Customer Need Many mine water streams are impacted by the detrimental effect of sulfide bearing rock exposed as part of the mining process. The sulfide based minerals, when in contact with ambient oxygen, produce sulfuric acid, depressing the pH of the tailings water, and promote the dissolution of heavy metals, sulfates and other minerals into the tailings water. This low pH tailings water is often treated with lime precipitation in a high density sludge (HDS) clarifier treatment process. This HDS clarification process requires heavy site fabrication of permanent infrastructure which is costly to implement in remote locations. The HDS processing can also lead to maintenance and operational challenges associated with pumping, settling, balancing and recirculating of high viscosity fluid.
The newterra Solution newterra designs and manufactures compact, modular, membrane based high density sludge treatment systems for Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). newterra’s Modular AMD Solution employs tubular microfiltration membranes for solids separation. Our durable tubular microfiltration membranes allow us cycle solids (TSS) content up to 3 - 6% by weight with a simple and robust process to achieve a compact modular footprint and eliminate all the issues associated with the conventional HDS process.
