Demography factors

One reason care services vary is as a result of demography. Demography is the study of human populations, based on factors such as age and race.

These factors are used to plan services for the population such as health and welfare, education and housing.

Can you think of eight more factors? Discuss, then click on the images.

Using demography to plan local servicesThere are six main demographic characteristics used when planning health, social care and children’s services. These are:

•Age profile of the population•Level of unemployment•Level of deprivation•Number of single parents•Level of disability•Health needs

Read this description of Caerphilly. Which is the main characteristic used and how does this affect service planning?

Caerphilly has an overall health profile that is generally worse than the averagefor Wales. One particular factor is the increasing number of older people in Caerphilly. One result of this is an anticipated rise in age-related illnesses, future demand on health services and deaths from cancers and heart disease.

Now watch this video clip about the pressures our ageing population is putting on the health and social care system.

When you have watched the clip, decide if these statements are true or false.

True

• There are now more people over 65 than under 16.

• Local authorities need to do more to plan services.

• Well-being is only concerned with health care issues.

False

• Services are currently accessible for any level of need.

National Standards, targets and priorities

To improve the number of women attending breast-screening programmes.

To reduce the waiting time for appointments following referral to secondary care.To reduce the incidence of

teenage pregnancy and STIs.

Standards, targets and priorities

These are the planning frameworks set by Public Health Wales for all health and social care services, which aim to improve the health of the population, as identified by demographic characteristics. Can you think of four examples of standards, targets and priorities which may be set?

To increase the uptake of immunisation programmes for young children.
