Our friend Jean-Paul Meyer has decided to take a little pause from his job of editor of our bulletin. At the moment when we start this 5th Cavendish in Monaco, a lot of thoughts for him and a lot of thanks for the great job he did during the three last editions (best thoughts too to another friend, Marco Catellani, who was the editor the first year). Jean-Charles Allavena : “A fabulous tournament!”

The previous president of the Monégasque Bridge Federation is particularly enthusiastic about hosting the 5th Cavendish Tournament in the Principality.

He says “It’s the only tournament of its type in the world”. The idea began when Pierre Zimmerman moved to Monaco to create his team which has since won most of the world bridge titles. He also wanted to create, with Monaco, various international bridge events. First of all, the Prince Albert Cup in 2011 and then the desire to organise a pairs invitation tournament similar to the Cavendish. “Take over the Cavendish” said Roy Welland, a member of the Las Vegas Board, and he was quickly seconded by Bob Hamman. The tournament was losing its attraction in Las Vegas. In 2012 the first European Cavendish took place in Monaco. (continues on page 2)

Monaco, 14th-19th February 2017

Five years on, did you make the right choice?Jean-Charles Allavena : Without a doubt! In 2012

we had a huge tournout with the auction rising to about 800.000 Euros. So much so, that the Americans decided to stop holding it in Las Vegas.

I would have preferred to organise it one year in Europe then one in America, as we don't have many Americans living over here. I haven't given the idea up, maybe New York would be a possibility.

A Cavendish at Monaco has put the Principality on the world bridge map.

Henceforth Monaco exists in the bridge world. Before, we organised the International Patton. We

have also hosted the European Championships and the Bermuda Bowl. Today, Monaco is synonymous with world bridge events.

The best teams in the world have been here and this year they are here again. We have proved our ability to organise the tournament and welcome our guests.

In commercial terms – and this is a member of the government talking – the Cavendish represents 500 hotel nights, about the same as a business congress. We have put Monaco on the map, raised revenues for the Principality...Done our job for the Federation.

How do you feel about the 2017 Cavendish?

It's going to be great! We have 22 top-class teams who will play

a structured tournament over three days with a semi-final and final. There are 65 pairs who will play Friday, Saturday and Sunday: it's the best turnout yet.

What's more, and even more encouraging, the same people are coming back year after year.

Any regrets?Yes – not having been able to include a

Ladies event this year. Until now we have had 16 pairs, then 20 then 26. This year there were too few entrants, due mainly to other events taking place at the same time. We have decided to invite those who had already entered to play in the open pairs event, for the same fee as the ladies' event.

The Cavendish will take place on alternate years.

That is so. It will alternate with the Winter Games, which we

inaugurated with Pierre Zimmerman last year. We have undertaken with the European Bridge League to hold 5 Winter Games – 3 in Monaco and almost certainly one in Geneva.

A word about the game – have the unfortunate events of the recent past had an influence on the invitations?

The pairs involved will not come back. The winners of the first Cavendish have not

returned to Monaco. We are extremely vigilant and our Tournament

Directors are mandated to verify any “dubious” results.

What's your bet for this Fifth Cavendish?Without treading on anyone's toes... Lavazza for teams; Zia Mahmood for pairs.

Monaco, 14th-19th February 2017 Cavendish V

THE SURPRISE SNELLERSby Stephane Tardy

The last edition of the Teams Cavendish was won by the Dutch team Snellers. Joris van Lankveld, Berend van den Bos, Wubbo de Boer were the team-mates of Agnes Snellers, one of the three ladies who won this great event. The route of the Dutch hasn’t been a long cool river : in the semi-final for example, they had to beat the Irish team 20-0 in order to reach the final : well, they did it !

The last effort supposed was to beat the favorites, the team Lavazza: Zia Mahmood, Dennis Bilde, Giorgio Duboin et Agustin Madala.

The result was absoutely clear: 45-28. Agustin Madala probably remembers board 26:

against 6[, Agnès Snellers decided to lead small from KJxx in Diamonds.

Dummy showed AQ for xx and AQxxx for x in Hearts: he thought that the Dutch captain hadn’t lead under her King, made the Heart finesse and went down. In the other room, 4[+ 2 was the result.

Future opponents of Agnes Snellers, be careful !

Mobile Devices PolicyWe suggest you to deposit your mobile devices at the Director’s desk. You can also bring them at the table, but in that case they must be visible and turned off.If you have particoular needs, you can keep them in quiet mode but for this you have to ask for Directors’ permission.
