Welcome to the Jefferson Educational Society’s Global Summit X! This important lecture series could not come at a more opportune time, as we address some of the key issues facing the Erie community, our country, and the world.

As this event enters its 10th year, we can reflect proudly on last year’s summit, which marked the first time the Global Summit stretched into a third week! We heard nine great presentations from 13 of the most respected scholars, writers, and leaders in their respective fields.

Global Summit IX kicked off with a return visit by then-Brookings Centennial Scholar Bruce Katz discussing his latest book, “The New Localism,” as he offered candid advice for Erie’s political leaders. He was joined by former Pittsburgh Mayor and current Senior Fellow at the Urban Land Institute Tom Murphy for a dynamic and engaging conversation about the future of cities.

From there, we were “Linking Founding Fathers to Issues of the Day” with The Weekly Standard’s senior contributor Jay Cost. One of the summit goals is to learn from the past, understand the present and anticipate the future. That was evident in our discussion with three “Washington Insiders” – the Washington Post’s Philip Rucker, ABC News’ Tara Palmeri, and the Washington Examiner’s Byron York – as we explored the American presidency. And from Lake Erie naval history to spending time with Hunter S. Thompson, renowned historian and author Douglas Brinkley captivated a sold-out audience on a blustery Friday in Erie.

We examined German-American relations in the Age of Trump with Jackson Janes, the President of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies in Washington, D.C.; discussed a post-9/11 world with former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card; addressed food sourcing in the 21st century with Erie native Caitlin Welsh, the Acting Director of the Secretary of State’s Office of Global Food Security at the U.S. Department of State; and posed the question: “Is DIY Tech the Future of Science” with Ellen Jorgensen, Co-Founder and President of Biotech Without Borders, answering it with a discussion of biohacking’s impact on the scientific community.

We concluded the Summit with the tradition of honoring an Erie native with the Thomas B. Hagen Dignitas Award. Lt. Gen. James Dubik, Ret., received the award and delivered an impassioned speech about “America’s Leadership Challenge.”

All of that in just one Summit in just one year.

In the past nine years we have made a mark in the Erie community with 78 presenters over the course of 66 events, including the following national leaders: E.J. Dionne, Paul Kennedy, Alice Rivlin, Francis Fukuyama, Karl Rove, David Brooks, Harry Markopolos, Bill Kristol, Laura Bush, Michael Steele, Cokie Roberts, Danielle Allen, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Tom Ridge – just to name a few.

The Summit began as a simple idea: Invite some of the best thinkers to Erie to tell us about their body of work, cutting-edge studies, or insightful research on important issues. From there, we can point the focus on Erie’s challenges and opportunities. The Global Summit is now part of Northwestern Pennsylvania’s civic calendar, and we embrace the future with more thought-provoking lectures and panel discussions.

In the following pages, you’ll read about those joining us for the tenth annual Global Summit – a list I believe to be our best yet. You’ll see some familiar faces, as some of the best and brightest agreed to make a return visit, and some new faces as we showcase Erie’s splendor.

Returning to the Global Summit stage are famed historian and archeologist Ian Morris, former CIA Director Gen. Michael Hayden, former presidential candidate and Vermont governor Howard Dean, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, and The Atlantic’s James and Deborah Fallows, authors of “Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into the Heart of America,” who will receive this year’s Thomas B. Hagen Dignitas Award for their contributions to shaping Erie’s narrative. And, of course, I’m happy to say that this will make the eighth Global Summit appearance for me.

New to the Jefferson Stage, we’re excited to host the Washington Post’s David Ignatius, former Mayor of Fresno and current head of the Central Valley Community Foundation Ashley Swearengin, Erie native and Director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Clinical Immunology Leonard Calabrese, Fox News contributor and former senior adviser to President Trump Sebastian Gorka, Georgetown University professor and acclaimed author Michael Eric Dyson, presidential speechwriter and Republican strategist Elise Jordan, CBS News’ Bill Plante, ABC News’ Ann Compton, and MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.

An Evening with David IgnatiusAcclaimed journalist, novelist, and scholar David Ignatius kicks off Global Summit X with a discussion of national and international issues. Ignatius, an associate editor and nationally syndicated columnist for the Washington Post, frequently offers his analysis of national security issues on national news networks.

Before joining the staff of the Washington Post, Ignatius covered the steel industry in Pittsburgh for the Wall Street Journal and served as the publication’s Middle East correspondent from 1980 to 1982. In 1985, he received the Edward Weintal Prize for diplomatic reporting. Ignatius has also been awarded many other professional honors, including a lifetime achievement award from the International Committee for Foreign Journalism.

His writing has also appeared in the New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, Foreign Affairs, The New Republic, Talk Magazine, and The Washington Monthly.

In addition to his career as a journalist, Ignatius, 68, has also written 10 fiction novels that draw on his experience and interest in foreign affairs and intelligence operations. His latest novel, Quantum Spy, is a thriller about the race to build the world’s first hyper-fast quantum computer. Past best-selling novels include Body of Lies and The Increment, among others. “Fact and fiction converged for me in a story that change my life – and turned me into a novelist,” he noted. Body of Lies was adapted into a film by director Ridley Scott. In 2015, it was announced that Ignatius would work on a political opera called “The New Prince,” based on the teachings of Niccolo Machiavelli, with composer Mohammed Fairouz.

Ignatius grew up in Washington, D.C., and studied political theory at Harvard University and economics at Kings College, Cambridge. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Dr. Eve Thornberg Ignatius, and they have three daughters.

Fresno’s Story: Our Journey of Transformation and Community RenewalDuring her two terms as Mayor of Fresno, Calif., from 2009 to 2017, Ashley Swearengin steered her city away from an impending financial crisis, helped rebuild the downtown, and worked to get the city’s water system upgraded. Those were just a few of the transformational reforms Swearingen led, including successfully urging more people to use public transportation.

Her accomplishments were recognizable enough to catch the attention of national correspondents for The Atlantic, James and Deborah Fallows.

“There was no other city about which we changed our minds more fully than Fresno,” James Fallows praises in the critically acclaimed Our Towns: A 100,00-Mile Journey into the Heart of America. “The first time we heard the cheesy civic-booster motto – “Fresno? It’s Fres-yes!!” – all we noticed was the cheesiness. After a while we started saying it ourselves…”

The Fallows outline the tough but necessary decisions made by this “liberal Republican, who ran in a strongly Democratic state.” With “professionalism and laserlike focus,” Swearengin won her first election with just 55 percent of the vote but her second with 75 percent and had Fresno natives and visitors alike saying “yes” to her city and its progress.

And Swearengin, 46, was an experienced administrator when she entered office. She was the Director of the Office of Community and Economic Development at California State University in Fresno, co-founded the Regional Jobs Initiative (RJI), and served as the Chief Operations Officer. She was also the lead executive for the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley. Today, she is the deputy chairwoman of the Partnership’s board of directors.

She holds a B.S. and an MBA degree from California State University, Fresno.

While in office Swearengin was the consummate representative of working moms, as she worked with her husband, Paul, to raise their two children, Sydney and Samuel. After leaving office, she became President of the Central Valley Community Foundation, a charitable foundation that serves Central California and has provided more than $100 million to more than 650 community organizations.

War! What Is It Good For?

War! What Is It Good For?Ian Morris – archaeologist, historian, and academic – tells tales from the world’s 15,000 years of war as he examines how deadly fighting has affected the world for centuries. That’s the topic of his most recent and compelling book, War! What is it Good For? Conflict and the Progress of Civilization from Primates to Robots, which was met with popular and critical acclaim as a finalist in the 2014 California Book Awards nonfiction competition.

British born and educated, Morris, 68, has been a scholar and author based at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., since 1995 as the Jean and Rebecca Willard Professor of Classics and History. At Stanford, Morris has held a number of positions, including Associate Dean of Humanities and Sciences, Chairman of the Classics Department, and Director of the Social Science History Institute.

He will take the audience through the “good and bad” of warfare from the points of view of archaeology, history, and biology, noting how humans have gone from having a one-in-five chance of dying in violent conflict to a fewer than one-in-a-hundred chance in the 21st century. Only after knowing the extent of war – including the good – can we know where it’ll take us next, argues Morris.

Morris formerly taught at the University at Chicago after growing up in Stone, Staffordshire, England, and studying ancient history and archaeology at the University of Birmingham. He earned his Ph.D. at Cambridge University.

He is also no stranger to Erie. Morris lectured on the future of humanity at the Jefferson’s Global Summit V in 2013, and has written and lectured extensively throughout the United States on ancient Mediterranean history and world history.

The Human Immune System 2018: How Behavior Affects Wellness and LongevityDr. Leonard Calabrese, who lectures nationally and internationally on the subjects of HIV, immunology and rheumatology, will help the audience better understand the relationship between good behavior and wellness in his presentation on the human immune system. A timely topic, wellness-based programs are on the rise, and more attention is being continually paid to preventive medicine.

Calabrese, D.O., is a rheumatologist, osteopathic physician, and an internationally recognized HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C researcher at the Cleveland Clinic, where he serves as director of the clinic’s R.J. Fasenmyer Center for Clinical Immunology. He specializes in diseases of the immune system, in particular, immunodeficiency diseases, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other chronic viral infections. Dr. Calabrese is also co-director of the Center for Vasculitis Care and Research and has a particular interest in vascular inflammatory disease of the central nervous system.

An Erie native and graduate of John Carroll University and the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, Dr. Calabrese, 61, is the author of more than 300 published peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews. He has received many honors over the years but none greater than being named American Osteopathic Foundation Physician of the Year in 2014. Among those attending the ceremony were his wife and two daughters, including Dr. Cassandra Calabrese, a rheumatologist who works down the hall from him at the Cleveland Clinic.

His other honors include an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, the Phillips Medal of Public Service from the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Bruce Hubbard Stewart Award for humanitarianism, and the Leonard Tow Humanitarianism in Medicine Award from the Arnold P. Goldman MD Foundation. When he was awarded the Theodore F. Classen, D.O. Chair in Osteopathic Research and Education in 2008 he became the first dual-chair holder in Cleveland Clinic history.

Understanding President Trump: An Insider’s View of the 45th PresidentIf you watch cable news, the odds are good that you’ve heard his name. A former Deputy Assistant to President Donald Trump, he remains one of the President’s staunchest defenders long after he left the White House amid the ouster of Trump aide Steve Bannon in August 2017, and continues to make regular appearances to discuss the Trump White House. And while calling the Trump White House unconventional may be an understatement, studying and understanding its inner-workings makes the feat all the more exciting and fascinating, as the populace, be draped in either red or blue, remains intrigued by the 45th President’s approach to the executive branch of the United States.

Enter Sebastian Gorka.

Gorka, 47, who was born in London to Hungarian parents, lived in Hungary from 1992 to 2008, and became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 2012. He has worked for the Hungarian Ministry of Defense and, following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, became a public figure in Hungary as a counterterrorism expert. He has since served in a number of roles related to terrorism and security.

After leaving the White House, Gorka, who earned a B.A. degree from the University of London and a Ph.D. from Corvinus University of Budapest, became Chairman and CEO of the Threat Knowledge Group and a national security strategist for FOX News. From 2014 to 2016, he was an editor for national security affairs for Breitbart News, where he worked for Bannon, whom he followed in and out of the White House.

To better understand President Trump and his headline-inducing White House, who better to hear from than someone who generates and comments on those headlines? Especially just one day after the mid-term elections.

The Assault on Intelligence: American National Security in an Age of LiesWhat do a retired United States Air Force four-star general, a former Director of the National Security Agency, a former Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and a former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency all have in common? In this case, they’re all Michael Hayden.

A Pittsburgh native who will make his second appearance at the Jefferson’s Global Summit, Hayden rose to the top ranks of the Air Force and federal government administration while becoming an expert in global terrorism. Since then, he has become a co-chairman of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Electric Grid Cyber Security Initiative, a national security analyst for CNN, and an author twice over.

His first book, Playing to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror, which was published in 2016, focused on surveillance polices, interrogation, and targeted killing. His second book, The Assault on Intelligence: American National Security in an Age of Lies (published earlier this year), began with him back in Pittsburgh sharing a few pints with fellow Pittsburghers. Why was he there, and why now?

Was it to revel in some of his past memories as an equipment manager for the Pittsburgh Steelers? Was it to tell the tales of his quarterbacking at St. Peter’s Elementary School for volunteer coach Dan Rooney, later owner and chairman of the Steelers?

No, he was looking for clues as to why America had elected Donald Trump president. What results is an alarming look at the effect on the intelligence community and the public’s perception of it.

“The more important, absorbing and disturbing aspect of Hayden’s book is the analysis from his professional perspective of what Trump and Trumpism mean for the intelligence community,” writes the Washington Post’s Mark Galeotti. “It is sober, nuanced and, quite frankly, scary as hell.”

What Truth Sounds Like: Robert F. Kennedy, James Baldwin, and Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in AmericaIn 1963, Attorney General Robert Kennedy met with James Baldwin and some of Baldwin’s friends to discuss the conflicts that threatened Black America. The meeting angered Kennedy, but his anger evolved into empathy. The meeting then changed Kennedy’s thinking in fundamental ways.

Michael Eric Dyson, 60, will discuss that fateful meeting, which he featured in his latest book, What Truth Sounds Like: RFK, James Baldwin, and Our Unfinished Conversation About Race in America. Dyson addresses the impact of the meeting on history and events leading to today’s Black Lives Matter movement. He also takes an in-depth look at whether political resolution or moral redemption will mend our broken racial landscape.

An ordained minister who was born and raised in Detroit, Dyson is a prolific author and writer, authoring and editing more than 20 books dealing with topics such as Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Marvin Gaye, Nas’s debut album Illmatic, Tupac Shakur, and Hurricane Katrina. He is a sociology professor at Georgetown University, a New York Times contributing opinion writer, and a contributing editor for The New Republic.

Dyson regularly appears on various talk shows, such as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Real Time with Bill Maher, Good Morning America, The Today Show, NPR’s All Things Considered, Meet the Press, and This Week with George Stephanopoulos to debate people from all walks of life.

He earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University and has taught at several other universities, such as Brown University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Columbia University, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Presidential Leadership in Turbulent TimesAre leaders born or made? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader? This and more will be discussed by Doris Kearns Goodwin, a world-renowned presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author.

Goodwin’s latest book, Leadership in Turbulent Times, culminates five decades of studying American presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Through studying these presidents and notable historical leaders, Goodwin develops a road map for aspiring and established leaders in all fields and for everyone in their everyday lives.

Goodwin, 75, who lectured before a sold-out crowd at Global Summit VIII in 2016 at Mercyhurst University, is the author of six critically acclaimed and New York Times best-selling books, including her 2013 book, The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism. Winner of the Carnegie Medal, The Bully Pulpit is a dynamic history of the first decade of the Progressive era, that tumultuous time when the nation was coming unseamed and reform was in the air. Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Studios has acquired the film rights to that book and boasts previous work with Goodwin’s material, having drawn from Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln for the Academy Award-winning Lincoln.

Her storied career has also involved working closely with President Johnson, being the first female journalist to enter the Boston Red Sox locker room, and she appears regularly on NBC’s Meet the Press.

Goodwin, who earned a Ph.D. in government from Harvard University, was married to the late Richard Goodwin. She has two sons, Michael and Joseph.

The Debate: Howard Dean and Elise Jordan In the spirit of democratic argument, not partisan politics, political experts Howard Dean and Elise Jordan will represent liberal and conservative thought, respectively, in a debate moderated by Global Summit X Chairman Steve Scully.

Dean, who will turn 70 on Nov. 17, is an American physician, author, and retired politician who served as Governor of Vermont from 1991 to 2003. After competing for the Democratic nomination for president in 2004, he chaired the Democratic National Committee for four years and has been a political consultant, commentator, and unofficial voice of the Democratic Party ever since. Dean appeared at the Jefferson’s Global Summit V in 2013.

Dean, a graduate of Yale University, earned his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is married to Judith Steinberg, M.D., and they have two children, Anne and Paul.

Elise Jordan, 28, a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC and a contributor to Time magazine, was a policy adviser to U.S. Senator Rand Paul’s 2016 presidential campaign. During the George W. Bush administration, Jordan worked in the White House Office of Presidential Speechwriting and at the State Department as a speechwriter and adviser to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Born and raised in Holly Springs, Miss., Jordan is a graduate of Yale University. Jordan, her husband Mike Hogan, and her Corgi, Bobby Sneakers, live in New York City.

Front Row Seat to History: From President Ford to President Trump While Who frontman Roger Daltrey famously sang “meet the new boss, same as the old boss” in the 1971 classic “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” it’s safe to say that from politics to leadership styles and everything in between, things have changed throughout the years in the Oval Office. So who better to bring perspective to the national news media scene and coverage of the White House throughout the decades than award-winning veterans Bill Plante, Ann Compton, and Steve Scully?

Plante, 80, a retired senior White House correspondent for CBS News, also reported regularly for CBS Evening News and CBS This Morning during his 52 years at CBS. In addition to covering seven presidents, Plante covered the 1965 civil rights marches, the Vietnam War, and the fall of Saigon. A graduate of Loyola University, he also attended Columbia University. Plante, who grew up in Chicago, is married to television producer Robin Smith. He has two sons, Michael and Dan, from a previous marriage, and four other adopted children.

Ann Compton, 71, was an award-winning journalist at ABC News during her trailblazing 41-year career. In 1974 she became the first female to cover the White House for a network news organization and has reported on every president since Gerald Ford.

A Chicago native, Compton was raised in Winnetka, Ill., and is married to Dr. William Hughes, a Washington, D.C., physician. They are the parents of three sons and a daughter. Despite her many achievements, Compton said that her most valued award is a golden statuette from the National Mothers’ Day Committee naming her a Mother of the Year in 1988.

Scully, 58, born and raised in Erie, is the political editor and host of C-SPAN’s popular daily show, Washington Journal. In addition to his extensive experience in journalism, Scully interned for U.S. Senator Joe Biden and served as staff assistant in Sen. Edward Kennedy’s media affairs office. He earned his Master’s degree in Journalism at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Steve and his wife, Katie, have four children, Mary Cate, Danny, Cristen, and Natalie Cathleen.

After working in the Peace Corps in Africa as a young man, he worked in the U.S. Senate, served as a presidential speechwriter, and became the top aide to legendary House Speaker Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill.

Matthews had already experienced a full career when “Hardball” was launched on MSNBC in 1997, with its title taken from Matthews’ best-selling handbook on real-life politics published in 1988. As his network biography points out, he has been “on the air every weekday night since” – more than 21 years.

He is the author of eight best-selling books, including: Tip and The Gipper: When Politics Worked; Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero; Hardball: How Politics is Played, Told by One Who Knows the Game; Kennedy & Nixon: The Rivalry that Shaped Postwar America; Now, Let Me Tell You What I Really Think; American: Beyond our Grandest Notions; and Life’s a Campaign.

His most recent book, Bobby Kennedy: A Raging Spirit, published in November 2017, has earned critical acclaim as well as becoming an instant best-seller.

Our Towns: Erie and AmericaPerhaps New York Times columnist David Brooks said it best about authors, scholars, and journalists James and Deborah Fallows when their new book, Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into the Heart of America (which features Erie, Pennsylvania as the final city they visit), was published in 2018: “James and Deborah Fallows have always moved to where history is being made. … They have an excellent sense of where world-shaping events are taking place at any moment – and a fervent commitment to be there to see it happen. … In these cities, the Fallows argue, citizen participants are coping with declining industries, creating new civic cultures, assimilating waves of immigration, and collaborating across party-lines to revive everything from arts programs to tech seedbeds.”

The Fallows are the recipients of the 2018 Hagen Dignitas Award for these very reasons – their great skills at shining the spotlight on everyday Americans in the communities where their work, live, play, hope, and struggle. They are experts on politics, China, middle America, economics, aeronautics but, most of all, communication.

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Redlands, Calif., Jim Fallows, 69, graduated from Harvard University and studied economics at Oxford as a Rhodes scholar. He has worked for decades as a correspondent for The Atlantic, and many other journalism challenges have taken him around the world many times – which may have at times been easier for him since he pilots his own plane. He is the author of numerous books, including 2012’s China Airborne, 1996’s Breaking the News: How the Media Undermine American Democracy, and 1989’s More Like Us: Making America Great Again.

Deborah Fallows, a native of Vermillion, Ohio, grew up sailing on Lake Erie. She is a linguist and writer with a Ph.D. in theoretical linguistics from the University of Texas in Austin. Among her celebrated books is Dreaming in Chinese: Mandarin Lessons in Life, Love, and Language, about which Lesley Downer for the The New York Times Book Review writes: “Rather than draw sweeping conclusions Fallows sticks to her own experiences and observations, which makes her book all the more valuable. China hands will have many moments of recognition. For others, Dreaming in Chinese will be a fascinating introduction to a foreign culture.”

The two met on a blind date while students at Harvard – James Fallows was three hours late. “But in a way it was kind of a good introduction to life with a journalist,” she later said, “forever after.”

They have two adult children, Thomas and Tad.

From a humble start as a two-day conference in 2009, the Jefferson’s annual Global Summit has grown to become an annual staple on Erie’s civic calendar. The Summit MissionJefferson audiences easily recognize the “big names” from Global Summits over the years, and there were many – Doris Kearns Goodwin, Cokie Roberts, E.J.
