Intended Learning OutcomesMODULE OUTLINEThis module challenges students to question and re-assess the concept of 'classical antiquity', exploring the history of theclassical disciplines and the ways in which this disciplinary history has shaped the way we approach classical antiquity today.Themes and trends in classical research will be considered, as well as a range of approaches to the classical past, and areaswhich are the focus of current debates.

Assessment Methods1. A critical essay analyzing recent research on a topic from a set list (3,000 words: 40%)2. A research project applying different approaches to a body of ancient evidence, from a set list (5,000 words 60%)

The module will consider the remains of these sites and monuments in detail,encouraging an understanding of these remains in their wider landscape and archaeological context. It will also consider thedevelopment and change of these sites and monuments during different periods of antiquity, highlighting the complex andmulti-layered nature of the classical Mediterranean. It will also encourage an awareness of the practicalities of carrying outresearch in the field; and raise questions about site preservation, presentation to the public, and heritage management.

This will be supplemented by online seminars both before and following the study tour, as well as a module readerand set readings.
