Purpose of an EMS


to increase compliance and

EMS Model or PDCA Cycle

EMS standards like ISO4001,BS 7750 consists of the seven modules

Module1:Commitement and Environmental Policy Module2:Initial Environmental Review Module3:Planning the Environmental Policy Module4:Implementing the Environmental Policy Module5:Measurement and Evaluation Module6:Audits and Review Module7:External Environmental Communication


Module1Commitment and Environmental Policy

Environmental policy is unique to an organizationContains a commitment to comply with all environmental regulation, to prevent pollution and to initiate a process of continual improvement


Module2:Initial Environmental Review

Before plan and implement an environmental policy

Provide an overview of the environmental issues a company facing

The basic for planning the implementation of the environmental policy


Module3:Planning the Environmental PolicyAll of an organization’s interactions with the

environment are identifiedLegal and other requirements are determinedEnvironmental objectives and targets are definedManagement program are developed to achieve

these targetsThen assign responsibilities and time frame


Module4:Implementing the Environmental PolicyTake the most time and effort within an EMS

Module5:Measurement and Evaluation

associated with a significant environmental impact Monitor performance, operational controls, &

conformity with environmental objectives & targets All equipment used for monitoring and measuring Periodically evaluate compliance with legal & other

requirements Record the evaluations


Module6:Audits and Review To achieve the organization’s environmental

objectives and targets Provides the information which top management

needs to review the EMS The top management review also changes in the

environmental policy, objectives and targets or in the EMS itself.


The review helps the following functions are accomplished

Meet third party expectations (stakeholders) Take into account new operations Consider changes in technology Improve environmental performance


Module7:External Environmental Communication

There are two main communication directions: Communicating environmental aspects of activities,

products and service to stakeholders on a continuous basis

Providing periodic information with an environmental report



Examples of EMS:Kimberly-Clark Australia was one of the first Australian companies to adopt a corporate environmental policy and develop its Environmental Management System (EMS) using ISO 14001. The company aims to:

• continually improve its environmental performance, prevent pollution and responsibly minimise and control its wastes

• plan, construct and operate all operating locations to comply with applicable regulations, to meet ISO 14001 or its equivalent and to act with due diligence for environmental protection and improvement

• source its paper-products fibre from either:– recycled fibre recovered from waste paper or– virgin fibre which is made from wood out of forests which have had their

operations and management certified to one of the listed forest management systems1. We shall strive for 100% compliance while accepting 70% as a minimum

• help conserve resources by the design and production of products to reduce the use of raw materials, packaging and energy in manufacture, and by recycling production wastes.
