We are in the middle of the most amazing Graffi ti Summer ever.  Th e Modesto Historic Cruise Route is in place and thousands of people from around the world came to enjoy Modesto USA.  Th e stars of American Graffi ti were here and spent time on the cruise route of 10th St, the same streets that were the genesis George Lucas stories. George Lucas is a great storyteller and the stories he told about Modesto really captured the time.  It was all about the stories of a couple people and how we related to each other and the same is still true today.      Modesto is about the people.  Th is month, our senior editor Ruben Porras was hit by a car while riding his bike and the love and concern from the community has been amazing.  Th at is why our July issue is devoted to “You”, the people of Modesto. “Everyone is a mover and shaker!” everyone. Everyone makes their part of Modesto a little bit better and these are the people that we like to celebrate.  Whether is is making a lemonade stand, making a concert poster, singing some blues, taking a picture, pouring a great cup of coff ee, running a good restaurant, we all do our part to move and shake Modesto.  ModestoView is truly a community eff ort. We have so many great friends here in Modes-to and our all of our writers are truly involved in making Modesto a great place to live and we are so fortunate that they take their valuable time to contribute to ModestoView. Every one of them does something very cool. You are getting the best info from the people that make things happen here in town.  Th at is why ModestoView is so fun.  We are all just out there telling our friends about the cool things happening and because we have some awesome advertisers, we can design, print and distribute ModestoView so that it reaches nearly 100,000 people each month.  You can fi nd ModestoView in doctors’ offi ces, lube and service stations, restaurants, bars, nail salons and so many more wonderful local busi-ness and many of you even get it delivered directly to your door.  Th anks to our team of wonderful people that help make our positive and local magazine a monthly reality and spread the word during the month at ModestoView.com, facebook.com/modestoview and through our twitter.com/modestoview   Th anks for all of the com-ments we get from listeners that tune in to us in the mornings on KFIV1360 and so very glad you are tuning in. We have only one mission: To help you enjoy this place Modesto USA and to forever cel-ebrate that there is so much to do here in town and there is something for everyone.  We are serving up Modesto Civic Pride daily.   Please feel free to email me and tell me what you like, what you don’t like and what we can do to make this even better.

Th anks,Chris MurphyPublisher, ModestoView [email protected]

Thanks for tuning into Famous View this month. I’ll admit that this won’t be my most exciting column but I’ll do the best I can. You may or may not have read that I was involved in a traffi c accident and I’m doing my best to deal with the pain. Luck-ily, my amazing daughter is busting out her awesome transcription skills and giving her old dad a helping hand. Th e original plan this month was for me to get a Modesto-based tattoo but obviously that can’t happen in the shape that I’m in. I haven’t totally given up on the idea though. Woode McCumber of Paper Planes Art Gallery and Tattoo Studio has a beautiful portrait of the State Th eatre sign all drawn up and ready to go and this particular piece really makes sense to me. It was hard to choose a Modesto landmark to wear on my skin forever, but the State Th eatre holds special memories for me that I just couldn’t deny. Th e State Th eatre was one of the fi rst plac-es I visited when I fi rst made my way to Modesto. Th at was back before the renova-tion and I remember sitting alone during “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” but for some reason, I didn’t feel alone at all. I have written before that it may seem strange for me to consider an old building to be an old friend but that makes sense here. Th e State welcomed me when I didn’t know anybody else in Modesto and since

then it has been the scene for some of my most special moments in Modesto. I’m okay with admitting that I’ve laughed there, cried there, fallen in love there, and lost it all there. I suppose my heart will always be in the third row of that balcony. All of us here at Modesto View really hope that you enjoy the issue that you have in your hands. It was meant to be a celebra-tion of the people that we count on to make a positive diff erence in our lives every day. You won’t fi nd any actual “famous” people featured in this issue. You won’t fi nd any millionaires. You will fi nd the woman that goes out of her way to bring laughter to our city, the woman that will show you the hottest clubs in town and gladly buy you a drink no mat-ter who you are, and you will meet Phillip

Johnson, the only person that I imagine could make the faces of these people come to life. I hope that you have an amazing July full of fun with your families and friends and that you are safe. My July will likely in-clude a surgery to fi x my hand and some pretty intense recovery. No matter what I go through, I’m glad to be here and I’m thankful that you’ve taken the time to read my words. Do something special this month. Love somebody. Be good humans.

Catch me on Facebook at facebook.com/rporraswriter or tag along with me on Twitter as @modestofamous.

Do something special this month!

Th e Muse is down on Tenth Street, across from Gallo Center, and CSUS student run Gallery 909.   Every other Saturday morning, Jack Morris has resumed Chartreuse Muse life drawing sessions in the cool upstairs gallery.    Jack is one of the emerging artists in the Emer-gence show at the Chartreuse muse that will run through the summer.  Other artists in the show are Spencer Carmona, Natalie Porter, Angela Corpora, Sergio Cuarenta, Servando Garcia, Daniel Morrisey, Jennifer Laughlin Price, Kyle and Christie Simpson, and Jeanette Th relfall.  Across Tenth Street, Gallery 909 will be featuring artists Natalie Portman and Di-ana Isho in July. Over at Mistlin Gallery, the Summer Splash members show and Living Art tat-too themed shows are open through the end of this month.   Mistlin is a cool place to go shopping downtown for art jewelry and local artist created fi ne arts.  Get infor-mation on adult and student classes by call-ing 209 529-3369 or drop in gallery hours at 1015 J Street. Looking toward Labor Day and beyond, the Central California Art Association will be hosting its second “Art in the Garden” event September 29.  Tickets  go on sale soon at the Mistlin Gallery, Greens Market and other locations. Planning for the Th ird

Stanislaus Artists Open Studio Tour the fi rst weekend in April 2013 is under way and seeking  volunteers to join the organ-izing eff ort in September.  If interested, contact [email protected] air conditioned art notes, drop in on Picasso’s at 10th and J Street, DEVA, In-trinsic Elements, and Crow Trading from your Art Walk Maps.  Pop in on Paper Planes Tattoo and Gallery when you see a show note, or Mocha Magic and Fleur De Lis when visiting Farmer’s Market on 16th  Street.  In August, look for the Valley Sun Catch-ers show coming up at Mistlin Gallery, and in September look for the new partnership Building Imagination Gallery and Cinema from Modesto Art Museum and CSU Stanislaus opening at Tenth and I Streets.  For more information on the new ven-ture, email [email protected]

EWBAR

If my booze-soaked brain remembers correctly, TIki Lounge was the fi rst ever bar column I did for ModestoView.  Th is was years ago, of course, and back when I thought I was cool for having a pen name and (really, really) stupid catch phrases.  Luckily, I’ve matured to the level of col-umnist who is satisfi ed with slipping-in sexual innuendos, self-deprecating humor about my onset alcoholism, and the occa-sional bad word (just to see if I can get it past the editors). My point is that I’ve been a big fan of Tiki since my earliest drinking days; it has al-ways been synonymous with heavy-handed drinks, very fun late nights with friends, and some other stuff that wouldn’t be ap-propriate to talk about at this exact time.  I don’t believe I am alone when I say I con-sider Tiki to be a Modesto landmark bar insomuch that it stands out as one of the two gay bars in our community.  Both, it should be noted, are excellent fun.I love it that the initial reaction to Tiki is still: “You know it’s a GAY bar right?”  No s**t people, that’s part of appeal.  While talking with the lovely Zantha Towe about all things Tiki, I asked what she would say to someone (ex: wary heterosexual males) who would never would think to fi nd themselves in a gay bar.  She stated, “If someone doesn’t want to come, they don’t have to.  Our fi rst rule is to respect and wel-come everyone, as long as you want to have fun.  And I guarantee if you do, you’ll leave having had a hell of an experience.  We may get as packed as sardines in here on week-ends, but it’s always a fun time.” In short: everyone is welcome, everyone can come, let’s all leave our hang-ups in the closet. Towe,pre-Tiki days, was previously a mort-gage broker who decided to make a big career switch aft er the market crash. She stated it was important to her to be doing something that she loves and she’s been putting that into action at the Tiki ever since.  Zantha states simply: “I’m lucky. If I didn’t have the great customer base and

The Tiki Lounge

dedicated bartenders I have, it wouldn’t be worth it.  I have a rewarding job and I’m proud of what we’ve done here.” Tiki, open 365 and always sans cover, of-fers up live music, karaoke nights (“It’s like gay church. We put the music up on the TV screens and everyone sings along.”), an indoor fi re pit, an extensive bar driven by charismatic bartenders, build-your-own Bloody Mary events, and is home base to Modesto PRIDE’s offi cial aft er-party (which is coming up soon!).  Says Zantha about the PRIDE aft er-party: “It brings in a ton of people who have never been here before.  We get the straight guys with their girlfriends who have never been and real-ize that everyone does have fun here.  If you come back at least three times, you’ll be hooked aft er that.  We’re one of the best places around for birthdays, too.”  As a per-son who has had a birthday at Tiki, Zan-tha is speaking true.  At least, the parts I remember were fantastic.Where does Zantha go to drink when she’s off for a night?  “I come here!  Th is is the best place to be.  Where else would I go?  Tiki is throwing the best party in town every night.”

Gels, shakes, pills and powders on race day aren’t a good idea, especially if you have never tried any of the above before. On June 10th I competed in Th e Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon for the 3rd time consisting of a 1.5-mile swim, 1Ž2 mile run to bike transition, an 18-mile bike ride and an 8-mile run. Th e fi rst time I escaped in 2009, I completed it in 3:59.   In 2010 I Escaped Th e Rock and crossed the fi nish line in 3:07. In 2012 I prepared and trained hard, but did not PR and crossed the fi n-ished line at 3:08.  I was disappointed, not in my time, but because I didn’t follow my own rule on race day; don‘t experiment with a new product. It’s always been the same for me in this Tri-athlon. I have to wake up at 3:45AM to get it together on the marina green to set up my bike/run transition area and then board the bus for the pier at 5:45AM. Th e prob-lem is, I get hungry by the time we jump in the bay at 7:30AM for the start of the

Race On the Natural

Triathlon. OK so I fi gured I would try this new product for breakfast to keep me feel-ing full through the race. Th e study was, it’s made of a process starch that sits in your lower intestine and digest slowly through the Triathlon providing you with the en-ergy as needed to get you through the competition without feeling hungry. My problem was my body didn’t agree with this new product and I paid for it about a mile in the swim and stomach cramps came on strong. In 2010 I did this very same swim in 37 minutes, this time it took me 50 min-utes. Disoriented and in pain I overshot the beach and had to swim against a 6-mile current. Staying focused and enduring, I made up some time on the ride and the run still placing better overall then I did in 2010 and just shy of a minute from a PR. In 2010 I fi nished in 3:07 and placed 140th in my age division of 400 Tri-Athletes and 790th overall with nearly 2000 Tri-Athletes competing. Th is year I did it in 3:08 and

placed 108 out nearly 400 entries in my age division and 540th over all with nearly 2000 entries. Not too bad considering the potty breaks/GI issues I had during the race as well as having to stop and fi x a de-railed bike chain on the ride. Sure it wasn’t my best time for a Triathlon and having stomach issues at the fi nish isn’t the best way to remember any race. But it was a learning experience and I leave you with this, race on the natural. Experi-menting with a new product isn’t advisable on race day and not only can it ruin your race. Go natural!

Mediterranean Market and Grill has Ebelskivers!!!Do you want a splendid reason to say “Good Morning Modesto?” How about starting your morning off relaxing, sipping on a hot cup of coff ee or a rich espresso, with a slight breeze drift ing through a charming patio setting?  I have found just such a place, Th e Mediterranean Market and Grill, fi ne Italian dining on McHenry is open 7 days a week for breakfast. When it comes to breakfast I could eat it 3 times a day! Considering the vast choices repre-sented on their menu I could dine there 3 times a day, for over a week and never eat the same thing twice! What in the world is an Ebelskiver you ask? A rich Danish pancake ball made from a thick sour cream batter severed with a strawberry freezer jam, scrumptious! So there I was enjoying a Mimosa made with fresh squeezed orange juice, when I could hear my fellow patrons chattering about the best Huevos Rancheros ever and the Market Scramble with Italian sausage, on-ions, and spinach to die for. When sudden-ly coming right towards me was waitress Dayna with a decadent crepe on a plate for the table behind me! Next time that crepe is mine! Whatever you may be in the mood for at lunch time I’m sure you won’t be disap-pointed. Th e clam chowder is one to brag about, while the salads look so fresh, so, lol, I’ll likely order the Pollo Modesto (so hard to decide!) as it has many of my faves; fet-tucini with chicken breast, prosciutto, pro-volone cheese, and a creamy alfredo sauce. On July 9th Th e Mediterranean Market and Grill is pleased to announce they will

Mediterranean Market and Grill

be open 6 nights a week, M-Sat. for dinner. Another fantastic announcement is they are now serving Broasted Chicken, a revo-lutionary method of pressure frying chick-en using condiments! A must try! Also on the dinner menu for Friday and Saturday nights you can treat yourself to some oys-ters or perhaps the grill’s signature prime rib. If you are a seafood lover, you are in luck they serve calamari, shrimp, clams, mussels, salmon, and tilapia! For me, hands down, I’ll devour a rack of lamb and follow it with crème brulee and a Cheshire Cat grin! Carmen Sabatino, a long time Modesto restaurateur, former Modesto mayor and schoolteacher has been at this location for 8 years. He proudly spoke of the 19 people employed in this fi ne establishment, in-cluding 5 baristas! Carmen shared a story with me about the restaurant’s elegant, yet comfy chairs. Th ey are from Modesto’s original Sundial Restaurant over 50 years ago. He is delighted when his customers say how familiar those chairs look and he gets to tell the fun history.  Th ere is a bit of Sundial history with every breakfast at the Mediterranean Market and the regulars are there for a taste.  Signature Modesto View question: Bea-tles or Stones? Carmen simply responded Beatles, I gave him the “really?” look, and he politely said he liked them from seeing them on Th e Ed Sullivan Show, so I let him off the hook with that. EWSTREET

It started out in 2000 on J St with Flying Blind, Post Garbo, Blessid Union of Souls in front of a gigantic cruise ship with 5 other stages and 20 other bands and a dis-co and ModestoView was there.  Now, 12 years later, X fest is the Central Valley’s best summer party.   You can go for the amaz-ing line up of national and local bands, the awesome mix of DJ and house music or you can head bang at the metal stage or go all classic rock and then just dance the night away, eating and drinking and partying with your friends.  X Fest has something for everyone.   If you like to eat, there are more food ven-dors than a fair and you can get your taste of everything at your favorite downtown restaurants and bars, many offering their own VIP packages. There are fun booths, things to do, vendors with cool stuff and of course, lots of beads to make X fest the best party of the summer.

This season offers a huge variety of per-formers from Sebastian Bach to the excit-ing performance of the Moonshine Bandits to Slaughter and the amazing Danctronauts landing with their giant spaceship.    This year there is a special stage for the tribute bands and you can rock the night way with bands celebrating AC/DC to the Police thanks to our good friends Ron and Doug as well as a special Fat Cat Tribute Stage.  There is a new traditional Latin stage with exciting performances from Banda Pa-chuco and Raza Obrera and an alternative Latin stage with Bazura and El Maurader.    You can expect amazing house mixes into the night from DJ Lady Kate, Weaksas and DJ Ogre and so many more.  Event creator and promoter Chris Ricci has worked with the City of Modesto to make sure that 15,000 of your best friends all enjoy the music and party safely in Downtown Modesto. There are no gang colors, and security is tight so be cool.

ModestoView X Fest Tips.Get there early! Take advantage of the short lines early and get in and hang out and your favorite bar or restaurant. This way you’ll be there early and get to see all the people show up. You will not re-gret it. Key things to plan: Drink lots of water, park a few blocks away from X Fest and walk. Bring your camera, your party attitude, and make

OH Modesto, you have no idea what’s in store for you on August 4th at the 13th Annual X-FEST…The Dancetronauts from Santa Cruz, CA and their spaceship will arrive in full force with DJ’s, Dancetrohotties, Mu-tant Cars, Fire Dancers and much, much more, including the premiere of a never-heard-before sound system that will blow your feet right out from underneath you. The Dancetronauts were founded by Philip Plastina in 2005 when they first reached the Playa at Burning Man, Black Rock City, Nevada.  That year Philip de-cided to sell his construction business and dedicate his time to continually im-proving the ship. In 2009 he met up with the Shady Warehouse Crew from Los Angeles, the Dancetronauts took off and became a huge hit. From there, Philip’s productions have grown larger and more imaginative. The   Dancetronauts continue to build, whether they’re working with different

construction materials, DJ’s, or Dancetro-hotties. One Dancetrohottie, Lexie, has been on this adventure withPhilip for the last year and her LED costumes are amaz-ing and OH so sexy, to say the least!  Don’t miss the Dancetrohotties on the Dancetro-nauts’ Stage at this year’s X-Fest   Philip is the staple DJ for the Dancetro-nauts along with Modesto’s own Brian Wil-liams, plus TravNasty from San Francisco. The Dancetronauts and their 30+ crew have been attending different events be-sides Burning Man, from San Francisco to Las Vegas, showing people how the Dance-tronauts party.  Believe me Modesto, this will be noth-ing like you have ever seen. I am a Burner (BurningMan) myself and I couldn’t even explain to you what will be unleashed at X-Fest. If the DJ’s don’t lure you in, the show will!  Just look for the BIG SHIP, sexy Dan-cetrohotties, hot men in spacesuits and lis-ten to the beating vibe that will draw you in.

One of the most exciting stages of the 2011 X Fest was the Sweet Pea Knickers Rockabilly stage on J Street.  Th e joint was jumpin’ all night long, roller derby, big slap-pin’ bass, pin ups, vintage amps and clothes and a whole lot of fun.  Th e rockabilly stage is back and bigger than ever for 2012.    Tiger Honey Pot ….will also be taking the stage at X-Fest , from what I understand this duo from San Francisco is a no frills, no shame, no B/S just Rock n Roll. Which they love to spread their love of music to you (the fans). Laying down the beats of Surf, Heavy Blues, Boogie and Punk. Tiger Honey Pot members are Toa Fujimoto (gui-tar) and JonJon Selin (drums). Th ese two gentlemen met at an underground music scene in the Mission District of San Fran-cisco Ca. With Toa raised in Japan with infl uences of Rock and Roll and American Blues and JonJon in Michigan listening to Classic Rock together they grew into this amazing duo. With a small time together, fi ve years, they have performed many shows from junkyards to huge outdoor fes-tivals. I recommend you check them out on the Unity Stage as well…..also, helps me that these two gentlemen are fans of Burn-ing Man.Gearbox….. A closer local out of Merced. Th is trio is fi lled with Rockabilly, Punk and Surf.  With infl uences of the Saddle Tramps and Reverend Horton Heat. Two of my all time favorites. Th at alone makes me want to dance and jive to the sounds and beats of Gearbox. John Th arp (vocals and guitar) Josh Bristow (bass) and Jesse Valencia(drums).Th ese three gentlemen are also on the local record label of Hi-Ho Silver Records. Be-ing a local to the valley, there should be no reason you can’t travel to Merced or even closer Modesto to check out Gearbox and their talents they will bestow upon you.Th e Pendletons…. Now, this should be a band that Modesto fans and abroad should

ROCKABILLY returns to X-Fest 2012

be familiar with. Tony Trevino (founder, vocals & guitar) is a fantastic sweet good guy. Elan Tribo (upright bass), and Mikey Skullz (drums). I have seen this threesome of fi ne gentlemen numerous times and have not yet been disappointed in their tal-ents as true musicians. Th ese gentlemen’s interest in Rock n Roll is extensive from Muddy Waters to Th e Cramps, when these three get together and start strumming and banging their instruments, I see a crowd of people jumping and jiving, slamming or swinging to their fabulous beats. Th e Pen-dletons are also on Hi-Ho Silver Records. Tony and his wife also are the owners of Unity Music, which is the Rockabilly stage at X-Fest. Stigma 13…..Visiting from Anitoch, Ca. a four piece band with sounds of  Rock n Roll, garage punk. Th ese four gentlemen Maxx (guitar/vocals), John (guitar/vocals) Jared (drums/vocals) and Mitch(bass/vo-cals). Stigma 1 formed in 2001 since they have hooked up they like to play hard, loud, punk rock n roll ! Th e four piece has infl uences of Motorhead and the Ramones. Please, show your support to Stigma 13 on the Unity Music Stage.Rockin Rick and the Rhythm Wraglers…..from the foothills also Rockin Rick is the owner of Hi-Ho Silver Records. Rockin Rick(guitar/vocal) Big Dave(stand up bass & wise cracks) Todd Jaggers (lead guitar/hustling) Steve Slow Gin Rummy ( slappin’ skins and staying out late). With the love and passion for the late 50’s,Country West-ern and Rhythm and Blues. Rockin Rick is no stranger to the love and passion for true soul and  slappin beats of  Rock n Roll. I have watched Rockin Rick and the Rhythm Wranglers perform and loved it. Th eir stage presents is full of energy. You will have to see for yourself the talents that will please your dancing shoes and your soul. You can also, see these boys play from the foothills to Los Angeles.

So come out and enjoy fresh coffee from Serrano’s and great baked goods from Pure Love and well as food from Bauer’s 66 1Ž2 while you listen to Daniel Edward Harris, Poor House Millionaires and Love Core. On July 19th the Thursday Night Ram-ble comes back from summer break with a great night of acoustic music Featuring Prof Maxx Smith. This will be our 35th Ramble event since we began last October and we are looking forward to many more to come.

Big Earl and the Cryin’ Shame are play-ing at the Cow Track in Oakdale on July 13th with special guests, Double Barrel Blessing. Then on the 27th we will be at the Barking Dog and T’s on the 28th.Thanks to Strawberry I was introduced to

what I like to refer to as “American Roots Music.” I remember it like it was yesterday: My first time at The Strawberry Music Festival held twice a year at beautiful Camp Mather, just a few miles away from Yosemite National Park. I don’t know if It was breathing that fresh mountain air or the fact that I hadn’t gone out of town for quite sometime, but I found the whole experience extremely inspiring and eye-opening. The sound of banjos, fiddles and Mando-lins enchanted me as I wandered around camp sites strolling from one jam to anoth-er soaking in all this new music I’d just dis-covered, or on the other hand, had ignored. What fascinated me the most was seeing young people, some in their early teens completely engrossed in the music of their grandparents’ generation. My definition of “roots,” encompasses all the music popular in the early 1900s such as country, blues and gospel, which went on to evolve into jazz, pop and rock & roll. Society has come a long way from early

Editors note: Ray Vazira is a Modesto-based musician and advocate for the arts. Vazira plays regularly at several different venues and with various bands including Poor House Millionaires, House of Orange and Love Core. This is the first in a series of planned monthly col-umns.

blues and country, but it seems to me that we’ve made a full circle back to our roots which are once again being redefined. Ever since my first Strawberry Music Fest’, I can’t turn on the TV or the radio with-out hearing elements of “roots music” in-corporated into theme songs for various commercials, movies and TV shows. Even music stores are catching up with the trend offering larger selections of banjos, mando-lins, ukuleles and harmonicas. More and more musicians and music en-thusiasts alike are drawn to the simplistic, honest and down-to-earth nature of roots music. One wouldn’t have to go farther then our own Central Valley to find evidence of this trend. For example, on a typical Wednesday open mic night at The Cow Track Lounge in Oakdale, you can hear local performers strumming on their banjos and blowing on their harps. On a Friday or Saturday throughout the area, you might hear the cheerful sounds of “The Good Luck Thrift Store Outfit” or “Big Earl & The Cryin’ Shame”; just to name a few.

In a time where people are once again seek-ing the more personal, local touch when it comes to business and financial relation-ships, Mocse Credit Union’s philosophy of “People Helping People.” Is a refreshing al-ternative among financial services provid-ers. “We are a not-for-profit financial coopera-tive, owned and operated by members, to best serve members,” says President/CEO Tracey Kerr. “As a member, you have an equal share in the ownership of this credit union and benefit by receiving competitive interest rates and a full range of financial products.” Mocse has grown with the community, having been founded in February of 1959 with seven members and $35.00 in assets, motivated by the desire to provide financial choices. “Our seven founding members recognized that employees of Modesto City Schools were in need of financial services provided by a credit union as a banking

Mocse Credit Union – People Helping People“Bringing Service Home”

alternative to the “For Profit” banks,” Kerr explains. Part of being a truly local provider is about being an active member of the community and Mocse is very involved with a variety of charitable organizations, as well as provid-ing financial education to schools and busi-nesses. Kerr shares a particularly favorite success story: “Mocse Credit Union was very excited to partner with the ROP Pro-gram at Sonora High School. As a result of this partnership we were able to open a “Full Service” branch in August 2010 on the Sonora High School campus. The branch is run by ROP students and overseen by our Branch Manager. The students learn the skills needed to work in a financial insti-tution as a teller. The community has also benefited with Mocse being the first credit union with a branch available to them in Tuolumne County.” Mocse Credit Union has expanded to bea-ble to offer financial services to everyone to

the counties of Stanislaus, Tuolumne, Mari-posa and Merced, reaching well over half a million people. Kerr adds that it really is all about meeting the needs of their members, and being there to listen and provide guid-ance. It’s not just about offering different

financial services, she explains, but instead bringing members the most competitive and innovative financial services available.

Yay it’s summer! By Abbey Murphy

Now that it’s July, I’m sure there are many out there that are over the “yay it’s summer, I have so many things to do” phase and are feeling a little confused about what activi-ties to take on next! First off, we all know that July is a celebra-tion of our nation’s independence and there are many BBQs and firework shows to keep us occupied! Make sure you get decked out in that red, white, and blue and check out the popular 4th of July Parade right here in downtown Modesto! After the fourth and the last two MoBands however, our to-do list may be dwindling so, I’m suggesting: The Young Modesto’s Top 3 Guide to July! 1) I don’t know about you, but when I’m swimming or out in the sun the one thing I crave the most is...wait for it...fruit!! Whether it’s a nectarine or some fresh blue-berries, I love it all and we can find afford-able and delicious produce all over town.

I might suggest Loratelli’s Fruit Stand, the Farmer’s Market or another venue that ac-tually lets you pick your own fruit to take home! 2) So this summer has promised legendary movies for our generation! (The Aveng-ers, The Dark Knight, Brave, maybe even Madagascar 3) One of my favorite ways to get out with my friends is to go see a movie together and bond while being terrified in a scary movie or even laughing our butts off watching a silly comedy that reminds us of our childhood or a vintage movie at the State. Although this is a great way to have fun, it can be expensive. Dooduuhhduuh! There is the $5 Dollar Movie Night at Regal

Cinemas on McHenry for all your cinemat-ic needs! Every Tuesday night, the theater sells movie tickets for only $5! It’s a perfect date night on a tight budget or even just a night out with pals; the movies have always been an essential part of our childhood. 3) Get creative! During summer many cre-ative ideas can be implemented and here are a few that could be put to use during the mid-July blues: Bare walls? Take a simple canvas or sheet of poster paper and splatter paint/get whimsical and  design a new centerpiece for the walls of your bedroom or space to make it your own! This can be as detailed as a portrait of you and your family or can be as simple as lines and splatters of paint all over the paper. I know that sometimes when we’re growing up we leave the paint-ing and creativity only to the girls in our classes, but you can ask my boyfriend, Cap, this is not always the case! I just did this project with Cap and it was fast, easy, af-fordable, and totally worth it. The new art can transform your space entirely. Want to spend your days at the beach but

aren’t old enough to drive or simply don’t have the car or gas money to get there? Although we may not have the beautiful ocean at our disposal in Modesto, there are plenty of natural settings such as Dry Creek and the Tuolumne River areas to spend the day at. Take your parents and friends out for a fancy picnic to sit by these beautiful locations and soak up the sun! Maybe you headed down to the fruit stand earlier and had many different recipes to impress them with your culinary expertise! Get a blanket, sunscreen, and a picnic basket and you’re on your way! Remember, summer is a place to relax, sit and listen to the amazing local music at the Queen Bean or Barking Dog. It’s also a time to experience the fun aspects of Modesto that we might overlook during the passing school years, so get out there and get ex-ploring!!It’s All Skate time! 7/6 Roller Rink in the Village, 6-9pm BYOS - bring your own skates. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the music. Greatmusic by The Quake DJJoin KHOP’s Ian Riley for games and contests

Summer weather draws people outdoors to enjoy sunshine, outdoor activities and occasions that bring family and friends together. Here are a few tips to enjoy our wonderful Modesto:• Summer should be enjoyed, so why rush? The faster you move the more your body heats, especially in warm weather. • Plan outdoor activities for cooler early morning hours, look for shaded areas in mid-day and be sure air conditioning is in good order. • Ice cream, popsicles, cold juicy fruits and other cold treats are wonderful on a warm day. Also, drink plenty of water, juice and sports drinks while avoiding caffeine. • Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothes, a wide-brimmed hat and wear U/V skin pro-tection.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion which include fatigue, weakness, nausea, heavy sweating or no sweating, rapid pulse, con-fusion or fainting. And know what to do, immediately seek a cool place and drink cool water or juice. Apply cool compresses and call for medical assistance if necessary. Modesto View is packed with summer ac-tivities, so lets get out and enjoy our Sum-mer.

For women, children and men whose lives have been impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault, there’s a safe haven to which they can turn: Haven Women’s Center of Stanislaus County. Here they fi nd support, as well as education and advocacy, and a chance to regain their footing during a diffi cult time in their lives. Compassionate care is integral to the ser-vices that Haven off ers, including one-on-one and group counseling. Th ere is also an emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis line with trauma response and law enforcement as-sistance and legal services for temporary restraining orders. Haven provides edu-cation, outreach and violence prevention along with youth programs for children and teens. Executive Director, Belinda Rolicheck told me, “Th e organization has served the com-munity in some form since 1977. Funding comes from county, state and federal grants

Haven Women’s Center –A Haven for Victims of Domestic Violence

along with the kindness of individual con-tributions and in-kind donations.” Rolicheck shared a recent story in which an advocate met with a sexual assault vic-tim at the offi ce. “She had been raped and expressed feeling lost, alone and unsure of what to do next. Th e advocate worked with her to get a copy of her police report so that she could fi le for a restraining order against her assailant. Th e advocate told her about the Victim-Witness program through the District Attorney’s offi ce. Th e woman was also provided support group information, food and clothing referrals. She was so thankful she came in because she felt lost before she arrived and now had a positive direction and support.” Today, Haven is working on security pro-ject at the ‘home’ (in an undisclosed loca-tion) where there is always inherent danger for the staff and clients/victims who stay there. “Costs for this project will be sig-

nifi cant.” says Rolicheck. “Haven’s board is currently securing donations of materials and labor to reduce the costs, but we still need additional resources and donations.” Bad experiences are not something that victims can just ‘forget’. Haven off ers a va-riety of supportive services, as well as a se-cure home when needed. Th eir services aid victims in crisis. While there are no easy answers, Haven Women’s Center off ers a safe place to talk through victim’s thoughts, feelings, and options.

For more information, visit www.haven-wcs.org or call 209.524.4331. 24-Hour Crisis hotline: 209.527.9942. Haven is also on Facebook at Haven Women’s Center
