughout life!

There is a need for intercultural dialogue. In the next contest, I will initiatea dialogue on issues that plague my community (e.g. teenage pregnancy, drugabuse, etc.). Mondialogo is an experience to treasure because it proves that peopleof different backgrounds can talk and live together.Thobejane Nokulunga,

● Third portChoose a theme, plan your joint activities and agree on a schedule!

This is a crucial port in your journey! Upon making contact with each other, both schools should decide on a joint theme for their intercultural dialogueproject.

Themes!

A wide range of inspiring topics are proposed under three main categories:

– Peace, sports and fair play, and elimination of discrimination.– Identity, respect for cultural diversity and emigration versus immigration.– Our sustainable future.

For more ideas see the pages concerning these thematic areas. Interculturaldialogue is closely linked to our heritage and present-day life and good useshould be made of students’ creativity, imagination and vision.

Plan joint project/activities!

Once you have agreed on the theme for your joint project, plan some jointactivities which can take a variety of forms e.g. conduct research on eachother’s country, produce an interactive game, make an original piece of artwork, video clip or web site.

For more ideas, visits can be made to the Mondialogo Internet Portal:www.mondialogo.org and the UNESCO web site: www.unesco.org

Agree on a schedule!

Until May 2008 you have the time to conduct your joint intercultural dialogueproject. However, school years, exams and vacations are not the same aroundthe world. Whilst students in the Northern hemisphere are on vacation duringtheir summer, young people in the Southern hemisphere are in the midstof winter and attending school. Hence, by using the Mondialogo calendar2008 it is easy to schedule the main phases of your project, joint activitiesto be conducted, and reaching, on time, a concrete result.

● Fourth portSubmit your results!

Prior to the completion of your project, you should decide with your partneredteam on who should be responsible for completing, in English or in French, the Mondialogo School Contest Joint Project Report Form, included atthe end of this School, to be sent to UNESCO prior to 31 May 2008 alongwith photographs of each team and your tangible result/s.

Select a themefor your joint project

MondialogoSchool

Contest 2007/20088

Intercultural dialogue enables young people to exchange their views, ideasand concerns on a wide range of crucial issues, and which permits themto understand each other better--each other’s culture, values, life stylesand hopes for the future. The more a topic is discussed in-depth, the deeperthe dialogue becomes – like an anchor the deeper it holds, the strongerit becomes!

Hence, the choice of the theme for the Mondialogo project to be conductedis very important – and once again like an anchor it will link the two teamsand hold your project together. In the light of the topics most often chosenby students in the two preceding rounds/journeys of the Mondialogo SchoolContest, the three following main thematic areas are suggested forthe 2007/2008 contest’s joint projects:

– Peace, sports & fair play and elimination of discrimination,– Identity, respect for cultural diversity, emigration versus immigration,– Our sustainable future.

In approaching these issues and in search of possible solutions, the roleof UNESCO and the United Nations (UN) system, as well as other internationalbodies, can be taken into account. For example, the observance, by the twopartnered teams, of International Days declared by the UN General Assemblycould be stimulating and help to mobilize concern for such topics withinthe respective schools and communities. Hence, appropriate internationaldays are listed under each main theme as well as relevant web sitesfor additional information and data. For easy reference, such days are alsoindicated on the Mondialogo 2008 Calendar.

Let’s now take a closer look at how the suggested themes can serveas sources of inspiration for dialogue, exchanges and conducting your jointproject. It is obvious that themes can also be combined since there are manylinkages and interrelations between them.

Peace, sports & fair play and eliminationof discrimination

Peace in the minds of young peopleThe Preamble of the UNESCO Constitution declares “Since wars are bornin the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peacemust be constructed.” Intercultural dialogue contributes directly to peace

and non-violence. It is essential in bringing the peoples of the world togetherin a spirit of mutual caring and sharing. Peace, at the personal level(the individual, within the family, in the classroom) and local level (withinthe community, within the country), is a prerequisite for attaining peaceat the global level. Respect for human rights, gender equality and inclusion(all children have the right to education) are also vitally linked to peacebuilding and peace keeping. Partnered teams can identify current andnew forms of threats to peace and to well-being and propose practical waysand means to eliminate/prevent such threats. Mondialogo School Contestprojects in this area can also make meaningful contributionsto the observance of the UN International Decade for a Culture of Peaceand Non-Violence for the Children of the World 2001-2010, for whichUNESCO is the lead agency.

Sports and fair playThe Olympic proverb recalls that the practice of sports helps to build,

in principle, ‘a healthy body and a healthy mind’ Sports contributeto capacity building in many essential areas such as team work,

team spirit, respect of rules and regulations, performing underpressure, discipline and solidarity. Young people are often

interested in sports and top athletes are today amongstthe leading role models for the younger generation. Moreover, all cultures have or had traditional gamesand sports which were directly linked to their roots, valuesand traditions. However, many of them have disappearedbut could be revived and shared in an effort to learn moreabout the cultural relevance of the past.

As mentioned earlier in the School, the IOC is supportingthe Mondialogo initiative! Hence the Olympic banner/logo-5 circles

intertwined, each one a different colour and each onesymbolizing one of the five continents is among the flags flying

high on the Mondialogo . There are many interesting facetsconnected to the Olympics which can serve as topics for joint projects.

However, sports can unfortunately also lead to some of the negativeaspects of society e.g. doping, cheating, corruption, exclusion (everyoneshould have access to sports), commercialization, hooliganism, and violence(in the stadium and on the playing field) which need to be addressed and forwhich solutions are urgently required. There are indeed many sports relatedissues which can be of considerable interest and concern to young people andlead to creative projects.

The year 2008 is anOlympic year, many countries

around the world are in the processof selecting their champions to take partin the Olympic Games in Beijing, China

in August 2008. The ancient Olympic Gameswere held for the last time in 394 AD

and 1,500 years later they were reinstatedin Athens, Greece, due to the Frenchman,

Pierre de Coubertin, who pled for the gamesto be revived in a spirit of international

cooperation and friend. The Games areorganized by the International Olympic

Committee (IOC), Lausanne,Switzerland.

Elimination of discriminationDiscrimination is one of the most serious threats to peace entailingintolerance, prejudice, exclusion and often stereotypes. By conductingconcrete activities to involve young people in reflecting and taking actionto promote respect for differences, unity in diversity and social inclusion, important contributions can be made to prevent/eliminate the root causesof racism and xenophobia. Attention can also focus on promoting the valueof multicultural societies and minority groups (e.g. indigenous peoples).

Identity, respect for cultural diversityand immigration vs. emigration

Identity and respect for cultural diversityCulture is one of the strongest fibres in our identity and it is not limited to art, music and literature. Our identity, daily life, outlook, values and life styles arevery much influenced by our culture which encompasses customs, traditions, governance, religion and beliefs, creativity, sports, tangible heritage (such asthe sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and many other localand national sites) as well as the intangible heritage (oral traditions andexpressions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events, knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe, traditionalcraftmanship etc.) and our environment. Today our culture is also influencedby science and technology, informatics, and the media. Culture contributesgreatly to who we are, how we feel and to who we are to become. Due tomigrations, many societies are also becoming more and more multiculturalwhich has many advantages but also certain challenges which need to beaddressed. Through intercultural dialogue projects, we can gain much bylearning more about where we come from, who we are and who we want tobecome whilst learning about identity formation from our partnered team.Much of the wealth of the world is found in its diversity. Yet the winds ofchange and globalization are blowing strongly and the beauty of diversity iseroding rapidly. Around the world, young people are often eating the sametype of food, wearing similar clothing, watching the same movies andtelevision programmes, drinking the same soft drinks, speaking the samelanguage--and the list is long. Students might want to reflect on why and howto preserve cultural diversity whilst benefiting from the opportunities providedby globalization.

Immigration versus emigrationThroughout the 20th century and now into the 21st century, our societieshave become more and more multicultural due to massive migrationsof people. However, such migration patterns have not always been easyfor those who emigrated (and often they were forced to leave their homelands)and who became immigrants (new settlers) as well as for those who were leftbehind. Even within countries, migrations are taking place particularly withregard to rural populations who are flocking to towns and cities.

By taking a closer look at our local and national population and the inhabitantsof the country of our partnered team, we are able to trace waves of populationmovements (due to immigration/emigration) and hence gain a betterunderstanding of their hard, kin and impact on local/nationalculture and life styles. Such projects enable young people to conduct researchand share their views on such vital issues, not only with regard to the past andpresent but also on possible future trends and tendencies.

Our Sustainable future

One of the biggest challenges facing the world today is a sustainable futurefor all. It was a woman who coined the term “sustainable development”20 years ago. Gro Harlem Brundtland, former president of Norway, chairedthe World Commission on Environment and Development. Its 1987 reportdefined sustainable development as development that meets present needswithout compromising the ability of future generations to meet their ownneeds. It established three dimensions of such development: environmentalprotection, economic development, and social justice.

MondialogoSchool

Contest 2007/2008

UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, has labeled climate change as “the defining issue of our era.”UNESCO is committed to contributing to tackling this challenge. It is developing its own strategy andapproach to assist countries around the world to adapt to the actual and potential effects of climatechange, and helping to promote sustainable development. Since climate change affects not only ourenvironment, but also our way of life, UNESCO’s programme focuses on the following:

1) education for sustainable development including changes in consumption patterns;2) providing information on the issue and raising public awareness;3) building a knowledge base on key scientific parameters allowing an assessment of climate change

and its manifold dimensions;4) identifying social and cultural approaches to address climate change.

Daimler is one of the world’s leading automakers. The Group’s commercial success is founded on people’strust in all the countries where it operates. That’s why its vision is one of sustainable development –worldwide. Making mobility sustainable – that is Daimler’s most important goal in the ecological sector. For Daimler, the key challenge is the reduction of fuel consumption and the emission of CO2 and otherpollutants. The company is aware of its responsibility in these areas and is making every effort to developdrive systems, production processes and fuels that reduce the burden on our environment to a minimum. That’s the only way sustainable mobility can be successfully delivered in the 21st century.

Mondialogo encourages the participating schools to contribute to resolving the environmental crisesaffecting the world today. You have a key role to play in this effort and challenge. The future of the worldis after all your future!

See the special publication on climate change published by UNESCO on:http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0015/001517/151707e.pdf

Rampant consumption, depletion of natural resources, extreme poverty, proliferation of HIV and AIDS, climate change, natural disasters, andgender inequality compromise a healthy, peaceful and sustainable futurefor present and future generations. Children and young people, who willsoon become tomorrow’s decision-makers, have a special role to play.Consequently the UN General Assembly declared 2005-2014

as the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. Educationhas a vital role to play in preparing young people to survive well into

the 21st century and Mondialogo School Contest projects can make valuablecontributions to the UN Decade for which UNESCO is the co-ordinating Agency.

Furthermore, the goals of the Decade are closely tied to the eight MilleniumDevelopment Goals (MDGs) proclaimed by the UN in 2000 which can beresumed as follows:

1. Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger 2. Achieve Universal Primary Education 3. Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women 4. Reduce Child Mortality 5. Improve Maternal Health 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other Diseases 7. Ensure Environmental Sustainability8. Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Hence, Mondialogo School Contest joint projects can be conducted on oneof several issues which all contribute to a sustainable future and to improvingthe quality of education, such as:

Socio-cultural perspectives

– behavioural changes required to achieve a sustainable future and takinginto account cultural contexts;

– education for all - providing all children with access to education by 2015;– gender equality;– population growth and distribution.

Economic perspectives

– poverty reduction;– control of greenhouse gases;– land and energy use;– pollution and transport use;– renewable energies;– responsible consumption;– corporate responsibility and accountability.

Environmental perspectives

– protection/conservation of natural resources;– actions to address global warming and climate change;– rural development;– natural disaster prevention.

1. Team to teamA new project, a new partner. How do you start a project with a partneryou have never met? How do you get to know the school, the teachers, the students? This can be as simple as sending introductory letters or e-mailsto each other, asking them what they would like to know about you, describingyour country, your school and your community and also by exchangingthe following questionnaire.

The following questionnaire can be completed and exchanged by both teamsat the beginning of the Mondialogo School Contest in order to enable studentsto start to know each other. This questionnaire can also be downloadedfrom : www.mondialogo.org/msc/download

2. Compare your daily livesHave you ever wondered what students from another country or another partof the world do during a normal day? How does their life differ from yoursor how is it similar ? Find out by comparing your daily schedule with thatof your partnered team.

Explain the daily schedule of your team. Feel free to use any typeof description e.g. by the hour, by parts of the day. Indicate what a normal daylooks like for your team, during the week and on the week-end.

• During the morning .......................................................................................................

3. Names as Identity CarriersThe objective of this activity is to reflect on personal and family identities.

Ask your students to trace, with the help of their parents or relatives, themeaning of their family names. Also ask them to explain how their individual(first, second) names were chosen. How does each student feel about his orher name? Is it a name frequently found in the region or is it unusual? Was itgiven in memory of a certain person, such as a grandparent or other relative,or a personality from history, cinema, etc? Does the name affect the person’sidentity? Is it a name that is connected in any way to an important cultural ornatural site in the region? If so, in what way?

A similar exercise can also be proposed, using topography with names of yourvillage/city as identity carriers: invite students to reflect on the name of theirtown/village, region and country. What does it signify? Encourage students toconduct research within their families, in libraries, on the Internet…

4. Heritage Sites and country contacts and exchangesEach school describes a local or national site that students feel representstheir culture and exchanges such information with their partnered team.It could also be a site on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Imagine you are inviting the students from your partner school and thatyou have only one day to show them all the features of your culture:

– what would you choose to show them and why ?

– what would be the most important places, items for you (orderof preference)?

What exactly do you know about the country of the school you are pairedwith? Do you know if your country has had exchanges in the past withyour partnered school’s country? If so, what type: tourism, trade, treaties, conflicts, economic/cultural exchanges? If not, what exchanges could takeplace in the future?

Once a theme is chosen, the (teachers) and the (students)start to plan their joint project using maximum imagination and creativity. The results often speak for themselves and become real displaying dialogue, innovativeness and meaningfulness. The two previousjourneys of the Mondialogo School Contest have lead to many goodpractices and the following descriptions of project results achieved are justa few examples of ways and means to initiate and develop effectiveintercultural dialogues.

Setting up a new school for street children

As part of their concern for the struggle against poverty and the achievementof the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG), teams from Indonesia(Jakarta) and Italy (Trento) decided to pool their efforts together to createa new school for street children in Jakarta. In order to sensitize their peersto the plight of underprivileged children in Jakarta, the Italian team set upan information stand at their school and embarked on a fund raisingcampaign. The Indonesian school also raisedsupport in their community and they were able toopen the (which they namedin honour of their Mondialogo Italian partneredteam) for local street children. The two teamscommunicated frequently (weekly) through lettersand e-mail and they showed how to put theconcept of solidarity into practice. Their initiativecontributed directly to providing children withaccess to primary school education which is oneof the MDG eight goals as well a priorityof UNESCO’s Education for All (EFA)programme.

Triangular communication buildsrespect for cultural diversity

How can two schools in two different parts of theworld, one in Wisconsin in the centre of the USAand the other in Iran in central Asia, communicateeffectively? The American students spoke Englishand the Iranian students spoke mainly Farsi,

Indonesian and Italian teams won firstplace in the Mondialogo School Contest2005/2006 (see Rome ReportSymposium).

their national language; yet they were all very keen to communicate on anissue of worldwide importance, water conservation. Much of theircommunication problem was solved by an Iranian living in Bolivia who wasa relative of a community member in Wisconsin and through e-mail andtriangular telephone calls (Iran, Bolivia and USA) the communication barrierwas surpassed and students not only learned a lot about water issuesin each other’s countries but also got to know each other and becamefriends!

The crucial role of the /Teacher

The role of the teacher in the Mondialogo School Contest is very important.Teachers are the main facilitators. They provide guidance and assistance, help to establish good communication channels and respond to the needsand initiatives of the students. Although each team of students requiresone supervising teacher, it is hoped that the teacher will draw on the expertiseof several other teachers from a wide range of disciplines e.g. history, geography, language, science, art, music, physical education etc.Such collaboration will lead to an interdisciplinary and holistic approachto intercultural learning and to team teaching, essential ingredientsfor learning in the 21st century.

Working languages and “I”, “you” and “we” concept

Working languagesAt the beginning of your joint project, you should decide on which languageyou want to use for the intercultural dialogue with your partner team. Many secondary schools around the world offer foreign language teachingand Mondialogo provides an excellent opportunity to enable studentsto practice and improve language learning. Any language chosen should bespoken to some extent by both partner teams. However, bear in mind thatthe physical result/s obtained and submitted along with the Mondialogo JointProject Report Form have to be presented in either English or French (whichare UNESCO’s working languages).

“I”, “you” and “we” conceptDuring the project work the students should evolve together with their partnerteam. Ideally the project work should include the I, YOU, WE process consistingof the following phases:

• I

The “I” is about increasing the awareness and appreciation of one’s ownculture(s). Culture should be approached in the broadest sense of the termtaking into account the meaning of:

– both past and present– living and dynamic cultures

On deck!

Mondialogo has madea drastic change in my lifein a positive way,in my personality andin my future professionalcareer plans and has showedme that even if we aredifferent, united we are one, inseparable and invincible.Lorelis Tejada Cruz,

– values– language(s)– customs– traditions, festivals, national days– religions etc.

Many cultures reflect the interaction of other cultures. By learning moreabout our cultural roots, we can reaffirm our identity, take pride in our cultureand its contributions to our universal civilization and be motivated to developour talents and capacity for cultural and creative expressions. It is the firststep towards openness and tolerance.

• YOU

The YOU involves a better understanding of your partner team’s culture(s).The intention is to learn and appreciate other cultures, cultural forms

and expressions. By creating a bond with a school in anotherpart of the world, students and teachers have a uniqueopportunity to learn and explore other cultures, to gainan insight into their values, creative expression and lifestyles.Students also have the possibility of acquiring new life skillsin seeking information and undertaking research aboutthe culture(s) of their partner school.

• WE

This phase is the one in which the most intensive dialogueand exchanges take place. It reflects the effective exchangebetween partner teams from different cultures and countriesand the development of a joint project. Within this phase, intercultural dialogue enables students to not only exchange

their views but to share ideas and reflexions on a wide range of crucial issuese.g. peace, non-violent resolution of conflict, alleviation of poverty, sustainabledevelopment, health and solidarity.

Advanced Communication Channels

Mondialogo encourages an intercultural dialogue within the school, the localcommunity with the partner team in another continent and other teams aswell. Some schools are already multicultural, comprising students fromdifferent origins and thus provide an ideal setting to enhance and reinforceintercultural dialogue locally. However, it is important for all teams to find waysto create new bonds with their partner team. The frequency of exchangesbetween teams will be given due consideration in the appraisal.

In order to enable as many school students as possible to participate andbenefit from this enriching experience of making new contacts with people inanother part of the world, Mondialogo aims to provide optimum conditions fordialogue between teams. Dialogue can either take place via:

– Internet, depending on your abilities and access to ICTs.– Post– Telephone– Fax

Mondialogo Internet Portal, the central communication platformTo provide the best possible support and encouragement for communicationexchanges amongst participants, a central platform for the Mondialogo SchoolContest has been set up.

At www.mondialogo.org/msc partner teams and their supervising teacherswill be able not only to view and download all the available information andbrochures, but will also find important addresses, contact persons and a listof all participating schools, which will be shown on a World Map.The Mondialogo portal is the ideal platform to present your team to yourpartner team and to arrange a continuous dialogue. It will keep you informedof what is going on within the Mondialogo School Contest around the world.

• Team Area

There will probably be a constant stream of new, up-to-date messagesfrom your partner team and new milestones to be planned in your mutualproject work. The Team Area is your team’s reserved (and log-in protected)work and communication base on the Mondialogo website. Here, you canexchange ideas, information and even files directly with your partner team. The Team Area is located in the Community Section of the website atwww.mondialogo.org/team-area.

Inside the Team Area, every partner team with Internet access can quitesimply create its own Team Page through which you can introduce yourselfto everyone browsing on the Mondialogo World Team Map. You can decidewhich elements you want to publish on your public Team Page, whether it’syour daily schedule, pictures of your team or the completed questionnaire (seesection 9: “Start up your engines!”).

• Chat/Fora

Furthermore, a chat and different fora are offered through which bothstudents and teachers can communicate with one another, exchangeexperiences and findings and provide each other with information about theirrespective projects.

• Mondialogo

There are more exciting features to discover on our website underwww.mondialogo.org, which are intended to provide a lot of fun for studentsand teachers as well as help you with your work on the project. TheMondialogo ! regularly publishes feature articles, reports andinterviews.

• Knowledge and technical requirements

No particular Internet knowledge is required to use the Mondialogo InternetPortal. We have made every effort to design a user-friendly and self-explanatory site. However, the following technical requirements have to be metto access the website:

– A computer with an Internet connection and a Web browser (e.g. InternetExplorer, Version 4 and higher, or Netscape Navigator, Version 4.7 andhigher, or Firefox, etc.)

– An individual e-mail address (this can be set up free of charge with a freee-mail provider).

• Telephone, fax and mail

If your school does not have an Internet connection, dialogue betweenthe two partner schools can either take place via post, telephone or fax.Sometimes students or teachers have computers at home or access to themin the community, at cyber cafés, in ministries, at UNESCO Offices, NationalCommissions for UNESCO etc.

• Support

Solidarity is an important feature of Mondialogo, and a partner school with ICTis invited to share their knowledge and know-how with non-ICT partnerschools. You are encouraged to try and to use an Internet connectionin your neighbourhood. If you publicize the contest locally, you might be ableto find someone who will support you and your team. In addition, the UNESCOAssociated Schools Project Network (ASPnet) National Coordinatorin your country may be able to assist in facilitating effective communicationbetween partner schools (see section 15: “Important addresses”, UNESCOAssociated Schools National Co-ordinators contact details). The Daimlernational branch companies are also informed about the Mondialogo SchoolContest and are invited to offer support whenever possible. Please getin touch with the Mondialogo Team for appropriate contact addresses.

• Involve local partners and community

Experience shows that school projects are often enhanced and improvedby involving the local community. First and foremost, parents can often playa helpful role as well as other community members e.g. elders, artists, storytellers, librarians, universities, non-governmental organizations, embassies, consulates and the local media (press, radio, television), not onlyto serve as sources of information but also to advise and report on schoolpartner activities.

Your ASPnet National Co-ordinator will also be informed by UNESCOHeadquarter in Paris of all phases of the project and should be able to provideyou, whenever possible, with advice and assistance in this initiative.

The appraisal procedureand criteria

MondialogoSchool

Contest 2007/200813

Criteria for the appraisal of the results ofthe Mondialogo School Contest’s 3rd journeyand selection of nominees and winners

In completing the Mondialogo Joint Project Report Form, teachers andthe two partnered teams should bear in mind the criteria which will be usedfor the appraisal of the third round of the Mondialogo School Contest andfor the selection of the 50 nominated teams and the 3 main winners(6 partnered teams) of the contest. Special attention and a close scrutinywill be given to the following six criteria:

1. Well completed, documented and legibleMondialogo Joint Project Report Form and tangibleresult/s

The two partnered teams should decide well in advance which team will beresponsible for:

– co-ordinating the preparation of the Mondialogo Joint Project Report Form;

– obtaining the necessary inputs from the other team;

– submitting the Report, on time, to UNESCO and prior to 31 May 2008.

The tangible result/s of the intercultural dialogue project (e.g. photo album, art work, game, research outcome, etc.) should be sent along with the Reportand will be examined closely.

You can develop and submit a joint result or two separate results. Any piecesof original art work e.g. sculptures, collages, maquettes, etc. should notexceed one square meter and any electronic material e.g. video, CD-ROM, etc.transmitted should be concise and of limited duration (5 minutes maximum)to enable a thorough viewing of it. A print-out of all CD-ROMs submittedshould also be enclosed.

2. Relevance to intercultural dialogue, value and impact of the educational projectusing the “I”, “you” and “we” concept

A close look will be given on how this concept was approached (learning andappreciating more about one’s own culture and the culture of the partneredteam) and coming together to achieve a joint result on a meaningful topic.Intercultural dialogue impacts on the views, ideas, attitudes, behaviour, etc.

38

Page 40: Mondialogo School Contest 2007/2008: schoolkit for …unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0015/001581/158145e.pdfMondialogo School Contest 2007/2008 SchoolKit for teachers TABLE OF CONTENTS

of everyone taking part in it and explanations should be given on howthe contest has impacted on the young people, the supervising teacher, other teachers and students in the school, the community, etc. would behelpful. Although extra-curricular activities are often conducted in supportof Mondialogo School Contest activities, any inclusion of Mondialogoin classroom teaching should be indicated since the contest strivesto incorporate intercultural dialogue in the learning process and wheneverpossible across the curriculum. Students should be the main actorsin developing intercultural dialogue and mention should be made of life skills(i.e. language, communication, problem-solving, leadership, etc.)developed/acquired by students.

3. Team work/partner within the team and betweenpartner teams

The Mondialogo School Contest relies heavily on teamwork whichis also an important aspect of quality education. How do the results submittedreflect teamwork? Were all team members involved in the projectimplementation and results? How did the project affect relations betweenstudents, between students and teachers, between the team, parents and thecommunity as well as between teams? What type of partner was achievedas a result of the Mondialogo Project?

4. CreativityQuality education encourages students to be creative and

inventive in developing their intercultural dialogue and in achieving tangibleresults. How much creativity and innovation was reflected in communicatingand achieving tangible results?

5. Communication capacity building andquality/intensity of dialogueEffective communication is the foundation of intercultural

dialogue. How frequent and intensive was the dialogue which took placebetween the partnered teams? How much initiative was taken by each team? What were the main communication channels used (e.g. e-mail, fax, phone, post) and how often were they used?

6. Difficulties encountered and solutions soughtIntercultural dialogue between young people in different

countries/continents can encounter some challenges and obstacles such asdifficulty in communication due to a lack of information communicationtechnologies (ICTs), a common working language, school holidays, time inthe classroom/out-of-school, etc What were the main difficulties andwas it possible to solve them? How can they be avoided in the future?
