The Readings and their Message

1 Samuel 16:1B, 6-7, 10-13A The monarchy had been tolerated by God in Israel as a lesser evil. It is now about to take a turn and this story confirms it. It is a classical doctrine that David was chosen

by the Lord. The anointing, which probably sealed a process already advanced, is placed in the context of David’s adolescence or early youth, in the first page of his story. The Lord takes the initiative. Samuel is the official executor, the people don’t count. Let us compare it with the election of Saul: the initiative is from the Israelites; it is corrupted even from its inception; and it is accepted by God as a tolerant concession. In the case of David, the Lord has accepted the monarchical principle and takes it into his own hands. In the discovery of the chosen one, the author uses the well-known literary resource of the younger brother who takes precedence over his brothers. This is very common in Hebrew folklore and seeks to teach that God doesn’t think like humans, because God does not look at external appearances. Ephesians 5:8-14 The majority of the Christian communities founded by Paul lived in the large cities of the empire where the generalized moral decadence was patent and very notorious. The most shameful perversions and vices were ruling the society; they had become normal and accepted behaviors. This was the darkness against which the apostle gives his call of alarm to the Ephesians. The world of light is opposed to the world of darkness. John 9:1-41 This gospel refers to the previous statement on the part of Jesus that He is the light of the world. Jesus contrasts the vision of the blind man to the growing blindness of those who say they can see. The story is placed in the context of the controversies between Christians and Jews in the synagogue in the gospel of John, and helps prove that Jesus is the Messiah. It also gives witness to Christ as the fulfillment of the Jewish worship. The stories give permission to the Christian community to separate themselves from the rites of the past, to embrace the new liturgy of Christ. The miracles serve as a way to legitimize and lend authority to the person of Jesus. The stories about miracles are also a means for evangelization—they lead people to faith and serve as teaching. The story of Jesus giving sight to the blind is a teaching about Jesus, the light of the world.

Tomorrow, Monday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m. a bilingual Mass for families and friends of the incarcerated will be celebrated here at St. Anthony. It will be followed by a small gathering in the St. Anthony Café.

Through prayer and sharing, we open ourselves to God’s healing for ourselves and our loved ones in prison. All are welcome to join us for this special time.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [then] I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me.” (Rev 3:20)

During the Mass, the Holy Oils are blessed and distributed to all the parishes. Another highlight of this Mass is that the priests of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles renew their vows of obedience and their commitment to serve God’s people. Las lecturas y su mensaje

1 Samuel 16:1B, 6-7, 10-13A La monarquía en Israel había sido tolerada por Dios como un mal menor. Ahora va a tomar un giro y este relato lo confirma. Es doctrina clásica que David ha sido elegido expresamente por el Señor. La unción, que

probablemente vino a sancionar un proceso ya adelantado, se coloca en la primera juventud o adolescencia de David, en la primera página de su historia. El Señor toma la iniciativa. Samuel es el ejecutor oficial, el pueblo no cuenta. Comparémosla con la elección de Saúl: es iniciativa de los israelitas; está viciada desde el comienzo; y es aceptada por Dios como concesión tolerante. En el caso de David, el Señor ha aceptado el principio monárquico y lo toma en sus propias manos. En el descubrimiento del elegido, el autor utiliza el conocido motivo del hermano menor que se antepone a sus hermanos, tan común en el folklore hebreo y que de todos modos busca enseñar que Dios no piensa igual que los hombres, porque no se fija en apariencias.

Efesios 5:8-14 La mayoría de las comunidades cristianas de Pablo vivían en las grandes ciudades del imperio, donde la decadencia moral generalizada era más patente y notoria. Las perversiones y los vicios más vergonzosos gobernaban aquella sociedad; se habían convertido en comportamientos normales y aceptados. Estas son las tinieblas contra las que el apóstol lanza su grito de alarma a los efesios. El mundo de la luz se opone al mundo de las tinieblas.

Juan 9:1-41 Este evangelio se refiere a la declaración anterior por parte de Jesús de que Él es la luz del mundo. Jesús contrasta la visión del ciego con la creciente ceguera de quienes dicen ver. El relato se sitúa en el contexto de las controversias entre los cristianos y los judíos de la sinagoga en el evangelio de Juan y sirve para probar que Jesús es el Mesías. También da testimonio de Cristo como el cumplimiento del culto judío. Las historias dan permiso a la comunidad cristiana para separarse de los rituales del pasado, para abrazar la liturgia nueva de Cristo. Los Milagros sirven como modo de legitimar y dar autoridad a la persona de Jesús. Las historias de milagros son también un medio de evangelización —llevan al pueblo a la fe y sirven como enseñanza—. La historia de Jesús que da la vista a un ciego es una enseñanza sobre Jesús, luz del mundo
