Module 4 Topic 2
The basics of Linear Functions

Slope means “steepness”! Slope is m in an equation.
![Page 3: Module 4 topic 2](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022061214/549b21bab479590b098b46c6/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
There are 3 ways to find slope!1) m = rise/run2) m = y2-y1/x2-x1
3) y = mx+b

The first way to find the slope is by using: m=
In the graph to the right…there are 2 points listed(3,2) and (0,0).
You will start at the lower left point…and rise. How far do you rise?
Count the jumps!
Use this method when you are given a graph!

The first way to find the slope is by using: m=
For the run, you will start at the corner of the first point…and run. How far do you run?
Count the jumps!

Find the slope of the line.
Take 1 minute to try this on your own before proceeding to the next slide.

Find the slope of the line.
Find the 2 points that we will use.

The third way to find the slope is by putting an equation into slope
intercept form!
What is slope intercept form?
bmxy In this equation, m is the
slope!

Summary1.When given a graph, one must use m = rise over run.2.When given 2 points, one must use m=y2-y1 over x2-x1.3.When given an equation, one must put the equation into slope intercept form: y = mx +b.
