LOS ANGELES After a 10-year-oldCalifornia girl traveled to the Vatican toplead with Pope Francis for help as herfather faced deportation, the man wasreleased Friday on bond from immigrationdetention.

Mario Vargas was freed from a detentionfacility in Louisiana after he posted $5,000bond. A relative who saw the girl on televi-sion pleading with the pope during a pub-lic audience helped with the funding, saidhis wife, Lola Vargas.

“When she left, her wish was that herfather would be home,” she told TheAssociated Press in Spanish. “Thank Godshe is going to get her wish.”

Mario Vargas’ release came after hisdaughter Jersey, of Panorama City, Calif.,addressed the pope this week as part of aCalifornia delegation that traveled to urge

the Vatican to prod President BarackObama on immigration reform. The girland a teenager went as part of the 16-mem-ber group to represent the American chil-dren of immigrant parents who are afraidtheir families will be divided by deporta-tion. The president and the pontiff met forthe first time Thursday.

“I feel very happy and proud becauseI’m finally going to have my dad back andwe’re going to be reunited,” Jersey told theAP late Friday before boarding a flight fromRome to Los Angeles.

She said her father was also heading toLos Angeles, and that she hoped he wouldget there before her arrival.

“I haven’t seen him in two years,” shesaid. “It’s been very hard since my dad has-n’t been home. My mom has had to be theprovider for my family, she’s been themother and father for two years.”

Mario Vargas was arrested last year inTennessee and convicted of driving under

the influence before he was taken into fed-eral custody earlier this month, said BryanCox, a spokesman for Immigration andCustoms Enforcement. Authorities releasedhim after he posted bond, and an immigra-tion judge will determine the outcome ofhis deportation case, Cox said.

Lola Vargas said she had been gatheringmoney to pay for her Mexican husband’sbond but didn’t have enough until one ofhis cousins called, surprised to see the girlon television, and offered to help. Her hus-band had gone to Tennessee to look forwork in construction and had been sendingmoney to his family in California, she said.

A message left for Vargas’ immigrationattorney, Alex Galvez, seeking commentwas not immediately returned.

Juan Jose Gutierrez, an immigrant advo-cate who coordinated the trip to Italy, saidthe archdiocese of Los Angeles helped getthe group a key spot so they could speakwith Pope Francis amid the crowds.

Airport serves a purposeEditor:

How is it that Valerie Davidson (“Not-so-friendlyskies,” Letters to the Editor, March 28), a Mar Vista res-ident, or any other resident living outside the city ofSanta Monica, can talk about what Santa Monica needsor wants for its own airport. She says that the majorityof residents want the airport closed. But is that reallywhat the majority of Santa Monicans want?

The airport brings in millions of dollars into theeconomy of Santa Monica and its surroundings andmultitudes of patients needing the health facilities ofSanta Monica’s health resources. All of these indigentand needy patients are brought in from far outlyingareas or taken back home at no expense to them bymany pilots, including me, through voluntarily donatingour time, use of our aircraft, and at our own expense, through the coordination of Angel Flight, an organiza-tion started here at SMO in the early 1980s, still basedhere at SMO, and since gone nationwide. Take awaySMO and you have taken away the hopes of thousandsof needy, sick and potentially doomed adults and chil-dren, whose only hope is the care they receive fromhealth facilities in and around Santa Monica. Most, ifnot all of these patients, would suffer severely if not forAngel Flight West, because most could not tolerate thelong drive from their homes, or afford the costs oftransportation they would have to pay otherwise.

And as far as being a health risk to the community, what about all those fumes generated by those auto-mobiles and trucks that ply our streets, contributingthousands of amounts of fumes and contaminationmore than are generated by the aircraft that come andgo to and from SMO. By the same reason that theSanta Monica City Council is contemplating closingdown fuel sales at SMO, perhaps they should also bancars and trucks from our streets and close down allservice stations that sell gasoline to them in our city,as well. Isn’t that what one would consider being anti-discriminatory?

My Write

THIS YEAR, THE RACE FOR THE THIRDDistrict of the Los Angeles County Board ofSupervisors promises to be a donnybrook.

The district includes Santa Monica andparts of the Westside, Beverly Hills, Fairfax,Hollywood, Agoura, Malibu, and areas of theSan Fernando Valley ranging fromNorthridge and Woodland Hills to StudioCity

Zev Yaroslavsky has finally termed outand the front runners to replace him are for-mer Santa Monica City Councilman andMayor Bobby Shriver and Sacramento leg-islative veteran Sheila Kuehl. A few weeksago, I endorsed Shriver because I know he’lldo an awesome job.

Shriver is an imaginative thinker, success-ful businessman and solves problems “out ofthe box.” Unlike most “spend and tax” politi-cians, he regularly utilizes entrepreneurialmethods and taps private enterprise or hisworldwide resources to achieve amazingoutcomes.

Tackling poverty and AIDS in Africa is ahuge undertaking. Instead of relying onslow-acting governments to step up, Shrivercreated several global organizations includ-ing “RED,” “One” and “Data” to raise hun-dreds of millions of dollars to fight AIDSand improve human lives in the poorestplaces on the planet.

“A Very Special Christmas,” co-pro-duced by Shriver, is the single most suc-cessful benefit recording in musical histo-ry with over $116 million in royalties andinvestment proceeds generated for theSpecial Olympics.

Shriver pushed hard to get the VeteransAdministration to renovate derelict build-ings on its West Los Angeles campus toprovide much-needed housing and healthservices for homeless vets. ThroughShiver’s efforts, the VA is close to openingone of three renovated domiciles express-ly for mentally impaired, homeless veter-ans.

While on City Council (2004-12), heworked to fight traffic, resolve homelessproblems, clean up the Santa Monica Bayand make City Hall more responsible to thepeople. Shriver wasn’t afraid to challenge thestatus quo.

He supported Measure T, a citizen-creat-ed 2008 ballot referendum. The 15-yearmeasure would have limited commercialdevelopment to 75,000 square feet annuallyin an effort to manage traffic. It was strong-ly opposed by developers and Downtownbusiness interests.

Sheila Kuehl served 14 years inSacramento. While there, she authored 171bills that were signed into law, including leg-islation to establish paid family leave, over-haul California’s child support services sys-tem, protect domestic violence victims andtheir children. She also worked to prohibitdiscrimination on the basis of gender anddisability in the workplace and sexual orien-tation in education among many othersaccording to her campaign website.

Yet, there’s something about Kuehl thatreally bothers me.

Previously, I mentioned Measure T (alsoknown as RIFT or Residents Initiative toFight Traffic) that capped commercial devel-opment — like the 770,000-square-footHines project that’s now the subject of a cit-izen referendum. Unfortunately, it failed thatNovember, but it was a watershed event in

Santa Monica politics.Developers spent $800,000 to defeat it

— a record for a local campaign —through contributions to “Save Our City”(SOS) the anti-T committee headed bypresent Mayor Pro-tem Terry O’Day andJudy Abdo. Abdo is a former Mayor andcouncilwoman (1988-1996) and a mem-ber of the powerful Santa Monicans forRenters’ Rights (SMRR) SteeringCommittee. She’s been the developersSMRR “go-to” person for years.

I dove into my extensive campaign litera-ture collection and found a pile of SOSpropaganda. One mailer quoted Kuehl: “Ioppose Measure T because it furtherencourages landlords to demolish affordableapartments and displace renters. Vote No onT to protect renters.”

Kuehl had to know that Measure Taddressed only commercial developmentand specifically exempted residential prop-erty. It had nothing to do with renters and itdidn’t encourage landlords to “demolishaffordable apartments.”

Nevertheless, she continued to lay it onthick. “It will put the security of seniorsand working families at risk and will jeop-ardize our already diminishing supply ofaffordable housing,” screamed anotherKuehl mailer. This was also complete andutter nonsense.

Kuehl is a smart woman, She must’veknown that her statements completely mis-represented the measure. So, why did sheparticipate in this scam? Developer moneyfor her next political run, like for supervisor?Maybe. But, take a look at a quote on yetanother misleading SOS brochure head-lined, “Measure T will harm renters andworking families.”

“Measure T will allow landlords to dis-place existing renters and replace affordableapartments with expensive condos. It willnot reduce traffic like it claims.” It’s notKuehl’s quote but that of her BFF (BestFriend Forever), SOS co-chair Judy Abdoidentified on the mailer as “SteeringCommittee Member, Santa Monicans forRenters’ Rights.” Ouch! Somebody else’spants are on fire, too.

I think that Kuehl made a bad decision indoing a favor for Abdo and blew her owncredibility by parroting the lies. Did theythink we are too stupid to recognize a bla-tant deception?

Despite the sorry history, of courseSMRR endorsed Kuehl for Supervisor. Iwonder whether her other politicalendorsers were/are aware of how she tried tomislead an entire electorate.

What else will she misrepresent if shewins Yaroslavsky’s seat? The County Boardof Supervisors is one of the most pro-devel-opment entities in all of government. That’swhy we need Shriver.

He supported Measure T and flew in theface of the SOS developer clique. Shriverproved that he’s independent and can’t bebought. Kuehl on the other hand supportedbig money developers and their cronies bydeliberately misinforming voters about aballot measure. She should be ashamed ofherself.

The Third District needs a supervisorwith integrity who won’t prevaricate andflim-flam us. Kuehl? No way, Jose!

DARRINGTON, Wash. Families coping withthe loss of friends and neighbors soughtcomfort Sunday in church services, whilecrews searched for more victims of the mud-slide that buried the mountainside commu-nity of Oso more than a week ago.

Many of the dogs that have been essentialin the search will take a two-day break, res-cue crews said. Days of working in the coldand rain have taken their toll on the animals, and officials say the dogs can lose their sens-ing ability if overworked.

“The conditions on the slide field are dif-ficult, so this is just a time to take care of thedogs,” said Kris Rietmann, a spokeswomanfor the team working on the eastern portionof the slide, which hit March 22 about 55miles northeast of Seattle and is one of thedeadliest in U.S. history.

Dogs from the Federal EmergencyManagement Agency that arrived more recent-ly will continue working, said Heidi Amrine, another spokeswoman for the operation.

Late Saturday, authorities revised thenumber of people believed to be missingfrom 90 to 30, while the official death tollincreased by one, to 18, said JasonBiermann, program manager at theSnohomish County Department ofEmergency Management.

Officials have said they had expected thenumber of missing to change as they workedto find people safe and cross-referenced a listthat likely included partial information andduplicate reports.

Authorities have said they recoveredmore than two dozen bodies, but they won’tbe added to the official tally until a formalidentification is made. Underscoring the dif-ficulty of that task, Biermann said crews arenot always discovering complete remains.

Crews have completed a makeshift road thatwill link one side of the debris field to the other, significantly aiding the recovery operation.

They have also been working to clearmud and debris from the highway, leavingpiles of gooey muck, splintered wood andhousing insulation on the sides of the road.

Searchers have had to contend withtreacherous conditions, including septictanks, gasoline and propane containers.

When rescuers and dogs leave the site, they are hosed off by hazardous materialscrews.

The slide dammed up the North Fork ofthe Stillaguamish River, causing water topool up on the east side. The river cut a newchannel through the mud, but the rain hasraised the water level nearly a foot,Rietmann said.

In at least one place, the water level got sohigh that it covered areas that have alreadybeen searched, said Tim Pierce, leader ofWashington Task Force 1, a search-and-res-cue team.

“At this point, there’s no point in search-ing (that area) again until the water dropsback down,” he said.

Rescuers should get some relief soon.Conditions were improving Sunday, andmainly dry weather is forecast Mondaythrough Wednesday in western Washington.

The size of the debris field is also smallerthan initially thought, officials said Sunday. After review and analysis, geologists havedetermined it is about 300 acres — justunder half the size of an earlier projection ofone square mile.

Away from the whirring chain saws androaring bulldozers, many residents of nearbyDarrington sought comfort in church serv-ices before another week of recovery efforts.

“I can only compare it to a hot, heartymeal after a very cold day,” said SlavaBotamanenko, who works at the hospital inArlington. He said he spent two nights thereto be sure he was available for work after themudslide blocked a road.

All week, a steady stream of people hasstopped in to pray at the Glad TidingsAssembly of God on the edge of town, saidLee Hagen, the senior pastor.

“At a time like this, everybody knowsthey’ve got to have God’s help,” he said.

Steve Huot, lead chaplain for theArlington Fire Department, said he is seeingpeople in various states. Some are in shock, while others have begun to grasp the realityof the disaster. Many are exhausted.

“It’s more about listening right now. Youneed to encourage them and maybe changetheir focus to staying busy for the group, forthe team,” he said. “You might need to drivethem into something productive and makesure that they feel a sense of accomplish-ment and contribution.”

Dear EarthTalk:What are some cool apps that work with

a mobile phone that can help me get in bet-ter touch with the environment?

Mitchell BrownTroy, Mich

NOT SURPRISINGLY, THERE ARE THOU-sands of “green” apps out there that make iteasier for people to find and share informa-tion to help us all become better stewards ofthe natural environment.

The American Lung Association’s State ofthe Air app shows live color-coded air quali-ty maps for any U.S. location and includesboth ozone and particulate pollution counts. The app also provides air quality alerts,short-term forecasts and opportunities tolearn more about air quality risks and tocontact lawmakers to push for more strin-gent pollution regulations. Another way tofind out who’s emitting what nearby is viaaMobileFuture’s Pollution, a free app thatcompiles information from various pollu-tion databases around the world and thenshows users which big polluters are emittingwhat near them. Coverage includes 1,380cities, mostly in Europe and the U.S.

Ethical shoppers will appreciate theGoodGuide, a free app that shows how anyof 120,000 food, personal care and house-hold products stack up in terms of sustain-ability, fair wages and even health risks.Users just snap a picture of an item’s barcode to get the low-down on whether or notit’s a “good” buy. And the free JouleBug appturns living greener into a game, taking spe-cific sustainability-oriented steps such asreducing energy use, recycling more or buy-ing local and translating these small acts intopositive “units of impact.” Embedded videosdemonstrate ways once can green up dailylife.

Adair Systems’ 99 cents GasHog appmakes it easy to track a car’s fuel efficiency.

Enter the odometer reading and amount offuel added each time you refill the tank andthe app calculates the fuel economy of theprevious tank and compares it to historicalaverages. The app also offers tips for improv-ing fuel economy. And Avego’s freeCarmaCarpooling app matches nearby driv-ers with riders to share the commute and theexpense. At the end of the trip, the rider cansend a payment through the system to thedriver to cover a share of gas and wear-and-tear.

PaperKarma is a free app to help reducejunk mail. Users input their address infor-mation once and then snap a picturethrough the app of any unwanted junk mail.Behind the scenes, PaperKarma’s automatedsystem notifies the publisher to take theuser’s name and address off their list.

Another popular app is Light BulbFinder, a free app designed to help ease thetransition from older incandescent bulbs tomore energy efficient replacements. Usersenter in their zip code-the app automatical-ly inputs average regional electricity ratesaccordingly-and then choose which type offixture, size/shape and wattage bulb(s) theyare looking to replace. The app then suggestsoptions that use less energy and shows howmuch money the user can expect to savewith the newer bulb(s).

It’s nice to know that the little screenswe’ve become increasingly dependentupon-and which otherwise tend to dis-tract us from nature and the outdoors-canalso be used for the betterment of theenvironment.

WICHITA, Kan. Farmers from across thenation gathered in Washington this monthfor what has become an annual trek to seekaction on the most important matters inAmerican agriculture, such as immigrationreform and water regulations.

But this time, a new, more shadowy issuealso emerged: growing unease about how thelargest seed companies are gathering vastamount of data from sensors on tractors, combines and other farm equipment.

The increasingly common sensors meas-ure soil conditions, seeding rates, crop yieldsand many other variables, allowing compa-nies to provide farmers with customizedguidance on how to get the most out of theirfields.

The involvement of the American FarmBureau, the nation’s largest and mostprominent farming organization, illustrateshow agriculture is cautiously entering anew era in which raw planting data holdsboth the promise of higher yields and theperil that the information could be hackedor exploited by corporations or govern-ment agencies.

Seed companies want to harness the datato help farmers grow more food with thesame amount of land, and the industry’sbiggest brands have offered assurances thatall information will be closely guarded.

But farmers are serving notice inWashington that the federal governmentmight need to become involved in yet anoth-er debate over electronic security and priva-cy. Some members of Congress from ruralstates such as Kansas were already aware ofthe concerns, although the issue is new tomany urban lawmakers.

Rep. Lynn Jenkins, a Kansas Republicanwho grew up on a dairy farm, said agricul-ture must achieve technological advances tokeep up with population growth, which isexpected to require 60 percent more food by2050. But she has heard farmers’ concernsabout data collection.

“Information and data utilization is theway of the future,” Jenkins said in an emailedstatement. “And just as our federal govern-ment struggles with privacy concernsthrough records at the NSA and varioushealth records, so too must we maintainappropriate privacy protection of individu-als from corporate entitles.”

The Farm Bureau isn’t sure what it needsfrom Washington, or whether action is evenwarranted yet. But farmers want their elect-ed officials to be aware of how the industryis changing.

This year’s trip to Washington was pri-marily “an educational effort” to make suremembers of Congress know about the datacollecting and understand “the implica-tions of the issue for our farmers andranchers,” Steve Baccus, an Ottawa Countyfarmer and president of the Kansas FarmBureau. “We may need to come back atsome time in the future and talk to themabout legislation.”

Farmers worry that a hedge fund or largecompany with access to “real-time” yielddata from hundreds of combines at harvesttime might be able to use that informationto speculate in commodities markets longbefore the government issues crop-produc-tion estimates.

Others are concerned that GPS-linkedfarm data could be obtained by theEnvironmental Protection Agency, antago-nistic environmental groups or, in the Farm

Bureau’s words, “an overall-clad EdwardSnowden,” a reference to the formerNational Security Agency analyst who dis-closed intelligence-gathering operations.

“It is not like we don’t all trust them,”Mark Nelson, director of commodities forthe Kansas Farm Bureau, said of agribusi-ness companies. The new data-collectionsystems deliver “a lot of good things” to pro-ducers. “But as an organization we are look-ing at, ‘What is the big picture?’”

The Farm Bureau Federation put togeth-er a “privacy expectation guide” to educateits members and recently drafted a policyasserting that data should remain thefarmer’s property. The bureau also opposesallowing any federal agency to serve as aclearinghouse for proprietary or aggregateddata collected by private companies.

Agribusiness giant Monsanto and othercorporations have tried to allay fears by reas-suring farmers their data is secure and willnot be used beyond providing services farm-ers request.

This season, growers in Illinois, Indiana,Iowa and Minnesota can even buy for thefirst time a Monsanto “prescription” thatoffers a precise seeding recipe tailored totheir soil type, disease history and pests.

The St. Louis-based company, which hasdominated the bioengineered seed businessfor more than a decade, expects to expand itsprescription services to other states. It callsthe advancements the “Green DataRevolution” — a play off the so-called GreenRevolution of the 20th century in whichmechanical, chemical and biologicaladvancements drove unprecedented increas-es in food production.

Monsanto expects the use of ag data tooffer comparable improvements in thenext few years. It bought PrecisionPlanting, a high-tech farm equipmentmaker, in 2012, followed last October bythe purchase of the Climate Corporation, adata-analytics firm that provides weather-related farm services and crop insuranceand is handling Monsanto’s fledgling data-related services.

The Green Data Revolution will helpfarmers make more profit per acre, saidDave Friedberg, chief executive officer ofThe Climate Corporation. The averagefarmer, he says, won’t have to be “techsavvy.”

“Tech will just become integral to thework that they do ... in the same way thatmore than 100 years ago, we adoptedmachine-based farming equipment as thestandard in the industry,” Friedberg said.

Companies are also pushing an Open AgData Alliance, which would set uniform datastandards and allow systems built by differ-ent manufacturers to talk to one another.

Farm equipment manufacturer JohnDeere has partnered with DuPont Pioneer totout what it calls “Decision Services,” a sys-tem in which farmers upload data ontoservers that respond by sending seed and fer-tilizer prescriptions directly to Deere trac-tors in the field. Other companies offer serv-ices that let farmers connect a tablet com-puter to the seed monitor in the cab anddownload the information.

Farm groups are conflicted about whatrole, if any, government should have in reg-ulating data-gathering practices.

“We don’t believe ultimately there is alegislative fix for this,” said Terry Holdren, chief executive officer and general counselfor the Kansas Farm Bureau. “It is a contrac-tual model for folks who have technologyand folks who want technology.”

CHICAGO It’s hard to think of Wrigley Fieldas anything but a place of heartbreak — aplace where fans wait, season after season, for an elusive World Series title that nevercomes.

Yet in the century without a champi-onship, the ballpark has been in first timeand time again in changing the way Americawatches baseball.

It was the first to let fans keep foul balls. The first with permanent concession stands. The first with organ music. The first to cleanthe park and broadcast games as part of aneffort to diversify the fan base and attractwomen and their kids to a game traditional-ly more popular among men.

“We think of all this as so obvious, butback then this was considered revolution-ary,” said Cubs historian Ed Hartig.

The ballpark will mark its 100th birthdaythis spring, and the Cubs plan a celebrationin April to honor one of the nation’s mostclassic ballparks, where runs still register ona manual scoreboard and watching a game islike taking a step back in time. As the centen-nial approaches, the Cubs and Chicago havefound themselves stuck in a debate abouthow far to go in modernizing the ballparkwith the same Jumbotron that towers overother fields.

“When you put a Jumbotron in the out-field I think you are messing with whatmakes Wrigley Wrigley,” said Phillip Bess, director of graduate studies at the Universityof Notre Dame’s architecture school andwho helped lead an effort to save FenwayPark from demolition. “If the Cubs do that itmeans they really don’t understand what it isabout Wrigley that is unique (and) the kindof place people will come to even when theteam is bad.”

But don’t be so quick to call Wrigley Fielda tired, old home of a perennial loser. It mayhave been the last ballpark to install lightsfor night games, but he park’s ivy-coveredwalls are a defining feature of what was oncea sparkling, modern ballpark run by menwho were trying to create a new experiencefor fans.

The park was built by a man namedCharles Weeghman for a team in somethingcalled the Federal League, which was tryingto give the more established National andAmerican Leagues — which the Cubs andthe crosstown White Sox played in — a run

for their money. After hiring the same architect who a few

years earlier designed Comiskey Park for theWhite Sox, workers needed just two monthsto demolish the buildings that once housed aseminary and build a simple, single-storygrandstand and the rest of the 14,000-seatWeeghman Park just in time for the start ofthe 1914 season. Finished two years afterBoston’s Fenway Park, it cost about$250,000. Two years after the park opened, the Cubs moved in.

“It was considered a great looking park, alot nicer than the rat-infested park the Cubswere playing in on the West Side,” said StuartShea, author of “Wrigley Field: The LongLife and Contentious Times of the FriendlyConfines.”

More important is that it was built withan eye to the future: It could be retrofittedand expanded, something that was consid-ered genius, he said.

From almost the day it was built, theowners started tinkering with the place. After nine homers were hit in the first threegames — an astronomical total for the time— the Chicago Federals, the original ten-ants, picked up the left field fence andmoved it back about as much as 50 feet insome spots. In the early ‘20s, the Cubsexpanded the seating capacity and the size ofthe playing field itself by slicing the grand-stand into 11 pieces and moving them tocreate more space. The pitcher’s moundtoday sits where the batters’ box used to be.

Wrigley also was keen to understand theCubs were losing money because womensimply refused to come, or let their childrencome, to a filthy and unsafe ballpark.

The park, renamed Cubs Park in 1919,began to feel different than anyplace else.Shea believes the reasons start withWeegham’s obsession with cleanliness, something he learned in the restaurant busi-ness. Hartig said it was William Wrigley Jr.,team owner P.K. Wrigley’s father, who, aftera couple years of investing in the team, bought Weeghman’s shares and started mak-ing changes.

“The Cubs were really the first ones tostart cleaning the ballpark after every singlegame and (make) sure that the playersalways had the cleanest uniforms,” Hartigsaid.

Wrigley also cleaned up the way the parkoperated.

“You could have a ticket and someonewould be sitting in your seat already becausethe usher was bribed,” Hartig said.

In a century at Wrigley, innovations abound

that “artistic license has been taken” intelling the story.

The polarizing attention apparently paidoff for “Noah,” which features such additionsto the well-known Bible story as angelic rockcreatures and chic wardrobes for Noah andhis family.

“Noah,” which also stars JenniferConnelly and Emma Watson, also sailedsmoothly in 22 international markets, suchas Russia and Australia, earning $33.6 mil-lion abroad.

“It certainly feels like the film has reallyconnected with both mainstream moviego-ers who are looking for a really sophisticatedfilm and those folks who really want to see amovie that honors their faith,” said RobMoore, Paramount vice chairman. “It’s beena very interesting journey to get to thispoint, but it’s definitely a spectacularlaunch.”

“Noah” is the latest faith-centric film towin over audiences this year. Others includethe independently released “God’s NotDead,” which earned $9 million in its secondouting this weekend, and “Son of God,”whose domestic total now stands at $57.9million since opening last month.

“I think these biblical-themed movies are

like the next frontier in Hollywood,” saidPaul Dergarabedian, senior media analystfor box-office tracker Rentrak. “Hollywoodhadn’t cracked the code on a biblical moviethat would have mainstream appeal. Now, Ithink they’ve figured it out. We may see aflood — pun intended — coming down thepipeline. We already have ‘Heaven is for Real’and ‘Exodus’ slated for later this year.”

Elsewhere at the box office, Lionsgate’steen science-fiction thriller “Divergent” star-ring Shailene Woodley came in second placeand earned $26.5 million in its second week-end, bringing its domestic total to $95.3 mil-lion.

“Muppets Most Wanted,” the globe-trot-ting Muppet sequel from Disney featuringTina Fey and Ricky Gervais, captured thirdplace with $11.4 million in its second week-end. The latest Muppet caper’s total domes-tic haul is now at $33.2 million.

The weekend’s other major new release,“Sabotage,” flopped in the seventh spot with$5.3 million. The Open Road action flickstarring Arnold Schwarzenegger is the latestfailure for the former California governor, whose “The Last Stand” and “Escape Plan”were box-office duds last year.

Disney’s “Captain America: The WinterSoldier,” which opens in the U.S. on Friday, dominated 32 international markets by cap-turing $75.2 million. The sequel stars ChrisEvans as the patriotic Marvel super-soldier.

Some things do change.

PROTESTING TREE REMOVAL IN PALISADES PARK

Other things don’t change. No less than four articles were written in

March and April of 1914 about protests, organized by the Santa Monica Bay Woman’sClub, of a Parks Commission decision to cutdown the palm trees in Palisades Park —then called Linda Vista Park.

City Hall wanted to modernize the parkbut the women’s group called it a “desecra-tion” of the old gardens and a waste ofmoney.

Others said the removal of the trees alongthe edge of the bluff could open up the pos-sibility of the wealthy landowners “erectingbuildings which might obscure the presentmarine view from the park seats.”

The mayor asked the protesters to with-hold judgment and made clear that the workwould go on.

HIT-AND-RUN PROBLEM? BAN PEDESTRIANS

Heres just a few of the Santa Monicaautomobile injuries reported in newspaperarchives in March and April of 1914: A manswerved to avoid a dog and flipped his car. Ahorse ran into a tandem motorcycle injuringeveryone involved. A city employee waskilled crossing the street. One driver nickeda curb, causing his car to “turn turtle.” A 14-year-old kid was severely injured after he wasstruck by a hit-and-run driver.

Instead of strengthening the speedinglaw, which “leaks like a sieve,” according tothe L.A. Times archive, City Council consid-ered banning pedestrians from crossing sev-eral streets.

“The local City Council is not prepared

to say that nursemaids ought to be arrestedfor wheeling their infant charges along thespeedway,” an L.A. Times article said. “Butthe city fathers took the position today thatthere is plenty of room on the ocean frontand other streets without running risk ofinjury or even death.”

YE OLDE CRIME WATCH (AND FIREARM FAIL-URES)

• P.J. Ostergaurd, a rancher who thoughthe had a chicken thief in the sights of hisshotgun, fired off several rounds of birdshotseverely wounding what turned out to be hisson Elmer. A surgeon fixed young Elmer —who’d been returning home from a party —and noted that his life was saved by hisfather’s choice to use light rather than heavybirdshot.

• Police found eight sticks of dynamite, percussion caps, and a fuse underneath thePacific Electric station. The cops believe thatElmer Simmons (no relations to the not-chicken-thief Elmer), a 17-year-old who fledto Mexico, planted the explosives. Simmonswas also believed to be behind a dynamitedetonation on an abandoned property a fewweeks prior. The motive for stealing thedynamite was surmised to be “boyish brava-do” with the intent to explode it “just forfun.”

• Cops cracked down on a street gang of8- to 14-year-old “hoodlums” who terror-ized local merchants, stealing bikes and carparts.

• Sergius Apraxin, a wealthy Austriancount, passed a fake check in the city by thesea. Cops didn’t care about his royal bloodand locked him in the city jail.

Part of the problem with the potentialdamage is that the fault runs near so manyvulnerable older buildings, many made ofconcrete, in downtown Los Angeles andHollywood. And because the fault, discov-ered in 1999, is horizontal, heavy rever-berations are likely to be felt over a widearea.

The shaking from a 7.5 quake in the cen-ter of urban Los Angeles could be so intenseit would lift heavy objects in the air, like the1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in NorthernCalifornia, where the shaking was so bad “wefound an upside-down grand piano,” USGSseismologist Lucy Jones told the Los AngelesTimes.

That would “hit all of downtown,” Jonessaid. “And everywhere from La Habra toHollywood.”

About 150 aftershocks, including one ofmagnitude-4.1, were felt since Friday night’s

quake, which forced several dozen people inthe Orange County city of Fullerton out oftheir homes after firefighters discoveredfoundation problems that made the build-ings unsafe to enter, authorities said.

Fire crews red-tagged 20 apartment unitsafter finding a major foundation crack, butresidents have since been allowed to return.Structural woes, including broken chimneys, were uncovered in half a dozen single-fami-ly houses, which were also deemed unsafe tooccupy until building inspectors clear thestructures. About two dozen residentsremained displaced, down from more than80 after the initial quake.

Another 14 residential structures aroundthe city suffered lesser damage, includingcollapsed fireplaces.

A water-main break flooded severalfloors of Brea City Hall, and the shakingknocked down computers and ceiling tiles,Stokes said.

It was not immediately clear if City Hallwould reopen Monday. An e-mail to themayor was not immediately returned.

ly helped his velocity.“Hopefully this year I can hit 95 mph and

stay up there consistently,” Greene said.Living in Santa Monica has allowed

Greene to work on strength and condition-ing in unique ways. Anything that involvesthe beach is good for the young pitcher.

“I go to the [gymnastic] rings about everyother day as my upper body workout,”Greene said. “It’s great for my shoulders. I docore exercises down there as well. Surfing isone of my biggest pastime workouts becausepaddling is good resistance, kind of likethrowing.”

Greene comes into extended spring train-ing getting his preseason work in preparingfor the minor league’s short season levels. There’s the rookie level Gulf Coast Leagueand application league as well as the shortseason single-A Northwest League. Ideally,Greene will be assigned to the Blue Jays’Vancouver Canadians so he can play in a bigcity.

The path to the Blue Jays takes Greene totheir minor league headquarters in Floridaboth in the GCL and advance-A FloridaState League, as well as Buffalo for Triple-A,a city that supports an NFL team and anNHL team.

Greene comes into the 2014 season fullyaware of how precise he needs to be with hispitches in the minor leagues. He went from a1.63 ERA in high school to a 5.28 ERA inrookie ball, all in the same year.

“That’s really the difference between highschool and pro ball,” Greene said. “If youleave the ball up, where you don’t want to,it’s going to be hit. In high school, they’llprobably still miss it because you’re throw-ing 90 mph and they can’t hit that.”

It’s only a matter of time until Greenebreaks into the big leagues as either a starteror reliever. The Blue Jays have traded nearlyall of their top pitching prospects either to

get Jose Reyes or R.A. Dickey. So maybeGreene could end up making his MLB debutsomewhere else.

As for off the field stardom, Greene hasthe connections and the outer tangiblesneeded to succeed in entertainment. He hasbeen a model since his early childhood andcontinues to dabble in it.

“Modeling, for me, compared to when Iwas young, is now I can drive to castings andmy jawline and body are becoming maturedand more manly rather then childlike,”Greene said. “So as I’m growing older, it’shelping.”

That being said, Greene believes that it’sharder to make it in Major League Baseballthan in modeling.

“Pro male models have a look that whatthe agency is trying to create,” Greene said.“They won’t choose you if you don’t havethat look. You can get better at baseball.”

Greene also has a key friend in the actingbusiness in Charlie Sheen, who also playedbaseball at Samohi.

“Charlie really loves baseball,” Greenesaid. “So he appreciates what we’re goingthrough and trying to make it in the game.”

For Greene, Sheen is a great ally to have. He’s a diehard Cincinnati Reds fan since thedays of the “Big Red Machine” in the 1970sand has stared in some of the biggest base-ball movies such as “Eight Men Out” and“Major League.” He currently has a sitcomcalled “Anger Management,” which Greenewill make an appearance in on May 1, 2014.

“You should see him take batting prac-tice,” Greene said. “If he took batting prac-tice at Dodger Stadium, he can hit it out.”

Greene says that even with the connec-tions and avenues in entertainment, his toppriority is to play professional baseball.

“Not only is Conner Greene a great tal-ent, he’s also a good kid,” Sheen said. “Thereis no doubt in my mind that we will be see-ing up on the mound in the MLB in the nearfuture.”
