Dear Parishioners, There is a lot to learn and to share from one another, parish to parish and even religion to religion. My experience from the Brisbane Assembly 2019 last weekend is that there is hope and light at the end of the tunnel. Linda de Ruyter, Frank Ford and Fr Dan will be happy to share their experience of the Assembly with you as we journey through the Plenary Council 2020. As key players in the 21 st Church in Australia, we need to be open and trust ourselves, if not “We’ll all be rooned” said Hanrahan”. The gift of one another and the stories that we carry in our personalities are a rich heritage that we should nurture and cherish. I imagined how refreshing the last long weekend would have been for you as I felt so refreshed after having a good rest on Monday. I welcome the students and staff of our schools and wish them a great term and successful end of the year. I am looking forward to celebrating excellent graduations and colourful end of school year liturgies with you. Our 2019 Alpha program has just ended. The last session was held on Wednesday and it was a wonderful experience for all of us. On your behalf, I thank all the leaders for their dedication, all the catering team for their generous services and all the participants for giving us the opportunity to do something for the growth of the kingdom of God in our parish. We are now invited to suggest how to adapt the 2020 Alpha program to the demography and dynamics of our parish. This weekend some of our children will be enrolled into the Sacramental Program for Confirmation. We welcome them and wish them awesome faith enriching sessions through the Program. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. As we approach the month of November, look out for the Memorial Book at the front of the church to write the names of those you will want us to remember and pray for in all our November Masses. A special Mass will be celebrated on Saturday 2 nd November at 11.00am in memory of all parishioners, friends and relatives who died in the last 12 months. Please contact the Parish Office for details. I wish to sincerely thank you for your generous donation to assist those who will be attending the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Perth in December 2019. If you have taken an envelope home, please feel free to drop it in the collection plate or in the office at your convenience. I invite you to join some of our parishioners and friends for a morning tea and coffee after Mass on Monday 14 th October at Chatterbox Coffee Shop, Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown. All are welcome. On 16 th and 17 th October the world will celebrate World Food Day and International Day for Eradication of Poverty respectively. I urge you to actively participate in both or any of these days. If you have pre-school children you might be interested in attending Aria Angels with them on Wednesday mornings during school term. With the aid of music and play, the children will learn about their faith in a creative way. There are more details on page 3 of the Newsletter. Fr Terry from Acacia Ridge will be away for his annual holidays from this Monday until 18th November. There will be no weekday Masses at Acacia Ridge until he returns. Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Year C

First Reading: 2 Kings 5: 14-17 Namaan the leper is healed through obeying the Prophet Elisha’s simple instructions to bathe seven times in the Jordan River.

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2: 8-13 Paul exhorts his disciple Timothy to remember the Good News about Jesus, the Good News that Jesus brought, the Good News that is Jesus himself.

Gospel: Luke 17: 11-19 The healing of the ten lepers, only one of whom came back to thank Jesus, reminds us of the importance of thanking God for all he has given and is giving us, for all he has done and is doing for us.

‘GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE’ Rejoice and Exult

66. Let us listen once more to Jesus, with all the love and respect that the Master deserves. Let us allow his words to

unsettle us, to challenge us and to demand a real change in the way we live. Otherwise, holiness will remain no more than an empty word. We turn now to the individual Beatitudes in the Gospel of Matthew (cf. Mt 5:3-12).

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” 67. The Gospel invites us to peer into the depths of our heart, to see where we find our security in life. Usually the rich feel secure in their wealth, and think that, if that wealth is threatened, the whole meaning of their earthly life can

collapse. Jesus himself tells us this in the parable of the rich fool: he speaks of a man who was sure of himself, yet foolish, for it did not dawn on him that he might die that very day (cf. Lk 12:16-21).

68. Wealth ensures nothing. Indeed, once we think we are rich, we can become so self-satisfied that we leave no room for God’s word, for the love of our brothers and sisters, or for the enjoyment of the most important things in life. In this way, we miss out on the greatest treasure of all. That is why Jesus calls blessed those who are poor in spirit, those who

have a poor heart, for there the Lord can enter with his perennial newness.

SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY Making It Real - Genuine human encounter in our digital world

Half of the world’s population is now online. Over 4.3 billion people are using the internet and 3.5 billion are social media users. Here in Australia, connectivity has also grown rapidly, with over 20 million people on the internet and 18 million using social media. The internet and social networking platforms encompass so many aspects of our lives that it is virtually impossible to imagine a world that isn’t online. Pope Francis has often spoken of the great potential for ‘genuine human encounter’ in this space: Good communication helps us to grow closer, to know one another better, and ultimately, to grow in unity ... Media can help us greatly in this, especially nowadays, when the networks of human communication have made unprecedented advances. The internet, in particular, offers immense possibilities for encounter and solidarity. This is something truly good, a gift from God. He has also warned of those elements of our digital world that are harmful – information overload; social isolation; marginalisation of the vulnerable; consumerism and fake news. Whenever communication is primarily aimed at promoting consumption or manipulating others, we are dealing with a form of violent aggression like that suffered by the man in the parable, who was beaten by the robbers and left abandoned by the side of the road ... It is not enough to be passersby on the digital highway, simply ‘connected’; connections need to grow into true encounters.
