Terminology
• Dial-up line– Normal telephone line– Charged for length of time the call takes as well as the
distance of the call.
• Dedicated or leased line– 24 hour per day connection
– Do not need to connect as in dial-up line– Pay a fixed monthly cost according to bandwidth
Methods of connecting (cables)
• Dial-up / non permanent– ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Networks)
• Digital, not analogue as in normal telephone line
• More expensive than normal telephone line• Faster than normal telephone line• Two lines (for making phone calls and for
internet connection)
