A View FROM THE TOP.

Ag Day Changes this Year Owing to the spread of mycoplasma-bovis in some farms across the country, including the Waikato, the Ag Day Committee has decided to suspend the inclusion of calves at our school Ag Day this year. This decision was not taken lightly and consideration was given to the many factors, viewpoints and implications this has. The Board of Trustees and Management at the school wholly supports this decision which is precautionary, proportionate and for 2018 only. We will review this for 2019. The remainder of the Ag-Day programme will go ahead as normal. School Zone Changes on 23 July As you will be aware, our school zone is changing on 23 July – details can be found on our school web-site. If you have any questions or concerns around this change please contact Raewyn in the school office so that we can clarify things for you. Please let us know of any children you intend to enrol at our school over the next couple of years if you have not already done so. This helps us greatly when planning classroom composition. A Reminder of the Upcoming Teacher’s Union Meeting on 25 June The NZEI Primary Teachers’ Union Meeting (PUM) is being held on Monday 25 June at Claudelands. The meeting is for teach-ers throughout Hamilton and the wider Waikato to consider the terms of the collective agreement/pay settlement and re-sourcing of the education sector, currently being negotiated with the Ministry of Education. Our school will remain open for supervision, however we ask that as many of our families as possible pick up their children at 12:30pm so that the maximum number of teachers possible can attend the PUM. For our families registered for after school care with YMCA we are able to confirm that supervision will begin at 1:30pm at no additional cost to families. Thank you in anticipation of your assistance with this. Teaching Team Changes Mrs Nicole Jones will be assuming the leadership role in Tima Tahi from early Term 3 when Miss Waikari goes on maternity leave. Room 14 will be taught by Mrs Bridget McLaughlin to the end of 2018. What Is Fortnite?

Simply the most popular video game around at the moment. It is a free-to-play online video game for up to 100 partici-pants. Children (and many adults) love it. Why might this be proving a problem? The game is highly addictive, with many features being built in to make it very attractive to play. Some of our families have been asking us what is a ‘reasonable’ amount of time to spend playing the game. That is impossible to answer. As with any use of digital devices or phones please remember that parents and carers are the ‘adults’. It is perfectly reasonable to restrict play to a sensible number of hours for your own family circumstances. By the same to-ken we encourage parents to check browser histories, social media accounts and if all else fails just switch off the wi-fi. Your children may not like it but please remember that you are the adults! Children developing ‘square eyes’ will be advised accordingly! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortnite_Battle_Royale Steve Dunsmore Principal

A note to those students who have signed up for ICAS exams this year: The sitting dates are listed below. If you are absent on one of these days, I try and let you do a catch-up test on another day. It does need to be within a couple of days as I have to post the test papers back to Australia to be marked. English Tues 31 July Maths Tues 14 August These dates are also on the school website http://www.horshamdowns.school.nz/ under Calendar of Events. Thanks, Mrs Poultney

Along with the winter weather has come the mud! We try to keep our fields open as much as possible to give our students a chance to have a run round at break times. However, accidents occasional-ly happen and we recommend that students have a change of clothes in their bags—even older students!!
