Most people agree that chocolate is delicious but where does chocolate come from? Did you
know that it takes two to four days to make a chocolate bar and cacao beans were once so
valuable that they were used as currency. Ready to find out more about this favourite
sweet treat?
The Big Question
Do all children love chocolate?
Select one or more activity from the menu below :
Have a look at the storyboard and watch the links about how chocolate is made. Then imagine you are a cocoa bean. Describe your journey in any way that you would like.

These children think so differently about chocolate.
Do you remember melting chocolate in science? Try
melting a bar of chocolate (you will need an adult to
help you) and change its shape into something else.
Try pouring the melted chocolate to make a picture
or a sculpture.
After cooling, and the liquid chocolate has changed
back into a solid, you can eat it!
You could send in some pictures of your brownies to

I also have to carry the sacks full of
cocoa beans (weighing 30kg) to
the waiting lorries. I have no idea
what happens to the beans once
they leave on the lorries. I do this
everyday.
Hi, I’m Jean. I cannot go to school as I have
to start work on the cocoa farm at 8am. I
must cut down the cocoa fruit and remove
the beans. I do this everyday until it gets
too dark. I must work so that my family can
eat.
