After I completed my Diploma of Nursing, I joined Monash University in 2014, entering into the second year of the Bachelor of Nursing which I completed in 2015, followed by my Honours in Nursing in 2016. I really enjoyed the collegiality, peer-to-peer teaching programs, staff support and the beautiful campus grounds. In 2018, I decided to continue my graduate path enrolling in emergency nursing. I am so lucky to work with outstanding lecturers and study clinically relevant content. This year I am planning to complete my Masters. After six years studying various courses at Monash Nursing and Midwifery, I really feel my journey through nursing with Monash, especially my graduate studies, has been more than gaining a degree; I have learnt professionalism, community spirit, leadership, and most importantly I have learnt what I am capable of. Monash taught me to question, to challenge knowledge, and to get involved.”HOLLIE JAGGARDRegistered Nurse and Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing Student

OUR RESEARCH LEADS THE CHANGE IN NURSING, MIDWIFERY AND HEALTHCARE PRACTICEAs a nurse or midwife, you’re in a discipline that continually develops and evolves. Clinical research is essential in this development, finding new ways of managing people’s health and improving patient care. And you’ll act as the patients’ advocates, ensuring their safety and protection.

Research will help you to improve patient care and find best practices that are effective. It allows you to be responsive to changes in healthcare, regulations and patient populations. As discoveries are made, your practice will change and develop, always ensuring your patients are getting the best evidence-based practices.

Understanding research outcomes empowers you to use these discoveries to make meaningful clinical and care decisions. Your work is based on the results of research.

It is vital you understand, evaluate and use research to advance your profession and your career, to stay updated and ultimately offer better patient care.

MONASH NURSING AND MIDWIFERY RESEARCH FOCUS At Monash Nursing and Midwifery (MNM), our focus is on clinical, education and health services research that addresses healthcare across the lifespan. Our collaborative connections with multiple health services allow for early implementation of healthcare innovations and help to ensure evidence-based practice.

Our areas of research excellence cover:

Innovations in Healthcare and WorkforceThis includes workforce research, such as the well-being of nursing and midwife professionals and students, workforce education – highlights for us have been our simulation, MaskEd and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) research.

Prevention and Management of Acute and Chronic ConditionsWe study the prevention and management of acute and chronic conditions, such as wound management in hospitals and aged care facilities, women’s health and cardiovascular disease, cancer care in public and private hospital settings, emergency nursing, trauma, mental health and drug safety.

Ageing and End of Life CareOur expertise in this area is highlighted with the joint appointment at Eastern Health of Professor Claire Johnson, Vivian Bullwinkel Chair in Palliative care, and her work with Emeritus Professor Margaret O’Connor on Voluntary Assisted Dying research.

Translation to PracticeFor us ‘translation to practice’ is essential for the benefit of our patients and we strive towards this in our research, focusing on areas like, infection control in hospitals and clinics, wound management and aged care.

Our education and research sees us rank highly as one of Australia’s leading nursing schools. Ranked 17th globally for nursing in the 2019 QS World University Rankings, with a current ERA ranking of 4 (above world standard) and a 2018 rank of 32 globally for nursing in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Research at Monash Nursing and Midwifery is leading change and we invite you to join us.

For me personally, living in the NT, remote study has meant that I have had the ability to study the Master of Advanced Clinical Nursing and to access quality education without having to incur very expensive travel costs or heavily disrupt my working life. I am a firm believer that further education should not just be a privilege for city dwellers and that people living in rural and remote Australia should also be able to access well trained health care practitioners. The remote approach to study is helping me to support this very personal goal.

The course is very well designed and the use of technology, such as on-line collaboration tools and discussion boards meant that I still felt like a part of a group whilst my lecturers have been easy to access. As a result, interactions are more personal, and the impact of not having fellow students to meet face to face with to discuss assignments and the material covered in lectures is limited.

Studying through Monash was very much about undertaking graduate study with an educational institution that has a proven track record for success and a well-regarded reputation. Although I undertook my undergraduate studies at another institution, I was always very impressed by the quality of nurses I met who had been trained at Monash University. This, combined with a course that appeared to have the flexibility, breadth and depth of study I felt would make me a better practitioner and ultimately benefit my patients meant that there was no question about where I would be undertaking my graduate studies.”

I was a successful banking professional; when I had my children, their births had a profound effect on me and I decided to make a dramatic career change and become a midwife. I completed the doula (birth companion) training and followed this with a midwifery degree at Monash. I found the lecturers, staff and placement structure to be supportive and family-friendly.

As a registered midwife in a public hospital and a qualified childbirth educator, my driving force is to educate and encourage women and their support team to view the birth of their baby as normal.

I am dedicated to improving my profession, so decided to do further study with a graduate degree in midwifery: I didn’t have a second thought as to where I wanted to complete this, but Monash. During the course, I really appreciated being able to directly relate my studies to my current place of employment.

My long-term plan is to work towards a role which enables me to participate in the overall future of midwifery. I hope to mentor student midwives, and publish research that will improve outcomes and experiences for childbearing women.”

OUR GRADUATE RESEARCH Improving medication adherence in kidney transplantation: an intervention research Jac Kee Low “Coming from a Bachelor of Science background, with no experience in conducting human research, I was anxious and uncertain at the start of my PhD. However, that didn’t last long as my supervisors constantly provided me with guidance and reassurance - They have supported me every step of the way and their unwavering faith in me never ceases to amaze me!

I have had so many opportunities to hone my research and presentation skills, all of which are critical to help me achieve my future goals. Undertaking my PhD at Monash University has been a wonderful journey for me!”

Specialist nurses’ contribution to the care of women with gynaecological cancer: a mixed methods study Olivia Cook “Having had a wonderful experience in my undergraduate nursing degree at Monash University, I returned to Monash with more than 10 years clinical experience in order to conduct much needed research into my clinical field, gynaecological oncology. Having studied at other institutions in that time, coming back to Monash was like coming home. It was the place where my passion for nursing was first sparked and I was impressed to see how Monash remains at the forefront of nursing and midwifery education and research. Monash has offered me an extremely supportive environment in which to pursue my research goals. My supervision team not only share their extensive research and clinical experience, but also offer great wisdom and support as I balance my family, work and study commitments.”

Exploring disaster nursing core competencies and roles in Saudi Arabia Abdulellah Al Thobaity “My experience at Monash Nursing and Midwifery has been one of the best and most rewarding times of my life. These experiences included learning from outstanding supervisors who are experts in different types of research methodologies and who provide endless help and support for international students. Also, Monash provided us research students with a series of training courses covering research essentials: how to make publications, and the essential skills for communication and disseminations and more about different training courses, such as doing research with high integrity. Overall, it was a really great experience, and I will take all the experiences that I gained from Monash University and put them into practice in my professional context in Saudi Arabia.”

The support and education needs of substitute decision makers for people with dementia at end of life: A qualitative interpretive description Sarah Cresp “Embarking on my unique journey in the undergraduate nursing degree at Monash University began at the age of sixteen - I was the youngest student in Monash Nursing and Midwifery’s history! I was residing on the Mornington Peninsula, so tertiary education needed to be within close proximity, and provide exceptional teaching leading to an influential and successful career - all of which Monash University has ticked!

Having studied at another university, I noticed Monash University was making cutting edge research and education innovations in nursing and midwifery. So, I returned to Monash University with 10 years of clinical experience to conduct much needed human research in aged care.

Monash has provided a conducive environment for pursing my higher education and research goals. My supervision team possess a vast range of clinical and research expertise, who are continuously present to share their wisdom and offer support in flexible arrangements to balance my family, study, and work commitments.

Now I am honoured to give back to Monash University in my role as a teaching associate, enabling undergraduate students to achieve their full potential in an influential and successful career in nursing!”

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR SUSAN LEE Director, Research Degrees

“I am a registered nurse with extensive experience in the design and teaching of programs, particularly in the development of research activities and palliative care. I have supervised many research students in a range of studies related to decision-making and end of life care. I am interested in education related to professional issues in nursing, interdisciplinary learning, research, ethics, cancer and palliative care.

My colleagues are accredited supervisors, supporting vibrant research groups undertaking a broad range of studies related to nursing and midwifery, education, interdisciplinary practices and health service delivery. Having spent the last 14 years working in emergency and critical care nursing, I have always had a passion for improving the quality of nursing practise and raising the profile of nurses.

I choose to start my PhD journey at Monash after receiving a scholarship from Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP). Since starting my Doctor of Philosophy, I have had a keen interest in exploring how emergency nurses in Indonesia sustain themselves and provide effective care. Not only have I been able to gain international study experience, but I have also developed a deeper understanding for advanced research methods and been able to hone my critical analysis skills.

Monash has provided me with more than just your ordinary study experience. My fellow students and I have access to great facilities, the latest resources and caring supervisors who are experts in their field. I also have the opportunity to take up professional development workshops that are tailored to my interests and needs. As exciting as research is, it can also be very demanding. The student associations are a great way to take a break, meet new friends, and unwind (before going back to study).

Being part of the Monash community, I have been fortunate enough to publish my articles in international journals as well as present at international conferences. It’s been a great experience to meet other PhD students from an array of cultures.

Following completion, my goal is to be a professor in nursing. I would like to teach as well as continuing to carry out world-class research that will bring about positive change to nursing practice.”
