This past month, we saw many accom-plishments from the children and adults we serve. From the out-standing performance of Melmark’s Swim

Team to a spectacular production of Best of Broadway by The Melmark Players, the talents of the boys, girls, men and women who are part of the Melmark Family shined through this month, as they always do. I would like to take this opportunity to con-gratulate these individuals. The Melmark Swim Team shares exciting news in the pages of this

newsletter. Personal bests, gold, silver and bronze medals; all accomplished through hard work and dedication. This month, Melmark’s Traveling Art Show also went national, with two pieces on display in Phoenix, Arizona. We are thrilled to be part of the ACCEL Art of Autism Show, which selected pieces by Jack and Davey to display. This is a testament to these two artists’ abilities. Also this month, The Joybells held performances at schools and church-es, sharing their musical talents with others. The Melmark Players got a jump

start on their 2012 Season, with a performance at The George Crothers Memorial School, which is part of CA-DES. Audience members were amazed by the production of Best of Broadway. And the Melmark Mustangs are off to a grand slam start for the baseball season. Be sure to make it out to one of their games! While we are so proud of the chil-dren and adults we serve, I personally thank each of you, Melmark staff, for your steadfast support and dedication to children and adults with special needs. You are the light that helps them shine. For all you do to help them rise to the top, thank you. All applicants are encouraged to complete the online application at

www.melmark.org/careers. Just click on available positions and apply.

April 22 - 28 is National Severe Weather Preparedness Week. Please take this week as an opportunity to plan and practice how and where you will take shelter if severe weather such as a tornado or severe thunderstorms should occur. When a thunderstorm looms, winds can also be a significant problem. So-called “straight-line winds” can push-out ahead of a storm, forcing forward as heavy rain plunges to the surface beneath the storm cloud. The winds can be strong enough to knock down trees, branches, and drop power lines, as well as send other sorts of debris flying through the air. These serious winds can precede the arrival of the storm by several minutes or more. So, along with lightning, wind is also a good reason to get indoors as soon as you hear thunder. Getting inside ahead of the storm also gives you time to prepare. The safest place to be during a thunderstorm is on the lower floor of a building or home, away from windows and on the side of the structure opposite from the direction the storm is approaching. The upper floors of a home are more susceptible to falling trees and fly-ing debris. As a storm passes, you should stay away from windows, plumbing and electrical outlets, hard-wired phones and anything that’s plugged into the wall. if there’s a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued, it’s also a good idea to crouch along an interior wall and shield yourself from the potential of shattering glass, which is one of the more common ways people are injured when a storm damages a building. you can use a blanket or a sofa cushion for protection. of course, severe thunderstorms almost always produce those straight-line winds mentioned earlier, but can also occasionally produce a tornado. in the event of a tornado, it’s best to be in a building’s basement, again, on the east side of the room. Blankets and seat cushions are still a good idea for protection, as well as crawling un-der a table. An interior closet on a lower floor is also a decent hide-out if you don’t have time to get to the base-ment or access to a lower level. Tornadoes are not common in our area with only about a half-dozen reported per year, most of them small and short-lived. in those rare occasions when twisters do strike, it’s the more informed people who have thought the situation through ahead of time who usually avoid injury.
