Amazing Animation! with Sopholces PlokamakisGrades: 3–5Day(s): Thursday$385Have you ever wanted to draw as well as Disney animators? Learn the secret studio techniques of the Disney imagineers! Students will also learn animation tricks from the Japanese Anime Masters and Tezuka Productions! Learn how to draw dynamic figures and characters that feel like they pop off the page! Design fun fantasy worlds for your characters to roam in!The course will begin with the short handmade animated films of Windsor McCay, the father of animation. Students will draw inspiration from watching classic cartoons from 1930 – 2000 including: The first Disney short cartoons and movies; Hanna-Barbara classics such as Space Ghost, The Herculoids, the Flintstones, Rocky and Bullwinkle; and classic superhero cartoons from the 40’s - 90’s, like Batman the Animated Series and Max Fleisher’s Superman.

The goal for this class is for each student to develop their own unique characters with back stories and a unique world for the characters to live in by the end of the semester.

This class will utilize experi-mental ways of painting and mark making, focusing on the act of painting rather than the final image. In addition to using paints and brushes, we will also explore more experimental ways of painting including using brooms and sticks, rocks and balls, dancing on our drawings, print making, and collage to make expressionist and abstract pictures.

This class is designed to leverage the students’ skills from the beginner class and take Jr.FLL teams to the next level. The class uses the LEGO® Education WeDo™ system designed specifically to bring the fun and challenge of robot-ics to students ages 7 to 11. Team members will build LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors, program their models with colorful, visual software designed for kids, and explore a series of cross-curricular, theme based activities while developing their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as language and literacy. This course will take a historical approach to the electric bass, surveying specific styles, techniques and grooves from rock to funk, from jazz to reggae. Prominent bassists in each style will be presented and studied. Students will also learn rudiments of bass clef reading and some essential concepts of music theory. Facilitated by adult mentors, the students research, think critically, and imagine ways to solve challenges pertaining to “Super seniors: improve the quality of life for seniors.” The students will be mentored to produce both (1) a tri-fold poster of the team journey and (2) a LEGO model with at least one movable piece comprised of 400 to 1,000 LEGO parts during the season. This course fosters teamwork and critical thinking. This will be a fun journey where imagination and creativity are mapped to building a movable machine.

BioBase Sisters in Science NEW!Grade: 3rd-5th Day(s): Tuesday OR Thursday (Can only enroll in one day)$375BioBase provides a space exclusively for girls and young women to find their scientific interest. Over the course of the semester, students will learn to formulate and test their own hypotheses. Students will engage in lessons from a variety of scientific fields such as biological sciences, environmental sciences, and materi-al science. The BioBase is a state-of-the-art, interdisciplinary community science lab, housed in the brand-new Lower Eastside Girls Club Center for Community, just eight blocks from Nest+m. At the BioBase, students use research-grade microscopes during school-day, after-school, weekend, and summer science explo-rations. BioBase Ph.D. level scientists lead standards-aligned courses in biological science, environmental science, and mate-rials science that nurture students’ natural curiosity and critical thinking skills. Students will be walked over to BioBase after dismissal by After3 staff and then escorted back to the facility by After3 staff at the end of the day.

Arrangements of radio favorites, modern day works, jazz standards, classic and traditional pieces will be learned and presented in performance. Singers will learn the techniques of blending, holding and creating harmonies, singing a Capella, percussive vocalizing, performing properly with microphones, and entertaining audiences like a Birdhouse Player.Must demonstrate vocal range and ability to hold simple har-mony to participate. Fashion: Repurpose a Garment NEW!with Aitana MartinezGrades: 3–5Day(s): Friday$375Take a garment you already own and turn it into something new! Students will start out by sketching ideas of what they want to transform their garment into. Once the design is re-viewed by the teacher and the student, they will work together to make their sketch a reality. Using creative thought and imagination, students will figure out how to deconstruct their old garment and sew it up again to create their new one. The process teaches students correct construction methods as well as encouraging creative solutions to complete their garment transformations. This couture philosophy is the foundation for this lesson in expressive looks and artistic vision, and it gives them the tools they need to repeat the process on their own!

Fencingwith Sheridan Fencing AcademyGrades: 2–5Day(s): Wednesday$400Students enjoy a step-wise, intensive introduction to the tech-nique, rules, strategy, and improvisational beauty of the sport of fencing. They enjoy the learning process and take pride and pleasure in their efforts by focusing on the rewards, not the labor involved. Through activities and exercises they develop fundamental skills in a way that brings fun and exuberance to the learning process. From the first traditional salute at the beginning of class to bouting practice at its end, the focus is on good sportsmanship, self-regulation, athleticism, and the magic of the swash and buckle. Students are broken up into two groups of classes that run for 45 minutes each. Children not in class will be in Homework Club.

Introduction to 3D Printing NEW!( Max 15 students)Grade: 4-5Day(s): WednesdayPrice: $400What can 3D printing really do? This workshop is designed to develop students' interest in 3D printing technology and their understanding of how 3D printing is currently being used in the fields of medicine, engineering, science, and art. Students will be guided through the basic operations of online model-ing software (Tinker CAD) and an Ultimaker 2 3D printer. In addition, students will develop problem-solving skills unique to the 3D design process: brainstorming, research, design, imple-mentation, and evaluation. The workshop will first investigate current uses for 3D printing, and then learn the fundamentals of modeling software and the printing process through instruc-tion and hands-on activities. Teams of three students will iden-tify a problem in their communities, collaborating on designing and printing their own unique model that will provide an innovative solution. The workshop will culminate in an in-class presentation of each project, including a discussion of how their model can be used and reflecting on how their models can be improved. Students' final models and informational posters will be displayed in the school library to aid in other students' discovery of what 3D printing can truly accomplish.

Students learn about the evolution from still to moving images through hands-on exercises. We develop our own short stories, write scripts, and create storyboards. After all those prepara-tory exercises, students collaborate with each other on filming - being directors, camera operators, and actors. The process of editing in iMovie is covered in detail.

Non-Digital Game Designwith Reynaldo VargasGrades: 1–3Day(s): Monday$375Non-Digital Game Design is a hands-on workshop class for younger students to introduce them to the challenges and intricacies of game design. Games, both digital and non-digital, are fundamentally similar in terms of rules, goals, and complex systems. Teaching using non-digital game design removes the hurdle of the computer-user problem that students will have when starting out. This class will have students play and iterate existing games as design practice. Every week students will create their own non-digital games in teams.

Swimming with Physique Swim SchoolGrades: 1–5Day(s): Tuesday OR Friday$450 Per DayLearning to swim takes time, practice, and patience, but the rewards are tremendous. The faculty of Physique Swim School, believe that swimming is an essential part of a full life. Using unique and dynamic teaching methods, the experienced staff will take Nest+m kids the whole way from beginners to mas-ter-swimmers. Upon completion of a swim level, each student receives a certificate of achievement; they then have it as a con-stant reminder of what they have achieved, and what they are capable of achieving in the future. More advanced students will train as if on a swim team where they will learn how to swim better, faster, and more efficiently. There are two essential parts to successful swimming – technique and training. Technique will be addressed first as a foundation. Once your child has secured good technique, appropriative workouts become more effective. These workouts will combine stroke/ kicking drills, and interval sets, which together will make training more effec-tive and fun. Children are divided up into five groups based on skill level. Instructor to Child ratio is 1:4 at the beginner levels and increases slightly with level. Please note registration for this course will start on August 25th.

Video Game Design NEW!with Tam Myaing & Reynaldo VargasGrades: 4–5Day(s): Thursday$375Learn how to create games and video games with Tynker and other game-making tools. Tynker is an online program that allows kids to learn how to make games using visual building blocks. Based on Scratch, it uses fun, game-based quests and courses to help kids learn game design and make their own video games that they can share with their friends. As kids get proficient, they can transition to Javascript – a professional coding language for the Web – right inside Tynker. Making games leads to the development of critical 21st Century skills. Designing a successful game involves: Systems Thinking; Cre-ative Problem Solving; Art & Aesthetics; Writing & Storytelling; Interactive Design; Programming & Technical Design; Com-munication & Collaboration.
