sets out on a race through electric Kinshasa, a world of music and dreams. Franco-Senegalese director Alain Gomis paints an unforgettable portrait of a woman who will not accept compromise, who tackles everything head on, and who refuses to give in no matter what. In Lingala and French with subtitles. 2017. 2h3m.

Movie: FRANK SERPICOIn the 1970s, one man stood up to the entire New York City police force. Hailed as a hero, hated by others, officer Frank Serpico made headlines when he blew the whistle on a culture of corruption in the department. His one-man crusade for police reform inspired the Al Pacino classic that bears his name, but the real saga is as gripping as anything Hollywood could dream up. Now, Serpico tells his story in his own words. Featuring music by Jack White and in-terviews with Serpico’s associates and admirers, this is an inspiring, all-access portrait of a courageous man who refused to betray his ideals. 2017. 1h39m.

Movie: HARRY & SNOWMAN [encore screening]Harry & Snowman follows the Cinderella story of Dutch immigrant Harry deLeyer and his transformative relationship with a broken down Amish plow horse named Snowman that he rescued from a slaughter truck. In less than two years, Harry and Snowman went on to win the triple crown of show jump-ing, beating the nation’s blue bloods, and traveling the world together as they became the media darlings of the 1950s and 60s. Their chance meeting at a Pennsylvania horse auction saved them both and crafted a friendship that lasted a lifetime, as told by 86-year-old Harry, firsthand. 2015. 1h24m.

Movie: JANE [encore screening]Drawing from over 100 hours of never-before-seen footage that was tucked away in the National Geographic archives for over 50 years, award-winning director Brett Morgen tells the story of Jane Goodall, a woman whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and revolutionized our understanding of the natural world. Set to a rich orchestral score from legendary composer Philip Glass, the film offers an unprecedented, intimate portrait of Goodall, a trailblazer who defied the odds to become one of the world’s most admired conservationists. 2017. 1h30m.

Movie: LADY BIRDGreta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, excavating both the humor and pathos in the turbulent bond between a mother and her teenage daughter. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against, but is exactly like, her wildly loving, deeply opinionated, and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father loses his job. Set in Sacra-mento, CA in 2002, amid a rapidly shifting American economic landscape, Lady Bird is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home. 2017. 1h33m.

Movie: ON THE BEACH AT NIGHT ALONEArt imitates life in this quietly devastating masterpiece from Hong Sangsoo. Kim Minhee (The Handmaiden), in the role that won her the Silver Bear for best actress in Berlin, plays Younghee, an actress reeling in the aftermath of an affair with a married director. She visits Hamburg then returns to Korea, but as she meets with friends and has her fair share to drink, confessions emerge. In English, Korean, and German with subtitles. 2017. 1h41m.

Movie: SHADOWMANIn the 1980s, Richard Hambleton was the Shadowman, a specter in the night who painted hundreds of startling silhouettes on the walls of lower Manhattan and, along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, sparked the street art

TENORES DE ATERÚE: THE SINGERS FROM ELSEWHERETuesday, January 23 at 7:00pm: Documentary, Performance, and Q&AThe quartet, Tenores de Aterúe, performs traditional songs from Sardinia. The guttural sounds, overtones, and rhythmic precision of the singing form called cantu a tenore led UNESCO to declare it a “masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity.” This is the only ensemble outside of Sardinia dedicated to cantu a tenore. The performance will begin with Aterúe: the singers from elsewhere, a documentary about the group, followed by a Q&A with cinematographer Lucas Miller and singers Avery Book, Gideon Crevoshay, Carl Linich, and Doug Paisley. Tickets: $7 Members & Students / $9 General.

Movie: BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORYWhat does the most ravishing actress of the 1930s and 40s have in common with an inventor whose concepts were the basis of cell phone and bluetooth technology? They are both Hedy Lamarr, the glamour icon and technological trailblazer who perfected a radio system to throw Nazi torpedoes off course. From Hedy’s beginnings as a Jewish emigre, to her scandalous nude scene in the 1933 film Ecstasy, to her ground-breaking and uncredited inventions, to her latter years as a recluse, Bombshell tells the story of a woman spurned as too beautiful to be smart who is a role model to this day. 2017. 1h29m.

Movie: CHILDREN OF PARADIES [1945]Widely considered one of the greatest French films of all time, this nimble depiction of 19th-century Paris’s theatrical demimonde, filmed during World War II, follows a mysterious woman loved by four different men: an actor, a criminal, a count, and, most poignantly, a mime (Jean-Louis Barrault, in a longing-suffused performance for the ages). Director Marcel Carné resurrects a world teeming with hucksters and aristocrats, thieves and courtesans, pimps and seers. Thanks to a new restoration, this iconic classic looks and sounds richer and more detailed than ever. In French with subtitles. 1945. 3h10m.

Movie: FÉLICITÉFélicité follows a singer working in a bar in Kinshasa, DR Congo, whose life is thrown into turmoil when her son falls victim to an accident. To save him, she

movement. After drug addiction and homelessness sent him spinning out of the art scene for 20 years, the Shadowman gets a second chance, but will he take it? 2017. 1h22m.

Movie: SONG OF GRANITEEnigmatic and complex, Joe Heaney was one of the greats of traditional Irish singing (sean nós). Shaped by the myths and songs of his upbringing in the west of Ireland, his emergence as a gifted artist came at a personal cost. Fea-turing performances from Colm Seoighe, Macdara Ó Fátharta, Jaren Cerf, Lisa O’Neill, Damien Dempsey, sean nós singers Mícheál Ó Chonfhaola and Pól Ó Ceannabháin, and beautiful black and white cinematography, Song of Granite is a remarkable portrait of Heaney and a marvelous exploration of music and song. In English and Gaelic with subtitles. 2017. 1h44m.

Movie: THELMAThelma, a shy student, has left her religious family in a small town on the coast of Norway to study at a university in Oslo. While at the library, she experiences a violent seizure. Soon after, she finds herself intensely drawn toward Anja, a beautiful student who reciprocates Thelma’s powerful attraction. Thelma becomes increasingly overwhelmed by her intense feelings for Anja. As it becomes clearer that her seizures are a symptom of supernatural abilities, Thelma is confronted with tragic secrets of her past and the terrifying implica-tions of her powers. In Norwegian with subtitles. 2017. 1h56m.

Movie: THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEERDr. Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a surgeon presiding over a spotless household with his ophthalmologist wife Anna (Nicole Kidman) and their two exemplary children. Lurking at the margins of his idyllic suburban existence is Martin, a fatherless teen who Steven has, covertly, taken under his wing. As Martin begins insinuating himself into the family’s life, the full scope of his intent becomes clear when he confronts Steven with a long forgotten trans-gression that will shatter the family’s domestic bliss. The film cements director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) in the pantheon of world-class auteurs and marks him as a provocateur without precedent. 2017. 1h56m.

Movie: THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPEThis wry, melancholic comedy from Aki Kaurismäki, a response to the current refugee crisis, follows two people searching for a place to call home. Displaced Syrian Khaled lands in Helsinki. Meanwhile, middle-aged salesman Wikström buys an unprofitable seafood restaurant. After Khaled is denied asylum, he decides not to return to Aleppo, and the paths of the two men cross. The Other Side of Hope is a bittersweet tale of human kindness in the face of indiffer-ence. In English, Finnish, and Arabic with subtitles. 2017. 1h38m.

Movie: TROUBLE NO MORE [Bob Dylan]A showcase of Bob Dylan’s creative and spiritual mindset during his gospel era, from Slow Train Coming to Saved to Shot of Love.
