Amermans Ring Bell on Rare Trip to Ring... Watching the proceedings surrounding the $4.2-mil-lion A.P. Indy colt out back were John and JerryAmerman, who raced Balance and bred yesterday=stopper. The dapper couple were calm and collected asbidding concluded, and accepted congratulations fromseveral people standing nearby. They quickly headedinside to offer their congratulations to Besilu=s BenLeon. Afterward, John Amerman, former chairman and CEOof Mattel Inc., talked to reporters in the hallway of thepavilion, and explained that he would have been happyto keep and race the colt. But the lure of the commer-cial market proved too great. AEither way we would have won,@ said Amerman ofhis colt, who became the highest-priced Thoroughbredto sell at public auction in North American sinceMeydan City (Kingmambo) sold here for $11.7 million in2006. AHe=s such a wonderful horse, and I=m so gladhe=s going to a great owner and to a great trainer. He=sa very special horse, and that=s why we were so hesi-tant to sell him. We almost never sell. But a lot of peo-ple who advise us said, >Well, it=s the first one and it=s acolt. You should sell him.=@ One member of the team Amerman singled out wasbloodstock agent Bob Feld, who purchased Balance forthe Amermans for $260,000 at the 2004 Septembersale. Balance went on to become one of the betterracemares of her generation, winning the GI LasVirgenes S., GI Santa Anita Oaks and GI SantaMargarita Invitational H. while earning over $1.04 mil-lion. This was her first foal. ABob=s been so helpful over the years, and helps us inso many ways, including giving us a good recommenda-tion on what we should do with this colt,@ saidAmerman. Balance would have boasted stellar credentials head-ing to the breeding shed on race record alone, but shealso just happens to be a half-sister to one of the all-time greats in Zenyatta (Street Cry {Ire}). Havingbought Balance a year earlier, Amerman admitted tolooking at and passing on Zenyatta as a yearling. Shesold for just $60,000 to Jerry and Ann Moss at Sep-tember in 2005. ATo be truthful, we didn=t know at the time whatBalance would be,@ said Amerman. AShe hadn=t run yet,and we said, >Well, let=s just pass.= It was our mistake, but hey, those things happen. I=m glad the Mosses gother for a reasonable price.

A # will distinguish first-time stakes-winners, a @ willindicate first-time graded stakes-winners, a s willdenote a first-time Grade/Group 1 winner, a + willindicate first-time starters, an (S) will be used for state-bred races, a (C) will be used for maiden-claiming racesand an (R) will be used for other restricted races.

AShe=s been so good for the sport. Zenyatta=s justvery special, and the Mosses are just marvelous people. They=re from California and are very good friends. I=mso delighted they=ve won 18 in a row and going on 19.And maybe they=ll be back at the [GI Breeders= Cup]Classic, and wouldn=t it be nice to have a round 20?@ In addition to Feld, Amerman thanked his wife Jerryand consignor Headley Bell and his family=s Mill RidgeSales, home to the Amermans= bloodstock. AMy wife suggested the breeding,@ said Amerman.AAnd Mill Ridge helped with the breeding and helpedbring this colt along. Every time you'd go there, you'dbe more excited about him. Mill Ridge is just the bestthere is, and they turn out their horses so well, and Ithink that helped with this colt.@ Balance has a Street Cry (Ire) colt on the ground andwas bred back to the Darley stallion. AWe love [Street Cry], and the fact that they arethree-quarter [siblings] to Zenyatta doesn=t hurt,@Amerman remarked. While new to the sale scene, the Amermans haveenjoyed great success racing. They have campaignedthe winners of no fewer than 22 Grade I races. Horsesto carry the Amermans= dark blue colors include Adora-tion, Lido Palace (Ire), Spoken Fur, Printemps (Chi),Siphonic, Happyanunoit (NZ) and Mash One (Chi). -LMSession-topper cont. p4

Leon Full Tilt at Keeneland... Benjamin Leon, who was making his first appearanceat Keeneland September yesterday, certainly marked hisdebut with plenty of fireworks. No stranger to thespotlight, Leon recently made headlines when purchas-ing another A.P. Indy colt for $1.2 million at lastmonth=s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling sale. Notto be denied last night, the debonair Cuban nativejumped into the fray to take on Team Coolmore andKaleem Shah--who was flanked by Bob Baffert andDonato Lanni--soon after the $3-million mark, lendingsome spice to the drawn-out battle. And while many inattendance waited in suspense to see who would beleft standing, Leon indicated later that there was neverany doubt as to the outcome.

AI was going to get thecolt,@ the master of BesiluStables declared. AI wasnot leaving without him.@ Explaining the decisionto wait and jump into thebattle late, Leon rea-soned, AWhy jump in atthe beginning? I like tostay low key. I was goingto buy the colt anyway,so it didn=t matter when Igot in.@ As for the purchaseprice, Leon was not sur-

prised by the hefty premium placed on the son of Bal-ance (Thunder Gulch). AIt all boils down to that somebody was willing to bid$4 million to get this horse, and the way I see it, if youare willing to bid that kind of money, an extra$100,000 or $200,000 won=t be a deal breaker,@ hesaid. AWe were hoping he would have been lower thanwhat he brought, but the $4-million mark was prettymuch what [J.J. and Todd] Pletcher thought he wouldbring. So I was mentally prepared.@ Leon was even more encouraged to bid when he sawthe caliber of competition that was in the running forthe highly prized yearling. AIn my mind, he brought only $100,000 more thanwhat the other experts in the industry were willing togive for him,@ explained Leon. ASo I made that bid with100-percent comfort. In my mind, I should not bewrong about the decision to buy him.@

While the colt=s page offered much to be desired, hisphysical conformation served up the sizzle as well. AHe is just a beautiful horse,@ he said. AHe is a bigboned and attractive horse with a nice walk. In fact,J.J. Pletcher said they couldn=t find anything to fault. When you put that together with the caliber of his damand his second dam [Vertigineux], it=s very difficult tonot want to have him. All he has to do is perform onthe racetrack, and if he does that, he can very easilybecome a very good sire in the future, so I see it as avery good investment.@ Also on a high following the sale was Headley Bell.Bell=s Mill Ridge Sales offered the colt on behalf of JerryAmerman, who campaigned the dam and bred theresulting foal. AWe didn=t have any expectations, we really didn=t,@said Bell in regard to the final price. AAll we knew wasthat he came here in fantastic condition, and everybodyreally liked him. He jumped through every hoop andchecked all the boxes.@ Bell was not the least bit surprised, however, thatmost of the big players on the grounds, were in pursuitof the bay. AHe was a very popular horse,@ confirmed Bell. AHewas a big horse, but he moves like a cat.@ Further explaing the colt=s appeal, Bell added, AHewas just so composed and he is all class. He was al-ways a nice individual, but he really peaked on the day.He was simply exceptional.@ In regard to one of the underbidders, Bell said, ALookat Bob Baffert [bidding for Kaleem Shah], he reallybelieved in this horse. It was hard for him to not gethim, and I really sympathize with them.@ Leon=s only other purchase of the evening wasHip 25, a filly by Pulpit out of graded-stakes winner andGrade I stakes placed Chimichurri (Elusive Quality). TheJan. 5 foal was offered by Warrendale Sales on behalfof her breeder, Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. AThe filly is just gorgeous,@ enthused Leon. AShe isjust so feminine with a beautiful neck and a lovely pedi-gree.@ Leon confirmed that both of last night=s purchasesare headed to J. J. Pletcher=s training center in Ocala.-CB

Man on a Mission... Leon, who arrived in the United States at the age of16, is a self-made man who has built an empire onebrick at a time. Currently a resident of Miami, Florida,Leon started Leon Medical Centers just over 14 yearsago, and has developed the company into one of theleading providers of health care services in Florida. Along-time horse enthusiast, Leon entered the equineworld almost three decades ago, first through the PasoFino breed, and only recently made the transition to theworld of Thoroughbreds. AI know what I don=t know,@ said Leon. AI needed tofeel a level of comfort before I could get involved inThoroughbreds. The thing that made me make thedecision to the jump [from Paso Finos to Thorough-breds] was the Pletcher family. I met J.J. Pletcherthrough my real estate company. Through them, I de-veloped the comfort that I needed, in that I knew I wasin good hands, because they are people with integrity, know how and are very knowledgeable in the industry. On the other hand, my plan is to have a limited numberof horses and focus on quality.@ After purchasing his first Thoroughbred privately lastyear, Leon added a few select horses to his bloodstockholdings. He currently has a pair of horses on the track, and an additional four broodmares boarded at his farmin Ocala, Florida. Featured among his broodmare bandis stakes winner With Flying Colors (A.P. Indy), adaughter of champion My Flag (Easy Goer); and BorderDispute (Boundary), the dam of Group 3 Long Lashes(Rock Hard Ten). According to Leon, he hopes to buildhis Thoroughbred holdings to about 12 mares and 10yearlings per season. AWe plan to breed a few, race a few, and hopefullyget lucky and have some fun,@ he said. And while many are tightening their purse strings andcutting back investments, Leon is moving ahead withgreater resolve and determination.

AI think this is a good opportunity to invest in any-thing that could be considered a luxury item or highrisk,@ he opined. AHorses are high risk, so the degree ofsuccess, monetarily speaking, is going to be equal tothe degree of risk you are going to take, in businessand in life. I=m kind of a calculated risk taker. I love theindustry, as I love the health care industry, and I see itas a good investment.@ Armed with a fiery passion for the sport and keenbusiness acumen, Leon explained that he has usedmany of the principals he has collected in his othercareer endeavors in developing his growing Thorough-bred operation. However, he is quick to point out someof the more intangible factors involved in his success. ALuck is the point where preparation meets opportu-nity,@ offered Leon. AI=ve worked very hard to get towhere I am, but I have been very lucky.@-C Bossinakis

Outbid Early, Shah Lands Two... Prominent new owner Kaleem Shah currently has theunique distinction of being an underbidder on the twohighest-priced Thoroughbreds to sell in 2010. At theFasig-Tipton Calder Sale earlier in the spring, he fell justshort of Jess Jackson=s Stonestreet Stables for the coltBrock (Distorted Humor), who brought a season-topping

$2.3 million in the juvenilemarket. Last night, Shahmade a game push for the$4.2 million A.P. Indy--Bal-ance topper, but bowed outaround the $3.5-millionmark. Shah didn=t walk awayempty-handed, though. Hecame back to purchase hip47, a colt by Storm Cat outof GISW Halo America(Waquoit), for $320,000.

Consigned by Hill >n= Dale Sales Agency, the colt is afull-brother to SW & MGISP Marino Marini. Then withsession one drawing to a close, Shah secured hip 96, acolt by Giant=s Causeway, for $950,000. That was thesecond-highest price on the evening. Bred by RichardSantulli=s Colts Neck Stables and consigned by Lane=sEnd, the bay is a son of the 14-year-old stakes winnerSpunoutacontrol (Wild Again), a half-sister to championMinardi (Boundary) and Tale of the Cat (Storm Cat), andto Myth (Ogygian), dam of champion, GSW and suc-cessful sire Johannesburg (Hennessy). Shah admitted he was disappointed not to get theA.P. Indy topper, but was happy with the pair he pur-chased. AThe other was a nice horse, but this was a nicehorse, too,@ Shah said after landing the Giant=s Cause-way colt. AI bought him right out of the back,@ Baffert quippedto reporters, inferring it was a last-minute decisionbased on the colt=s appearance in the rear walking ring.AI saw him earlier today, and I liked the way he carriedhimself. The way his pedigree is, he was light on hisfeet. I thought he was very balanced. We=ll know nextyear if we did the right thing.@

Baffert said he was somewhat surprised that he did-n=t win the battle for the A.P. Indy colt. AI really thought we were going to get him,@ he said.AI thought we=d get him for $3 million. He was a prettyspecial.@ Shah campaigns J “TDN Rising Star” J TakeControl (A.P. Indy--Azeri) and this year=s GIII WestVirginia Derby and GIII Iowa Derby winner ConcordPoint (Tapit). Both are trained by Baffert. Baffert saidthat Take Control, sidelined after a debut win at SantaAnita last December, is back in training, but that Con-cord Point would be given the remainder of the yearoff. -LM

Opening Session Ends With a Bang for Lane’s End... Lane=s End packed a whole lot of bang into a shortspace of time during yesterday=s opening session of theSeptember sale. The consignment was responsible forfour of the top five lots, all of which sold with under 30hips to go in the select session. Hip 96, a son of Giant=sCauseway out of Spunoutacontrol (Wild Again), led theway with the night=s second highest bid of $950,000.Purchased by Kaleem Shah, the yearling is from thefamily of Tale of the Cat and Johannesburg. Lane=sEnd=s Will Farish admitted he was pleasantly surprisedwith the colt=s purchase price. AThere are a lot of Gi-ant=s Causeways, so we didn=t know exactly how wellhe would do,@ Farish admitted. Hip 86, a colt by champion Bernardini out of theFarish-bred and raced mare Private Status (Alydar),attracted a final bid of $800,000 from Shadwell Estate.Group I-placed on the racetrack, Private Status pro-

duced a pair of graded-stakes winners by Lane=sEnd stallion A.P. Indy in GI Kentucky Oaks winnerSecret Status and AlumniHall, so breeding the nine-year-old mare to A.P.Indy=s son Bernardini wasan easy choice, accordingto Farish. ABernardini is oneof A.P.=s best sons,@ Farishcommented. AI have lovedthat horse since the timehe went to stud. He was

an absolutely beautiful horse. And he has some goodtwo-year-olds--of course at the time we didn=t know it.We=ve bred a number of mares to Bernardini with theidea and the hope that he would be the kind of sire thatit looks like he will be.@ Late in Sunday=s session, Lane=s End also sold hip 79,a son of Distorted Humor out of stakes-placedOneofacat (Deputy Minister) for $700,000. The yearlingis from the family of Hold That Tiger and Editor=s Noteand was purchased by Shadwell. Rounding out Lane=s End=s powerful four was Hip 94,a filly by Unbridled=s Song out of MGISP Soul Search(A.P. Indy). The gray yearling sold for $685,000 to FlagLake. Of Lane=s End=s session-ending blitzkrieg, Farish ad-mitted, AWe were very pleased. We weren=t quite ex-pecting them to go that well, particularly the filly. Theywere outstanding individuals and they lived up to it.@ Farish noted that buyers were very discriminatingduring Sunday=s session. AI think the market is very particular,@ he observed. AIthink it was soft in spots. But the really good individu-als with the pedigree sold well.@

Santulli and Lane’s End Perfect Together... Two of Lane=s End=s top four yearlings were bred bythe New Jersey-based Colts Neck Stables of RichSantulli. The Giant=s Causeway colt purchased byKaleem Shah for $950,000 was a pleasant surprise forSantulli. AWe got more than we thought we would forthe Giant=s Causeway,@ Santulli admitted last night. Lukas Gets Two for Baker and Mack... Robert Baker and William Mack purchased 2009 GI Three Chimneys Hopeful S. winner Dublin (AfleetAlex) for $525,000 out of the 2008 Keeneland Septem-ber sale and the two men went back to the Septembersale to restock last night. Trainer D. Wayne Lukassigned the ticket on behalf of Baker and Mack for a pairof youngsters, going to $625,000 for a son of Dis-torted Humor and spending $300,000 for a son ofEmpire Maker. The first, hip 46, is a half-brother tochampion juvenile filly Halfbridled (Unbridled), while hip27 is out of graded stakes winner Collect Call(Meadowlake) and is a half-brother to Old Fashioned(Unbridled=s Song). AI got two really well-balancedhorses that had decent pedigrees,@ Lukas said of hispurchases. AThe thing that we want to do is to buyhorses that, at the end of the day, when they are doneracing, somebody will want to send them to the breed-ing shed.@ Of the price tag, Lukas added, AI was a littlepleased with the [Empire Maker colt] and a little over onthe other one, but the average was good. The first onewas $300,000--I thought he would bring a little bitmore and the other one I thought would bring a little bitless. It averaged out all right.@ Overall, Lukas foundmuch to be optimistic about during the sale=s openingsession. AI think the market is ok. I think it=s fair, it=s agood market. I think people on both sides, bidders andconsignors, have to be pleased. There is a good activegroup out here buying.@

Soul Music... A yearling by Unbridled=s Song out of the eight-year-old Soul Search (A.P. Indy) was the night=s top-pricedfilly, eliciting a bid of $685,000 from Flag Lake #2.Lane's End's Bill Farish signed the ticket. AIt=s for a new

client who doesn=t wantto be identified,@ saidFarish, who did his bid-ding sitting along theback wall of the salespavilion. Farish wasplenty familiar with thefilly, who was bred byhis father Will Farish inpartnership with KilroyThoroughbred Partner-ship. Lane=s End con-signed the Jan. 26-foaled miss as hip 94.AWe knew her very well,

and she was one of my favorite fillies,@ said Farish.AWe=re very excited about her chances as a racehorse.@Asked to describe her physically, Farish commented,AShe=s a big, strong, athletic filly. [Bloodstock agent]Mike Ryan was just saying to me that she reminds himof Winning Colors. And we sure wouldn=t mind if shecould run like her.@

Farish said his client would like to purchase one moreyearling, a colt, during the September Sale. From thefamily of champion juvenile Pleasant Stage (PleasantColony), hip 94's dam Soul Search ran second in the GIJuddmonte Spinster S. here at Keeneland and was alsothird in the GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga.

September Becomes an Event... The action wasn=t limited to the sales ring last nightas the September sale made its first foray into twilightselling. The sales pavilion was hopping as horse auctionmelded with social event in a scene reminiscent ofKeeneland=s old July sale. The majority of the seatsinside the pavilion were filled for most of the evening, while intrigued spectators lined the windows surround-ing the pavilion three deep, anxious to get a peek at the$4.2-million sales topper.

Keeneland September coverage cont.

Keeneland=s redesigned pavilion gave industry insidersand tourists alike a chance to enjoy the unusual eveningsession, with plenty of places to congregate and enjoythe beautiful fall night. The outside back walking ringattracted a throng of onlookers, while the outside barwas filled with a younger crowd. The inside walkingring was the place to find your trainer of choice, withSteve Asmussen, Christophe Clement, Richard Mandellaand Dallas Stewart among the many conditioners ex-changing pleasantries. Mandella stopped to chat withWinStar=s Bill Casner, who was taking the opportunityto get his cowboy boots shined. The inside bar was wall to wall, while inside thetucked-away Northern Dancer bar John Ferguson wasamong the patrons enjoying a moment away from themadding crowd. The evening session seemed to be a hit with most. AI like it,@ Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas said, before chuckling and admitting, AIt=s a little harder on ahorse trainer, but it=s all right.@ Lane=s End=s Will Farish was another proponent of thenew format. AI think it=s going to be tweaked and im-proved as we go along,@ Farish said. ABut I think it=s agood change. Fundamentally, with the [start] time andeverything, it worked out well. It did remind me a littlebit of the July sale. And that was the whole idea.@ Keeneland officials were also pleased with the resultof the new evening session. AThe atmosphere here was exactly what we tried toaccomplish by this new format,@ said Keeneland=s direc-tor of sales Geoffrey Russell. AThere was an excitementand there was an electricity.@ More excitement and electricity is scheduled fortonight at Keeneland, with the sale=s second sessionbeginning at 7 p.m.

Good Portents During Opener... Keeneland September=s new format makes year-to-year comparisons difficult, but most seemed to agreethat last night=s opening session was a success. In all,69 of the 93 horses offered brought $23,965,000. Theaverage--boosted by the $4.2 million topper--was a verystrong $347,319, while the median was $250,000.Last year=s opener, with roughly twice as many horsesgoing under the hammer, saw 107 horses bring$24,949,000, an average of $233,168. The 2009median was $200,000. Another positive indicator wassharp decline in the RNA rate. In 2009, the first-sessionRNA was 41 percent, compared to 25.81 percent lastnight. "It's a different format and a different world,@ saidKeeneland Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. AIt's anew format, and a new Book 1 and a new Book 2, andin fairness to it all, there is no comparison." Russell found plenty to be happy about, though. "There is nothing more exciting than to have a saletopper at a level that we haven't matched since 2006.We thought he was one of the top horses on thegrounds and he delivered. There was a large group ofbuyers from all corners of the worlds, and they werebuying at all levels, which is positive. The median wasup, so that was very positive. The RNA rate was verygood [25 percent], especially given this market andespecially at this level of the market. The atmospherehere was exactly what we were trying to accomplish bythis new format. There was an excitement and an elec-tricity that the buyers got involved in. Having the groupof buyers that we did, I think our goal was successful." There were areas of concern, however. John Fergu-son, Sheikh Mohammed=s principal bloodstock agent, made but one purchase, landing hip 2--a colt by theDarley stallion Bernardini out of Victory Ride (Seekingthe Gold)--for $450,000. Ferguson signed for 14 year-lings last year on Day 1 for a total outlay of$4,830,000. Similarly, rival Coolmore made just a sin-gle purchase, acquiring hip 40, a colt by A.P. Indy outof GISW Friendly Michelle (Artax), for $600,000.Coolmore was, however, the direct underbidder on the$4.2 million topper.

Behkabad was three-for-three after garnering a firstpiece of black-type in this track's G3 Prix des Chenesover a mile in September, but lost his perfect tag on hisseasonal return when only third in the Listed Prix Om-nium over that trip in testing ground at Saint-Cloud

Apr. 1. Stepped up apanel for Chantilly'sG3 Prix de Guiche May10, the dark bay regis-tered a hard-foughtwin before staying onfor fourth in thatvenue's G1 Prix duJockey-Club (FrenchDerby) over 1 5/16-mile June 6. Up to thistrip for the first time inthe July 14 G1 GrandPrix de Paris, he got

first run on Planteur there and had 3/4 of a length tospare at the line. Settled behind that rival this time asthe pair tracked the Wildenstein pacemaker Vivre Libre(GB) (Sadler's Wells), he had to do the chasing in thestraight, as Anthony Crastus sent Planteur into thelead.

Taking time to find top stride, he eventually clickedfor Christophe-Patrice Lemaire's urgings and managedto grind his way past his nemesis in the shade of thepost. "He is a brave horse and has never run a badrace," winning trainer Jean-Claude Rouget commented."A mile and a half is his best trip, and when you goback to the Prix du Jockey-Club, you will see he is theonly horse finishing well. He didn't have a hard racetoday, as this wasn't the target, and we'll bring himback for the Arc." CASAMENTO ENTERS DEWHURST PICTURE Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum=s G1 National S. runner-up Casamento (Ire) (Shamardal)could run in the G1 Dewhurst S., trainer Mick Halfordannounced yesterday. Beaten a head by Pathfork (Dis-torted Humor) in The Curragh contest, the twice-racedcolt will bid to build on that effort in Newmarket=s Oct. 16 feature. AHe's fine, he ate up and there's not abother on him,@ Halford told PA Sport. AIt was a tremen-dous performance for a horse having only his secondracecourse appearance. He's very brave and a veryexciting prospect. He's got great qualities. He's a big,long-striding colt and got through the ground well, andwe think there is plenty more to come from him. We=llgive the Dewhurst some consideration. I'll speak to theteam and see what we are going to do, but it is cer-tainly worth thinking about at this point in time.@
