Codes and Conventions of a Music Magazine.

The ‘rules’ that are generally understood and accepted when producing a media text in a particular genre.
What is a Convention?
A system of symblos, letters or words given certain meaning, used for delivering messages requiring secrecy. so a media text has a message that it wants to communicate to us (mainly, this is ‘buy this magazine’!) and there are certain methods (or codes) by which it does this.
What is a Code?
B/W- connotes old age, something from the past
Yellow- stands out (all the free parts) lures you in.
Red- shows all importaint parts
Master head has 3D effect, very iconic. Man infont shows he is importaint.
Strip- big names encourages audience.
Main image-looking straight at us, connotes he is talking to us.
Puff
Hand written font – pesonal touch/signiture
Sublines
Bar code- date –issue- price-url.
Column connotes order and information.
Same text for title as front cover, HOUSE STYLE
Red, White and Black is the same as the front cover.
Man is 2 thirds of the page, shows he is important.
Man is smiling, invites you in
Red shows the important information.
Black shows what's in the magazine.
2 dogs connote he is a friendly, caring man.
place names show its worldwide
Colour: lots of reds and yellows, connotes this is the main contents page.
Yellow connotes modern

Blue, shows something different/special
Text in the pictures is anchorage
Pictures in uniform layout
Packet shows something is loose and for free within it. This promotes the magazine and acts as a selling point.
KERRANG! Title is behind the photo so it shows that it is a well established magazine and doesn’t need to promote its name too much. The strip also acts a
promoting point. The strip includes puffs of free posters.
Yellow- modern and stands out like a warning.Red- Connotes danger or a warning. It attracts us to the important parts
Colour Scheme:Yellow-modern/new. It also it’s a happy/bright colour.Red- connotes danger and warning as well as the yellow.
Rough layout shows the genre of the magazine, rock. The pictures are not straight and all different sizes.
Red and black columns feature through out the pages which shows some uniform.
Black and white photos show age which clashes with the modern yellow. This shows that the magazine is not uniform and ‘rebellious’
Simple black and white colour scheme .Some yellow and red to emphasise important parts.
Pictures included in the contents also show that that part is more important/bigger than the rest.
Messy contents logo can show the magazine is not too serious.
Handwriting shows editors personal touch/signature
Contents broken down into categories helps the reader /makes it simple.
