Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department is cur- rently trapping for mosquitoes in Chase and Red Willow counties. “We had negative results for West Nile virus from our trappings but are con- cerned that mosquito numbers seem to be increasing,” explains Melissa Propp, Surveillance Nurse. “Most people who contract West Nile virus don’t get sick but those who do can be severely ill.” Typical symptoms include fever, headache, body aches and rash, in severe cases WNV can invade the brain and spinal cord leading to stiff neck, confusion, paraly- sis, coma and even death. Propp offered the following tips to prevent mosquito bites: Limit time outside from dusk till midnight when Culex mos- quitoes, the primary carrier of WNV in Nebraska, are most ac- tive. Wear pants and long-sleeves in the evening. Repair all holes in screens. Get rid of standing water that gives mosquitoes a place to breed. Be sure to use insect repellent with DEET and repeat every four (4) hours. More information on West Nile Virus may be found at our web site www.swhealth.ne.gov or by calling the McCook office at 308-345- 4223. 4TH OF JULY TRAVEL AAA forecasts more Americans will travel this Independence Day than ever before. A record-breaking 44.2 million Americans will take to the nation’s roads, skies, rails and waterways; an increase of 1.3 million Americans from last year’s holiday. “This Independence Day will be his- toric,” said Vicky Evans, Assistant Vice President, Travel Sales Develop- ment, AAA - The Auto Club Group. “Traveler numbers are up and prices are down, adding to what has already been a bustling summer travel season. The biggest factors driving growth are low gas prices, strong employment, rising incomes, and higher consumer confidence; but overall Americans just love to travel, and want to do something fun for this mid- summer tradition.” The Independence Day holiday travel period is de- fined as Friday, June 30 to Tuesday, July 4. Independence Day is usually the most-traveled of the “big 3” summer holidays. While Memorial and Labor Day holidays often attract a similar number of total travelers, In- dependence Day commonly attracts 12-13 percent more. TAX REFORM A MAJOR ISSUE A Nebraska Congressman is encouraged that House Speaker Paul Ryan has made tax reform a major issue for Congress. Congressman Adrian Smith sees tax reform as a key to boosting a sluggish economic recovery. “That is creating more opportunity rather than just kind of limping along,” Smith tells Nebraska reporters during a conference call. “It might be a fairly positive number, but we can do so much better with economic growth. I think the best thing we can do is to do that through tax reform.” Smith is encouraged Speaker Ryan has made it a priority. Ryan outlined his broad goals for tax reform during a speech earlier this week before the National Association of Manufacturers. Ryan is pushing for changes that eliminates brackets and flattens the federal income tax code, both for individuals and business. Ryan also has indicated he wants the changes to be permanent, not temporary, to provide stability for families and businesses to plan ahead. Smith favors permanence as well, but says obstacles stand in the way. What obstacles? “I think obstacles to a per- manent fix are just some of the gridlock in Washington,” Smith says. with a bar code was scanned for the first time. The product was

Juicy Fruit gum.

SPORTS

Left-hander Francisco Liriano won the 100th game of his career,

and the Blue Jays scored five runs in the sixth inning to beat

the Royals, 8-2, on Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

Liriano limited a Royals club that had won 11 of its last 13

games to two runs over six innings as he recorded his third

quality start of the season. Toronto's offense supported his

start, collecting 11 hits and seven walks to build a sizeable

lead. The Blue Jays' win snapped a three-game skid and pre-

vented a sweep. Francisco Liriano gives up two runs on six hits,

while striking out two and walking one against the Royals.

Royals right-hander Jason Hammel threw 105 pitches over five

innings. He held the Blue Jays scoreless until Jose Bautista hit a

two-run home run that tied the game in the fifth inning. The

Royals kick off a three-game series at Detroit tomorrow night.

Florida has yet to play a game decided by one run at the Col-

lege World Series this year. Kind of figures. After losing five

straight one-run games at previous CWS trips -- last year to

Texas Tech and eventual national champion Coastal Carolina

and a pair in 2015 to champ Virginia -- Florida coach Kevin

O'Sullivan set about building a team that could thrive in tight

spots. The Gators are 18-7 in one-run games this year as they

enter the CWS finals on Monday night (7 ET, ESPN) against LSU.

So how do you coach a team to win like that? "It comes down to

two things," O'Sullivan said last week as Florida rolled to three

wins in four games, earning a spot in the best-of-three finals

with a 3-0 win over TCU on Saturday night. "Throw strikes and

play better defense.
