C. READING Read the following text!
My Ambition
My Ambition is to be a nurse. This thought came into my mind when I was in
primary five. That year, I was admitted to hospital for an operation. I realized that the
work of a nurse is very important and that is why I hope to be a nurse when I grow up.
I think I am suited for nursing because I am not frightened by ugly wounds or the
sight of blood. I am also not afraid of darkness. This will prove very helpful when I
become a nurse because every nurse has do night duties.
At present I am a member of my school Junior Red Cross Society. I learn
something about first aid and home nursing. In this way I prepare myself to take on the
job of a nurse in future.
In addition I often go to the national Library to borrow books on nursing because
I would like to deepen my knowledge on it.
At present I am still a student. When I finish my secondary education. I hope to
become a nurse in one of the hospitals. With much hard work and some luck. I hope to
pass the examinations and become a qualified nurse.

A. READING Task 1 Read the following text and answer the questions!
The Long-Distance Teacher
Mr. Frank Garret, 65, is a schoolteacher. He is English, but he lives in France, in
the Normandy village of Yerville. Mr. Garret lives in France, but works in England.
Every Monday he leaves home at 2.30 in the morning and drives 101 miles from
his village to Boulogne, where he leaves his car and catches the ferry to Folkestone.
Then he catches the train to Maidstone in Kent and he arrives at Manor school at 8.25.
He teaches French from 9.00 in the morning to 3.30 in the afternoon, and then leaves
school. He arrives home at 9.30 in the evening. The journey there and back takes twelve
hours and costs only £ 16!
Fortunately, Mr. Garret works in England and only one day a week.
And what does he do on the other days? He teaches English! he has a class of
eighteen French students in Yerville.
“Yes, on Tuesday I’m tired he says, but I love my job in England and I love my
home in france. I’m a happy man!”

The verbs are usually used for arriving and departing to express scheduled or planned action: come, go, leave, arrive, depart, return, take off, land.

1. For an action happening now:

2. For an action happening during this period of time/ about this time but not
necessarily at the moment of speaking:
- What are you doing nowadays? Oh, I am still working at the same place - Everyone is talking about the new James Bond film. - People are eating less meat nowadays (= you are describing a trend which is going on). - I am reading a play by Shaw (=this may mean at the moment of speaking but may also mean now in a more general sense) - He is teaching French and learning Greek (=He may not be doing either at the moment of speaking)
3. For a definite arrangement in the near future (the most usual way of expressing
one’s immediate plans):
- I’m meeting Peter tonight. He is taking me to the theatre. - Are you doing anything tomorrow afternoon? Yes, I’m playing tennis with Ann. - I am on holiday at the moment, but I am starting a new course next week. - Hurry up! The train is leaving soon (=It will leave at any moment) - What are you doing tomorrow night?
4. For describing and emphasizing a never-ending series of events
In this use of the present continuous, the adverbs always, forever, or constantly
are usually added:

- You never do your homework on time: you are forever making excuses - She is always trying to show that she knows more than everyone else. - I am constantly having to remind you to tidy up your room.

INTRODUCTION
Very often in business situations you may find yourself having to give a presentation
describing changes and trends in business or progress of your company. In such
situation, sometimes you have to use visual information like tables, graphs, and charts which can
help explain concepts clearly. This chapter will discuss about how to explain the information
included in tables, graphs, charts and change the information you get from tables, charts, and
graphs into writing.
A. A LOOK AT THE FIGURES
Every year at the Healthcare Exhibition in Switzerland manufacturers of
medical equipment show their new products to customers from all over the world. The
two bar charts below give information about the number of exhibitors and the number of visitors.
The following is Kristin Rufli's presentation explaining the bar charts. As you read,

In 1987, the Healthcare Exhibition moved from Geneva to a bigger exhibition
centre in Zurich, so many more exhibitors were able to attend. But the first exhibition in
Zurich was badly organised and, because of this, the number of exhibitors dropped in 1988.
The organiser wanted to make sure that this did not happen again, so, in 1989, they reduced
the cost of a stand and sent letters to hundreds of companies, advertising the exhibition. In
1991 the organisers opened the exhibition to non-European companies and in that year 118
companies attended.
Over 85,000 visitors came to the Healthcare Exhibition on the first day. This was due
to a good publicity campaign and because May the 1st is a public holiday in Switzerland.
However, on the second day the weather was bad and many people stayed at home. On
Wednesday, another important exhibition — Salvacon 93 — opened in Zurich, and the
numbers of visitors fell again. Because of this, the organisers decided to make entrance to the
exhibition free from Thursday. Their idea worked and 300,000 people visited the exhibition

Use
The past continuous tense expresses action at a particular moment in the past. The action started before that moment but has not finished at that moment. For example, yesterday I watched a film on TV. The film started at 7pm and finished at 9pm.

APPLICATION LETTER
Application letter is one of the documents to be included when we apply for a job.
In fact, application letter is like an introduction letter or covering letter in which we
mention all of the documents and requirements attached. In Indonesia, the most common
documents and attachments to be enclosed with the application letter are:
1. Resume or Curriculum Vitae
2. Photo
3. Copies of certificates or diplomas
4. Copy of identification card (ID card)
5. Letter of recommendation
6. Health certificates
7. Police clearance
There are two types of application letter, they are:
1. Solicited letter
Solicited letter is an application letter that is sent to a company that advertises its vacancies
through the media.
2. Unsolicited letter
Unsolicited letter is an application letter that is sent to a company although you do not know
whether there is a vacancy or not in that company.
Most jobs will have been advertised in the papers or specialist publications, and
before you write your application letter, you should study the wording of the advertisement
carefully. Find out exactly what the employer is looking for (for example, a certain amount

of experience, familiarity with particular language, etc.). Then, in your application letter,
try to show that you have all the qualities, qualifications, and experience that the employer

In other countries, application letter is also called "Sales Letter". This is because in
some way we are both salesperson and product which try to attract an employer's attention
and persuade him/her to grant you an interview for a job.
In Indonesia, there are no such hints suggested to be included in a letter of
application. The most important items to be mentioned are:
1. what job or position you are applying
2. how you have heard about the job vacancy
3. when you are ready to begin work or to be interviewed
The following are worth language points to be looked at when writing a letter for a
position:

Nobody hires anyone for any kind of job without an interview. Before you set out for an interview, think about what your prospective employer expects to discover from the meeting. The interview won’t show him how well you work, but it will give him an idea of how you handle yourself, how you respond to other people, whether you are punctual and make a good appearances, and how interested you are in the job.
THINKING ABOUT THE INTERVIEW
Your appearance 1. Dress neatly and appropriately for the interview. 2. Choose traditional footwear, uncuffed and well-shined. 3. Wear a minimum of jewellery, but wear a wristwatch to keep track on time. 4. Do the basics before you go (bathe, put on clean clothes, clean your fingernails, comb

Note: Notice the amount detail necessary when you are talking about your experience. One of the most common mistakes made by foreigners when discussing their former employment is to speak too generally. The employer wants to know exactly what you did and how you did it; the more detail you can give the more the interviews know that you understand the type of work. Remember to vary your vocabulary when talking about your responsibilities. Also, do not begin every sentence with “I”. Use the passive voice, or an introductory clause to help you add variety to your presentation.
Interviewer : What is your greatest strength? Candidate : I work well under pressure. When there is a deadline (=a time by which the
work must be finished), I can focus on the task at hand (=current project) and structure my work schedule well. I remember one week when I had to get 6 new customer reports out by Friday at 5. I finished all the reports

One afternoon, my colleague was involved with a troublesome (=difficult) customer who felt he was not being served well. I made the customer a cup of coffee and invited both my colleague and the client to my desk where we solved the problem together.
OR I am a trouble shooter. When there was a problem at my last job, the
manager would always ask me to solve it. Last summer, the LAN server at work crashed. The manager was desperate and called me in (=requested my help) to get the LAN back online. After taking a look at the daily backup, I detected the problem and the LAN was up and running (=working) within the hour.
Note: This is not the time to be modest! Be confident and always give examples. Examples show that you are not only repeating words you have learned, but actually do posses that strength.
Interviewer : What is your greatest weakness? Candidate : I am overzealous (=work too hard) and become nervous when my co-
workers are not pulling their weight (=doing their job). However, I am aware of this problem, and before I say anything to anyone, I ask myself why the colleague is having difficulties.
OR I tend to spend too much time making sure the customer is satisfied.
However, I began setting time-limits for myself if I noticed this happening. Note: This is a difficult question. You need to mention a weakness that is actually a strength. Make sure that you always mention how you try to improve the weakness.
Interviewer : Why do you want to work for Smith & Sons? Candidate : After following your firm’s progress for the last 3 years, I am convinced that
Smith & Sons are becoming one of the market leaders and I would like to be part of the team.
OR I am impressed by the quality of your products. I am sure that I would be a

Note: Prepare yourself for this question by becoming informed about the company. The more detail you can give, the better you show the interviewer that you understand the company.

RI : The exact years? Well, I worked for PT KIMA from 1992-1994, and, I

RI : Actually I liked my first job very much. But since they were having
some serious financial problems, they had to lay off the junior staff.
And I was one of them.
PM : I see. What about your present job? Why do you want to leave the
job?
RI : Your company is considered one of the big five. A large company is
usually very well-organized and offers more challenging jobs. It will be
a great opportunity to work for such a company. So, when I saw your
advertisement for this position, I was very interested.
PM : Uh huh. One last question. Can you tell me why we should hire you?
RI : I will give you several good reasons. First of all, I’m honest,

Interviewer : What do you reap from your friendship?
Candidate : I learn many things about how to deal with someone from different
culture and I’m used to seeing others from their personal angle of
viewpoint. Let’s say when I talk to Batak I need not be shy and to
watch my conversation. Harsh utterances is very common for them,
still, although sometimes they look so rude, I must understand that
they don’t mean to do so. What I mostly like from them is the
openness they show in daily conversation. It’s very easy to deal with
them as they can not hide their emotion in front of me.
Interviewer : What else do you learn from your surroundings?
Candidate : Compared with my own cultures as Javanese, it’s very difficult to
know someone’s intention instantly. Everyone is like wearing masks
on their saily activities. Despite smile and warmth someone shows, he
might have hate us, so watch your way in speaking with most

Javanese.But one thing, we, from Java culture excel among others, we
can hide and control emotion while dealing with others. For me it’s
pretty hard to conceal my feelings, though. One thing is sure,
regardless traits and cultures someone has, there is one principle
applies here. In all cultures and custom, there must be good guy and
bad guy.
Interviewer : Have you ever been dealing with foreigner?
Candidate : you bet, almost every day I encounter foreigner wandering around.
They are visiting Yogyakarta quite often to see the beautiful scenery
and tourist resorts there.
Interviewer : Do you have any idea what they like and what they don’t?
Candidate : They like the originality and pure traditional atmosphere we have.
It’s a matter of taste. I once guided a British tourist who intended to
visit Yogyakarta Palace. She asked me a lot about history and culture
and the palace. She was very curious to know about history and
eventually she was very pleased and satisfield with my answer. What
they really don’t like about us is if they were seen as foreigners as
aliens from different planet. Weird as they look like, white skin, they
wanted to blend with us. And more annoyingly, worse, they are afraid
of the criminals in our country. Just like my guest from Australia, he
has lost his camera when visiting Borobudur, someone had stolen it
from him a moment he was not unaware.
Interviewer : For people your age, you are very observant about cultures. By the
way, do you speak other foreign languages besides English?
Candidate : Thank God, Yes. I couldn’t agree more. I speak French and Japanese
as well. Since two years ago, I’ve been learning both languages my
own self. Foreign languages is like a song to me. There is no day
without speaking or listening to foreign languages. Even in my house
I always stay tune to broadcasting programs or news.

Interviewer : Do you find feedback important in conducting your duty?
Candidate : Certainly. Applying marketing strategy, for instance, must have
consequences. The consequences could be good like a rise of
products sold or vice versa could be bad like a decrease of selling.
To find out (figure out) whether marketing strategy is effective or
not we need feed-back from the market and the employees.
Market decides the efficacy of marketing strategy while the
employees are the one who know the condition on the application.
Feed-back from both of them can revise our strategy to be better
and better, That’s why marketing manager must be open to critics
