Learning objectives: Use phonological knowledge to work out, predict and check the meanings of unfamiliar words; Blend phonemes for reading; Re-enact stories in a variety of ways, e.g. through role-play; Describe story settings and incidents relating them to their own experience and those of others.

Curriculum links: Citizenship: Choices; Science: Plants and animals in the local environment

Focus phoneme: are (share)

Fast words: the, was, he, to, of, I, your, you, said, do, go, this, with, one, have, here, were, coming, is, a, we, come

Word count: 292

Getting started• Revise the focus phoneme for this book, are, on a small whiteboard along with

any phonemes that children have diffi culties with.

• Write the following words up on the small whiteboard for the children to

fast-read: mole, vole, gather, extra, empty, snug, stuck, snout. If necessary,

demonstrate blending the phonemes to read each word, then check that the

children can explain the meaning of each word.

• Read the title of the book together, blending along the words.

• Ask if the children have ever experienced moving to a new home. Briefl y

introduce the characters in this story: Vole, Rabbit, Mouse. Explain that these

animals live in holes too. Can the children predict what will happen?

• Find a photo of a vole to share with the children.

Reading and responding• Give out the books for the children to read independently.

• Listen in to individuals as they read on to p179 independently. Encourage

children to comment on what is happening to Mole and say how they think he

is feeling. Check that children are blending fl uently when sentences run over

one line.

• At the end of p179, ask the children to guess if this story has a happy or sad

ending? Ask the group to read on independently to fi nd out.

Returning to the book• Use the map of Mole’s hill on pp184–185 to talk about where the story took

place and what happened using time words/phrases like fi rst, after that, and finally.

• Invite the children to recall some of the words they practised at the beginning

and help the teacher write them on the whiteboard. Can they fi nd them in the story?
