The historic Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), famous for its world-class art collec-tions is making history once again. The museum will reopen in midtown Manhattanon November 20, 2004, to coincide with its seventy-fifth anniversary, after comple-
tion of an ambitious $858 million, four year renovation and expansion project. The existingfacility was in need of upgrade, expansion and important amenities to accommodate theincreasing numbers of visitors to the museum. This project will enable MoMA to achieve astronger presence in New York City and, indeed, to continue to serve as one of the nation'smost prestigious fine arts institutions. Not only will MoMA retain its traditional aestheticappeal and character, but the conserved and expanded facility will have an even greaterimportance as one of our nation's most renowned cultural attractions and historic treasures.This is the museum's largest renovation and expansion since it opened in 1929, and in sup-port of this campaign, overseers of the venerable institution enlisted the architectural expert-ise of Yoshio Taniguchi of Japan. Yoshio's reputation and award-winning projects locally andinternationally are peerless, and his work is half restoration, half new construction, and all ofit for cultural enriched institutions. Says Glenn D. Lowry, director of the museum: "In thissuperb building realized by Yoshio Taniguchi, the legacy of our founders will resonate with anew audience eager to see and learn about the best in modern and contemporary art. KeySpan’s EMDS Platform To Offer IAQ Solutions
As reported in the last issue of T.E.C. Quarterly News, KeySpan's EnergyMonitoring & Data Services (EMDS) application provides a benchmark by whichenergy efficiencies can be monitored, analyzed and compared. The technology isavailable to the utility provider's key stakeholder groups, including the public andprivate school systems in its geographic markets. Having recognized and commu-nicated to its clients the financial and environmental benefits of improving energyaccountability systems and forecasting methods, the question is now how can astrategy be developed that enables the benefits to be realized in the area of IndoorAir-Quality (IAQ). The approach that KeySpan is leaning towards is to comple-ment the EMDS model, which is predicated on the LonWorks® (LonMark™
Certified Components) Open-Systems architecture, with the ability to remedy keyIAQ management issues within this dynamic environment by facilitating the pro-curement of an incessant flow of accurate, actionable IAQ data. The company hasselected the Block Institute, a private learning institution in Brooklyn, New York,as the test site for the roll out of this new phase of the EMDS solution. T.E.C.Systems is providing professional services in the capacity of system integrator -responsible for the installation and integration of field devices and the marriage ofthe facility's network infrastructure with the EMDS platform. The pilot phase isexpected to be complete in early 2005.

Thus, the challenge toT.E.C. Systems was how to designand install a new and truly comple-mentary environmental controls sys-tem for equally modern HVACequipment that would meet temper-ature and humidity requirements forpeople as well as buildings and arti-fact preservation, while taking littleor no interior space allowing easyfuture upgrades and expansions.
The new MoMA features a centralmechanical plant serving a networkof facility equipment disseminatedthroughout the museum's associa-tion of buildings. The HVAC sys-tem is comprised of perimeter

Heating, Ventilation, and AirConditioningThe nature of the museum's collec-tions requires operation of the heat-ing, ventilation and air conditioningsystems (HVAC) as well as otherbuilding systems around the clockwithout downtime or failure.Specifically, the museum environ-ment is required to maintain a con-sistent temperature of 72 degreesFahrenheit, plus or minus twodegrees, and relative humidity of 50

NEW YORK’S AMERICANMUSEUM OF NATURALHISTORY EXPANDING ONAUTO-MATRIX BMS
T.E.C. Systems has been retained bythe American Museum of NaturalHistory to integrate new emergencypower supply (EPS) equipment withthe existing American Auto-Matrixbuilding management system(BMS). T.E.C. Systems will enablethe BMS to facilitate direct access tothe EPS equipment (Cummins gen-erator and transfer switches precon-figured with LonWorks® communi-cation cards) via a FieldServer gate-way. The integration of the dis-parate systems will allow informationfrom the generator set and transferswitches to be shared with the BMSfor monitoring purposes.

Ancillary componentsinclude four two-cell cooling towersas well as Liebert air-conditioning(AC) units. The building's chillersystem consists of three York 1000-ton centrifugal chillers with variablespeed pumps. The entire museumcampus will be heated via steamgeneration provided by Con Edison.Heating for all fan systems are fedby steam coils; The return air is anopen-plenum system located abovethe ceiling. In sum, fifty-nine airhandling units (AHU) will distrib-ute conditioned air throughout thecampus buildings. The GalleryWing will be served by thirty-five ofthe sixty AHU's, some with preheat.Units feeding directly into the exhi-bition spaces will be fed minimumoutside air from four pre-treatmentunits (PTU).
System IntegrationThe diversity of the mechanicalequipment demanded a BMS capa-ble of communicating across a mul-tiplicity of communication plat-forms, including the adaptation ofthe existing control system into thenew design. The system would haveto account for environmental moni-toring and life safety systems, pro-viding a consistent and positivemuseum experience. Post consulta-tion with the Mechanical, Electricaland Plumbing Engineer, AltieriSebor Weber, LLC, T.E.C. Systemsresolve a solution to furnish andinstall a direct digital control(DDC) system, standardized toHoneywell's EXCEL 5000®Building Management System tointegrate and regulate the centralplant HVAC equipment and othersupport systems throughout thecomplex. The EXCEL 5000® sys-tem is a core offering of Honeywell'scomprehensive building automation
technology solutions. Employing adistributive architecture, the systemprovides a powerful platform for theintegration of an indiscriminateamount of products from a diversi-fied group of vendors through a sin-gle graphical user interface (GUI)design.
The BMS provides the monitoringand control for all the mechanicaland electrical equipment within themuseum complex. This includes theair conditioning equipment; electri-cal distribution monitoring; lightingcontrol. The primary integration inthe BMS is the low level integrationof the aforementioned equipment,(including the integration of YORKChillers through a BACnet® con-nection to the BMS) for monitoringand control, however there is alsothe high level integration to the lifesafety systems in order to minimizethe danger to building occupantsand provide a means of escape. Forinstance, because the fire alarmsneeds to interfaced with HVAC con-trols to shutdown systems (to pre-vent the spread of fire) or placethem in a smoke-control or purgemode, the BMS will also integrate tothe FireComm System via aLonWorks® connection. Thisenables the BMS to have a completepicture of the 1000-plus fire/smokedampers installed to support thesmoke control and emergencyegress. In addition, the Tek-Air lab-oratory airflow control systems(serving the conservation/restorationlaboratory) are digitally interfaced tothe BMS using ModBus protocol.In sum, the BMS is depended uponfor the monitoring of some 9500points (only 20 percent of which arehard-wired). The BMS also pro-vides a common platform for allMaintenance / Operations activitiesand provides an excellent source fortrouble ticketing, trend analysis,availability reporting (Mean time toDiagnose, Mean time to Repair,etc.) spare parts management, and
routine maintenance activities.Access to the BMS is enabled viaHoneywell's highly adaptable andscalable SymmetrE™ operator inter-face architecture. SymmetrE™ isan easy to use, graphics-orientedoperator interface, designed to meetthe sophisticated comfort, monitor-ing and control needs of large,demanding facilities. At MoMA,the GUI interface provides globalcontrol, serving as a communicationlink between facility engineers andthe 60-plus local control panelsdesigned, fabricated, and installed byT.EC. Systems. The facility isequipped with a single color graphicoperator terminal, and a server toallow local capabilities at each con-trol panel.
System BenefitsThe key benefit of this high level ofintegration in the museum environ-ment is to allow operations staff tosee in a single view the impact in anemergency situation. For example ina fire situation the operator can onthe one display see the fire alarmzone, and the fire smoke dampers(zones), which are making automaticemergency adjustments. More so,this integration will allow MoMA tomaintain critical environments withno downtime and successfully han-dle miscellaneous service problems.This will also allow museum officialsto concentrate on developing exhibi-tions and educational programs,since the system virtually guaranteessmooth operation of the facility.
At completion, the new MoMA willbe a comfortable, environmentallyefficient, and ultra-modern facility.The expansion and renovation willenable the Museum of Modern Artto welcome ever larger and morediverse visitors, show multiple exhi-bitions simultaneously, hold largeevents in its public halls, and installspecialized storage for its world-renowned collections of fine anddecorative arts.
