    Monash South Arica is part o a

    multi-disciplinary water research

    project through the InternationalWaterCentre (IWC) with the

    Universities o Namibia, KwaZulu-

    Natal, Copperbelt, Zambia in

    Arica and the University o Montana,

    USA. The project investigates the

    governance and leadership issues

    around how water resources can

    be shared in a way that meets the

    needs o the community and the

    environment.

    Stopping the spread o disease

    Proessor Georey Setswe, Heado the School o Health Sciences, is

    assisting the South Arican National

    AIDS Council to translate HIV

    research evidence into policies and

    programmes to ght the HIV/AIDS

    epidemic. He also is co-leader on

    two other research projects: One

    looks at actors that put provincial

    government employees at risk o

    HIV inection. The other, unded by

    the Monash-Oxam Initiative, is to

    encourage participation in the new

    National Health Insurance system

    set to be introduced in South Aricarom 2012.

    Lie at MonashSouth Arica covers an area o over

    1 200 000 sq kilometres (over 400 000 sq

    It is said to oer one o the worlds best cli-

    mates: summer days are warm and wind-ree

    The city o Johannesburg

    South Aricas largest and most vibrant city,

    Johannesburg, was ounded in 1886 and

    granted city status in 1928. It was named

    ater Johan Rissik, the Surveyor General

    sent to select a site or the mining village,

    and Johannes Joubert, the Mining Commis-

    sioner sent to investigate gold claims on the

    Witwatersrand (meaning white waters ridge).

    Since the discovery o gold, Johannesburg

    has become the ocal point o all economic

    activity in the country.

    Being the gateway to Arica, Johannesburg

    boasts an abundance o proessional andmanagerial talent. Its close proximity to mar-

    kets, energy sources, transportation networks

    and a sound commercial and nancial inra-

    structure makes it the primary centre o the

    national economy. Still, Johannesburg is as

    much a city o trees as it is a city o business,

    sport and culture.

    There is easy and immediate access to many

    o the countrys major tourist attractions such

    as the Kruger National Park, private gamereserves and Sun City.

    Johannesburg oers visitors a varied

    selection o recreational activities ranging

    rom walking trails, lakes, the Zoo, Botanical

    Gardens, the historically signicant Aricana

    Museum, some 20 theatres and a tremen-

    dous variety o ethnic restaurants.

    Johannesburg is the shopping mecca o

    Arica with at least 14 large shopping malls

    eaturing elegant restaurants and ast ood

    outlets, cinemas, department stores and chic

    boutiques, art galleries, bookstores, beautysalons and a wide selection o jewellery and

    arteacts. There are also a large number o

    markets where one can come into contact

    with the vibrancy, heritage and traditions o

    the many South Arican cultures in this truly

    rainbow nation.

    Lie at MonashEnjoy an attractive and secure study environment

    Campus acilities and services

    The attractive Monash South Arica campus is

    situated on a 100-hectare site 25 kilometres

    north-west o central Johannesburg, at

    144 Peter Rd (near Hendrik Potgieter Road

    and Beyers Naud Drive) in Ruimsig.

    There is 24-hour security on campus with

    regular security patrols. Students living on

    campus have swipe-card entry to their ully-

    managed residence accommodation.

    Since Monash South Arica was established

    in 2001 our acilities have grown and

    expanded. Our impressive state-o-the-art

    teaching acilities include high-tech lecture

    theatres and tutorial rooms, a library with

    access to the ully digitised Monash periodical

    and serials collection, computer labs with

    cutting-edge PCs, a student association

    oce, a bookshop and a bistro.

    Our largest lecture theatre seats 350 students

    in comort, and small tutorial groups ensure

    personalised teaching.

    All lecture theatres and tutorial rooms are

    equipped with high-quality technology to

    enable multimedia teaching.

    Sports acilities

    Students can take advantage o our

    on-campus sports acilities which include

    two basketball/netball/volleyball courts and a

    playing eld large enough to accommodate

    soccer. Arrangements are also in place or

    students to use other sporting acilities such

    as the sport elds and tennis courts at a

    private school next to the campus and gol

    acilities at the nearby Roodepoort country

    club and numerous driving ranges.

    The campus is less than a kilometre rom

    the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium and there

    are also gymnasiums and equestrian, scuba

    diving, martial arts and sporting clubs in the

    area.

    A permanent sports coordinator, a sports

    ocer and a gymnasium supervisor at

    Monash South Arica ocus on the continued

    development o sports and sports acilities on

    the campus.

    Monash students currently participate

    competitively in soccer, basketball, table

    tennis, netball, action netball, action cricket,

    cricket, rugby, volleyball, chess and indoor

    soccer. Leisure sports include badminton,

    Students are encouraged to establish new

    clubs and have recently ormed a pool club

    Shopping

    There are several shopping complexes in

    easy reach o Monash South Arica. These

    include the upmarket Clearwater Mall about

    ve kilometres rom the campus. It houses

    all the major department stores, boutiques,

    speciality shops, cinemas and restaurants.

    Northgate Mall is about 10 kilometres rom

    the campus and oers similar amenities.

    There are several smaller shopping

    complexes less than ve kilometres rom

    campus, or example the Featherbrookshopping complex which is less than a

    kilometre away. Caes, restaurants, a variety

    o shops, banking acilities, a supermarket

    and a pharmacy are all available here.

    Transport

    Most students walk to the nearby shops or

    share a taxi to one o ve major shopping

    malls and extensive sporting/leisure acilities

    in the area.

    A Monash shuttle bus service is available totake residence students to the Clearwater

    and Northgate Malls and to specied o-

    campus accommodation venues.

    Student Association

    The Monash South Arica Student

    Association provides a platorm or student

    representation.

    The democratically-elected association also

    ocuses on developing social activities on

    campus and acilitating the introductionand management o clubs and societies. It

    is committed to eective, accountable and

    transparent student leadership.

    Student accommodation

    On-campus accommodation

    Quality o student lie is a priority at Monash

    South Arica. Our on-campus student

    accommodation combines attractive, modernarchitectural design with a sae and secure

    living environment. Available to enrolled

    students only, Monash accommodation oers

    easy access to campus acilities.

    Our accommodation provides a high-quality

    Accommodation ees or 2012 range rom

    Fully managed o-campus

    accommodation

    There is additional secure o-campus

    accommodation which is ully managed by

    Monash South Arica. Known as Honey Park

    it consists o three attractive 2-bedroom

    apartment complexes, situated approximately

    ve kilometres rom the campus. Transport to

    For South Arican citizens, a minimum o

    Visa requirements

    Students rom outside South Arica will be

    responsible or obtaining their own visa.

    Once applicants have a ull oer or a

    programme and a minimum o 80% o the

    rst semester ees have been paid in ull,and proo o payment has been received by

    Monash South Arica, you must complete

    the Request or a Conrmation o Enrolment

    (COE) Form in order to receive a written COE

    letter. Students must have this COE letter in

    order to apply or a study permit.

    Prior to leaving your home country, students

    must obtain a study permit (endorsed with

    a practical training permit) rom the nearest

    South Arican High Commission, Embassy,

    Consulate or Trade Commission.

    The South Arican study permit allows orstudents to work or up to 20 hours per week

    during term time and to work ull-time during

    semester breaks. Study permits are issued or

    the duration o your programme. A reundable

    cash deposit/bank guarantee or repatriation

    purposes is payable to the South Arican High

    Commission.

    Allow six to eight weeks or applications to be

    processed (not including postage).

    A visitors visa cannot be converted

    Scholarships

    Monash South Arica scholarships are

    awarded on the basis o academic merit

    and are available to South Arican and

    international students. Only students who

    are school-leavers (Grade 12 or equivalent

    in the year o application) and who achieve

    a minimum o a distinction aggregate (all A

    symbols) will be considered or a Monash

    South Arica scholarship.

    The scholarships are valued at 25 - 100

    percent o the annual programme tuition

    ee and are available or ull-time study only.

    Scholarships do not cover other costs such

    as accommodation, travel and textbooks.

    To be eligible or a scholarship you must rst

    Scholarships are renewable each year,

    Monash South Arica Foundation Programme

    The MSAFP is accepted as a 1 + 3 year,

    or our-year extended degree model.For example, students whose scores meet

    the entry requirements, enter directly into

    mainstream study in undergraduate degrees

    or 3-year model.

    Those applicants whose scores do not

    meet the requirements or direct entry into

    a degree, may be eligible to enter into the

    Foundation Programme.

    The demands o the Foundation Programme

    prepare students or the pace and depth

    o undergraduate study. On successul

    completion o all units, students may gainadmission to one o the undergraduate

    degrees on oer at Monash South Arica, or

    into an equivalent undergraduate degree at

    Monash University, Australia.

    Pathway options

    Students undertaking the MSAFP will

    choose to ollow a Social Science, Business

    The economics major equips students

    Monash University candidates should

    normally have obtained a weighted minimum

    average (WAM) o 65 percent over year

    rom other universities should normally have

    main subjects o the discipline area.

    Applicants should also have successully

    completed a university Mathematics or

    Science (Accounting) will be equipped to

    A graduate with a Chartered Accountant in

    South Arica (CA (SA)) qualication usually

    builds a career as an accountant or auditor

    (external or internal) or as a consultant in

    private practice, in commerce and industry,

    in the academic environment or in

    government.

    Areas o specialism include nance and

    costing, taxation, computer auditing, orensic

    auditing, international accounting and many

    others. In South Arica, a Chartered Certied

    Accountant or Certied Management

    Accountant can build a similar career, but notas an external auditor.

    Health SciencesThe Bachelor o Public Health (BPH) is a multidisciplinary,fexible degree that provides students with the opportunityto learn key principles in public health and health

    programmes and policy, leading to a wide range o careers.

    It also provides a pathway to postgraduate clinicalprogrammes (or example medicine, social work, nursingand allied health) as well as to honours and post-graduatestudies in public health.

    The Bachelor o Public Health oered by

    Monash South Arica is the equivalent o theBachelor o Health Science (BHSc) oered

    at Monash Universitys Cauleld campus in

    Melbourne, Australia. It has a globally-relevant

    curriculum with contextual variation specic

    to Monash South Arica.

    The BPH refects demands or the public

    health workorce in South Arica, Arica and

    internationally. It is a unique programme

    in that it has a global orientation, while

    capitalising on the educational opportunities

    provided by its international campuses.
