A message from Exalted Ruler, Jose Chavez

August is now upon us and summer is almost over.  I hope that all members have had an enjoyable summer.

Update on the status of the lodge - As of now, we are dealing with insurance issues that have popped up during the claim settlement.  I know many of you are frustrated with this. Trust me in saying that we, as the leadership of the lodge, are feeling this first hand.

There has not been a day that has gone by including weekends that we find ourselves dealing with emails and issues that have reared their ugly head.  We are committed to seeing the lodge rebuilt and brought back to its glory that you all remember.   Please understand that there have been many hurdles and hoops that we have crossed and will continue to deal with on a daily basis. This is a project that is insurance driven, so please be patient as we handle the insurance claim.Fraternally Jose Chavez ER, PER

The station of the Exalted Ruler is dedicated to Fidelity. Fidelity is defined as faithfulness to obligations, duties or observances. Let us all show our fidelity to OUR lodge and support the officers who are working tirelessly to get our

We continue to make progress toward our rebuild as many of you saw on July 8th when we started the next phase of demolition. Your continued support for our lodge activities helped make that possible, and I am truly

proud of the over 1,400 members who have renewed their annual dues in full, as well as the 300+ who have kept up with their 6-month dues. These critical funds have been our life-blood, and enabled us to keep up with all of our expenses, from utilities to required taxes and payments.

However, we still have over 400 lapsed members and want to maintain our membership as high as possible as we continue through our rebuild. This month, we have been calling lapsed members who have no e-mail on record. Many of these members, because of this, have had little or no update on the lodge progress or our activities. When I’ve called a few, they were surprised I was asking for dues because they literally did not know we were rebuilding!

In next month’s issue, we will be publishing the lapsation list so that you can see if anyone you know is on the list. We need everyone’s help to ensure our membership is kept intact while we continue to support our lodge activities and our rebuild efforts.

One such activity is our next District Veterans BBQ on Saturday, August 8th at the West LA Veteran’s Hospital. We meet at the lodge parking lot at 8:30am, and expect to be back before 3pm. Always a great way to support our disabled veterans and see how we work with other lodges! I hope you can join us, especially if you’ve thought about joining us but have not yet. I also encourage you to join us for a Monday meeting every so often. We open up the bar around 5:30pm, hold our meetings at 7:30pm, and reopen the bar for socializing and fellowship when the meeting concludes, all thanks to our lodge Ruf-Neks, who continue to serve our lodge with strength and sacrifice. We still hold our weekly raffles, including 50/50 drawings, and work to keep our regular attendees up to date on the latest lodge status. I look forward to Monday’s each week when I can talk to fellow members.

A Message from Leading Knight, John Stammreich

I hope everyone had a great Fourth of July celebrating with family and friends. Although we do not have Sunday

brunches at our Lodge, we do have Music by the Sea at Point Fermin which runs through August 2nd, where we gather together with family, friends, and acquaintances in the park, enjoy having picnics, listening to our local bands, dancing and just spending quality time with each other.

Many of you have asked, “When will the rebuild begin?” I am happy to report that it has begun! And we thank each and every one of you for your patience, understanding and your contributions. I would like to also thank our members who have continued to sponsor (bring in) new members, helping us financially during our time of perseverance. As our rebuild moves forward, please continue to support our lodge by attending Monday night meetings, sponsoring new members and making contributions.

Fraternally yours, Lucia Scerra-Nania

A Message from Loyal Knight, Julia Aquino

“Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” Princess Diana.

I want to open my article this month by saying thank you very kindly to all the new members and to all the members who have kept their memberships up to date. Its times like

these when we are in need that we come together and show our support and resolve to move forward as San Pedro Elks Lodge #966 that make me very proud of our membership. Your dues help to keep our bills paid, which include property taxes, Board of Equalization taxes, insurance, employee payroll and our electric bills.

I am proud to announce that we are in another phase of demolition and we are doing everything possible to keep everyone informed. That’s one more step closer to the doors of our remodeled Lodge being opened. As many of you may know these things take time. Before you know it, we will be back in our beautiful Lodge.

In the meantime, your membership can grant you entry into any Lodge in the country, district or in the State of California. People who love to travel use their membership where ever they go. I always recommend Google your trip and make phone calls ahead of time. Each lodge has office hours and a machine service to attend to your calls and questions.

We hold our meetings every Monday night at 7:30p.m. sharp! We need your email address to keep you abreast of upcoming events. Please call our office at 1-310-831-0624 and update your contact information with us. We still gather for events such as, the Veteran’s Hospital BBQ visitation in West Los Angeles, next one is scheduled for August 8, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. (If you would like to carpool, we meet at the lodge parking lot at 8:30a.m.).

And one last announcement, congratulations to new District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the South Central District, Norwalk Lodge #2142, Randy Alanis!

In parting as always, love and peace from, the Station of Justice,

Julia Aquino

...... where fun and camaraderie reign!

Next Luncheon Meeting Date: Wednesday, August 12, 2015 Place: Dalmatian-American Hall 1639 S. Palos Verdes Street (17th and Palos Verdes Streets in San Pedro) Time: Lunch served at 11:30 a.m. Menu: Grilled Tri-tip with au jus and Rice Pilaf OR Chef Tony’s “Catch-of-the-Day” Price: $15.00

ENTERTAINMENT: Historical impressionist Peter Small will portray Harry Truman.

I don’t know what happened last month, but we had over 100 confirmations (per the telephone committee) and only 88 people showed up. Consequently, we had to “eat” twelve dinners to make up our guarantee of 100 diners to the Dalmatian-American Club, our host.

Folks, our Club will financially cease to exist if this trend continues. If you say you will be there to a member of the phone committee, please make every effort to do just that – BE THERE! We might have to start billing the “no-shows” (as was suggested by a few of our members). I realize that, being our age, certain circumstances arise (mostly medical) that prevent us from attending, but 12 people? Come on!

If you would like to invite friends, relatives, etc., to attend – please do so and so we don’t run out of food, please inform the members of the phone committee at the time they call you for your attendance/menu choices.

Your suggestions for “keeping the ship afloat” are welcome and will be considered by the Officers.

See you (and your friends/guests) on the 12th!

John Brunac Chairman

365 Days to Abundant Health: The Little Steps That Help You Thrive is newly released book by Six Bells Editor, Kim M. White. She wrote it to help as many people as possible become healthier. It is available in hardcover, soft cover and e-book through amazon.com, Barnes and Noble online and at balboapress.com.

… from the Public Relations Committee

In order to generate articles for publication in local newspapers and our two Elks magazines, I need input from our various committees. I know we all would love to see photos of our committee activities and write-ups of events in our magazines, too. Photos are an added plus, but stories alone are better than nothing at all. Please help me get us published in our magazines. It is so nice to open the magazine and find something in print about what’s going with committees from our busy Lodge.

The Daily Breeze newspaper requires two weeks advance notice of an event, and I need about a week ahead of that to be sure I have the time to confirm dates, fees, location, etc., and submit it in time for publication to promote your event.

Please send me your write-ups and photos of recent events or information for upcoming events and let’s enjoy seeing the San Pedro Elks Lodge listed in not only our local newspaper, but our Elks National and CHEA magazines, too. I can also use group photos with good ‘faces’ that people take at our events. Please be sure to give me the names (and titles) of everyone in the photo(s). Photos must be in either a ‘.jgp’ format or full-size ipad, no cell phone photos as they are too tiny. Please contact me with summaries of your latest event so that I may send them in for publication in our magazines. You may contact me via email at [email protected] and if you do not have email, you may call me during the evenings or weekends at 310-521-0431 (leave a message if I am not home). I look forward to hearing from you! Fraternally Yours, Patti Folsom-Medina

In 1950, CHEA created an organization to help children with disabilities. The fundraising arm of CHEMPI is the Purple Pig. Your tax deductible donation provides professional occupational and physical therapists, preschool vision screening, and speech-language pathologists throughout the state of California.

Consider donating TODAY!Challenge to all Life Members

Assistant Chaplain and Life Member, Tony DeGirolamo, suggests that if all life members pay $100 for their dues this year ($82 for dues, $3.65 for the Purple Pig and $14.35 for the General Fund) the Lodge will receive over $4,000 extra to help us through the current financial situation. Life members, let’s all help OUR lodge weather the storm.
