MODULE DESCRIPTOR TITLE Introduction to Measurement MODULE CODE 77-4685-00L LEVEL 4 CREDITS 20 DEPARTMENT Natural and Built Environment SUBJECT GROUP Construction and Quantity Surveying MODULE LEADER Emma Harrison DATE OF APPROVAL 06/07/2016

MODULE AIM To provide students with an introduction to the processes and procedures related to the measurement of building works. MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES

LO Learning Outcome 1 Apply techniques for measurement and description writing 2 Outline the conventions and procedures for abstracting and bill of quantities

production INDICATIVE CONTENT

• Measurement techniques and conventions • Maths for measurement including area, volume and centre line methods • Simple building work taking-off procedures • Techniques and equipment for surveys • Bill of quantities compilation • Basic estimating • Project based learning linked to measurement

LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGY AND METHODS

Students will be supported in their learning, to achieve the above outcomes, in the following ways: • students will be provided with support and opportunities which enable them to become

autonomous, reflective learners in regard to their own development of knowledge and their acquisition of skills and practices relevant for the world of work,

• Students will be provided with a blended teaching approach which includes ongoing face-to-face teaching activities, such as lectures, and laboratory classes. These sessions will not only enable tutor-student interaction, discussion and reflection, but also opportunities for peer supported activities through group work within the laboratory sessions

• face-to-face and/or online support will also be provided to support students understanding and engagement with learning activities and assessment tasks,

• a module handbook will be made available at the start of teaching, which includes details of the module aims, learning outcomes, assessment and marking criteria, methods of feedback, learning and teaching methods and strategy, and key reading lists and online links,

• Teaching activities will also be supported and enhanced through the use of a range of e-learning tools within a Virtual Learning Environment. Specifically, Blackboard will provide full access to module guides, teaching materials, reading lists, assessment information and activities, and a full range of other online resources and links,

• Formative and summative activities, tasks and feedback will be provided within all module to support and develop students' academic, personal and professional development (further detail provided below).

ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION

The assessment will consist of two tasks:

• Coursework one: this will test the learning from semester one teaching, including maths for

measurement, sloping sites. • Coursework two: will test the students ability to carry out a take-off and create a bill of

quantities utilising the techniques taught through semester two.

The module structure and practical teaching approach will generate a number of formative feedback opportunities. Additionally the students will have summative assessment of the semester one teaching, through coursework one, as they progress forward into semester two. Semester two teaching content will be assessed through coursework two.
