When expectant parents are faced with choosing a name they often have a hard time deciding. Who would have thought that naming your child would be so difficult when there are so many names to choose from? Several names have been chosen based on family traditions, others for their sym- bolic meaning and some because they just liked the name. In the Greek tradition to honour earlier generations, the child’s first name is usually named after the grandmother if it’s a girl and the grandfather if it’s a boy. In some East Indian families a Priest chooses a page from their holy book indicating the first letter of the child’s name. The parents must then choose a name beginning with the chosen letter. Naming ceremonies are the most important childhood ritual of the Sri Lankan culture. This ceremony usually takes place a few months after birth when the child receives it’s first rice feed. These are only a few baby naming traditions, however what seems to be common amongst different cultures is that a great deal of importance is placed on the naming of a baby. Native Indian naming traditions vary from tribe to tribe and are often very symbolic and have reference to nature. Have you ever wondered where the name Canada originated from? The Native Indians were influential in the naming of our great coun- try. The name Canada comes from the native word “Kanata” which is the St.Lawrence Iroqouian word for “Village”, “Settlement” or “Land”. When Jaques Cartier landed on present day Quebec in 1535 he was greeted by some Native Indians who used the word “Kanata” to direct him to the village of Stadacona. Jaques Cartier then began using the word “Canada” to refer to the entire area and not just the village of Stadacona. July 1st we celebrate our “Home” & “Native” Kanata. Personal And Family Safety Protection Tips Auto Safety Tips

Crime statistics show that one vehicle is stolen every 20 seconds in North America. Stolen cars, vans, trucks, and motorcycles cost victims time and money - and increase everyone's insurance premiums. They're also often used to commit other crimes.

Basic Prevention

• Never leave your keys in the car or ignition.

• Always lock your car, even if it's in front of your home.

• Copy your license plate and vehicle identification number (VIN) on a card and keep them with your driver’s license. Keep the registration with you, not in the car.

• Keep the keys to your home and car separate.

• Never leave valuables, such as your purse or Christmas presents, in your car.

• Keep your car in good running condition. Make sure there's enough gas to get there and back.

• Avoid parking in isolated areas with little foot or auto traffic and poor lighting. Be especially alert in unstaffed lots and enclosed parking garages.

• When possible back into the parking spot so you can have a bet-ter view and make a quick getaway.

• Before you get into your car, walk around it, look in the back and check under it before getting into it.

• If you think someone is following you, drive to the nearest police or fire station, open service station or other open business to get help.

• If you are bumped by another car, drive slowly to the nearest police or fire station, open service station or other open business to get help.

• Don't pick up hitchhikers. Don't hitchhike yourself.

• If you often drive at night, or alone, consider a CB radio or cellu-lar phone to make it easier to summon help in a emergency.
