Parler du passé: Le passé composé _____ In this section you will learn how to speak about what has already happened. To indicate that an action has already been completed, the past tense, called the passé composé, is used. Although there is only one way to express this past time in French, it can be expressed in English in three ways: I traveled, I have traveled, and I did travel. This tense of the verb is called the passé composé because the verb is composed of two necessary elements: the present tense of avoir (in most verbs) or être (in a small percentage of verbs) and the past participle. Most verbs form the past participle in a predictable manner. MODULAR ACHIEVEMENT TEST The two parts of the MAT, oral and written, can be completed in any order. _____ Take the written MAT in the Individualized Instruction testing room. 2. Eurovision broadcasts special programs simultaneously via satellite in multiple countries, each with its own soundtrack in the appropriate language.

3. There is an increasing number of cable channels available to French viewers, and they are growing in popularity.

4. RTF, which stands for Radiodiffusion-télévision France, is controlled by the government. It is financed by special taxes paid by owners of television sets. 2. French news is generally broadcast at 1 p.m., 8 p.m., and between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m. (on

TF1 and France 2). On France 3, the news is on a little earlier and includes more regional and local news. News in English is available; for example, Canal + shows the ABC News in English with French subtitles.

3. The coverage of popular sports events such as soccer, tennis, and bicycle or horse races is an

important part of television programming. Events such as the Championnat de France and the Tour de France are widely televised.

Luxembourg), and by altitude. Switzerland and the French Alps have a mountainous climate with severe winters, glaciers, and eternal snows.

1. The volcanic islands in the DOMs and TOMs are Martinique, Guadeloupe, Reunion, New

Caledonia, and Tahiti. They are mountainous, and the sides of the mountains are covered with a lush and dense vegetation. The humidity of the climate is lessened by the influence of the sea and the winds, but there are frequently cyclones during the warm season.

2. To the north and along the sides of the Atlas mountains, there is a zone of plains and plateaus in a warm, sunny Mediterranean climate. To the south of the Atlas is the area of the Sahara, an immense desert where it hardly ever rains and the temperature can rise up to 49º C during the day and can fall to 9º C at night.

3. The French-speaking countries of Africa and South America have a subtropical and equatorial climate. In the northern savannah, there are one or two rainy seasons and periods of intense drought.
