Agee, 22, of Park Forest, was fatally shot Wednesday morning. Agee was a senior sociol- ogy major at NIU and involved in the Sociology Student Advisory Committee. “He was increasingly being recognized as a student leader within the major,” said So- ciology Department Chair Kirk Miller. Agee wasn’t only involved in his major at NIU, but also as a work- er in the Student Asso- ciation office. “He was a great man,” said SA Senate Speaker Austin Quick. “It’s just a very sad time and we want to keep Agee’s family in our prayers.” Agee graduated from Thornwood High School in South Holland, the Chicago Tribune reported. The senior had a job offer in San Diego after graduation, and his parents were to pick him up Wednesday morn- ing for Thanksgiving. “I just lost my baby boy. That’s it,” said his father, Steven Agee, in an interview with the Tribune. “And now there will be no more hol- idays with him, not even this one coming now.” Paul Palian, director of NIU Media and Pub- lic Relations, said Agee was involved in uni- versity leadership through the 2011 LEAD NIU Summit. Agee was also a peer instructor for the UNIV 101 course offered to first-semester freshmen, Palian said. According to Agee’s LinkedIn profile, he was the president of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraterni- ty from May 2009 to Jan. 2011. Agee was also a Northern Ambassador and a member of the Black Male Initiative, his profile states. Miller said Agee will be missed. “The department, faculty and staff are ex- tremely upset by the tragic death that re- sulted from whatever happened at the party [Wednesday],” Miller said. “We want to extend our sympathy to Steve’s family and we want to do whatever we can to ensure that students that knew Steve are OK. ... We are all sort of stunned by this turn of events and the trag- ic loss.” In a statement Wednesday morning, NIU President John Peters extended sympathy to Agee’s family and friends. “The NIU community is saddened by the death of Steven Agee, II this morning. Feithen said the shooting happened during an argument at a party there early Wednesday morning. “We had a shots fired call at 2:10 a.m. and we had the first officers there in about a minute,” Feithen said in an earlier interview Wednesday. “There was a large party oc- curring and our initial indication is that an argument oc- curred and a shot was fired.” Feithen said Agee was shot in the chest. Agee was pro- nounced dead at Kishwaukee Community Hospital about 2:45 a.m., said DeKalb Fire Chief Bruce Harrison. Clay Campbell, DeKalb County State’s Attorney, said dur- ing the press conference there are no other suspects or warrants for other arrests. Thrailkill is being held at the DeKalb County Jail on $3 million bond. Campbell said he faces a possible sentence of 20 years to life in prison for the murder charge and six to 30 years in prison for each of the other charges. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
