F O R Y O U R F I R S T N O T E S .

Who was involved?

The 4 strongest European nations involved in colonialism included:

 England

 Spain

 Portugal

 France.

Let’s find these on map!

European Map

Use your workbook as a group to label and color the following countries:

 England France

Spain Spain Portugal Italy Germany Outline the two countriesthat make up the landmass known as the Iberian

Peninsula

What did they do?

 Built Colonies:

- a land controlled by a distant nation

- The Europeans set up 3 different types of colonies

settler colonies, trade colonies, plantation colonies

Colonialism- the extension of a nation’s control over Colonialism- the extension of a nation’s control over land and people outside its own boundaries

When Did this happen

The Age of Exploration began in the 1400s

It was dominated by Portugal until the English and Dutch began to challenge them around 1600

Historians consider the end of this age to be around 1800 Historians consider the end of this age to be around 1800

Where did these explorers go?

 Colonies were established in:

– Africa

– Oceania– Oceania

 South Pacific

– Asia

– the Americas.

Why Do This?

3 Reasons why:

1. Wealth: from trade and gold

2.Trade: nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and pepper, silk, gunpowder

3. Desire to spread Christianity

One explorer explained that he wanted “to serve God and His Majesty to give light to those who were in darkness and to grow rich as all men desire to do.”

Gunpowder

When Europeans learned about gunpowder, it changed the course of history.

Europeans used gunpowder to:– Take captives

Aid in conquest– Aid in conquest

– Protect themselves on the ship

– Fight natives

– Hunt for food on land

How did the explorers do this?

The only way this was possible was by new technologies.

 The old way:

– Ships were not sturdy or very big

– Ships couldn’t sail against the wind

– No idea to tell what direction they were going

New Technology

There were four inventions that helped to make exploration quicker and easier

1. Caravel

Astrolabe2. Astrolabe

3. Magnetic compass

4. Nautical sexton

Caravel

Benefits:

1. Bigger– Could carry most supplies, tools,

and things needed to start a new colony.

2. More sturdy2. More sturdy– To withstand stormy seas.

3. Could sail against the wind– The triangle shape to the sail made

this possible.

Astrolabe

Astrolabe was perfected by the Muslims

Used rings to site the stars to tell how from the equator.
