The Practical Role
The quality of lighting, nowadays, is mainly determined by the

Lighting control plays a key part in today’s modern office design. Open
plan offices house many different departments all with different needs.
Computer users need good light at the desk but require low glare on
their monitors. Lighting control within a whole building can be tailored
to suit every users requirements with the possibility of every user being
able to control the luminaire above them. This gives the end user the
ability to control their own environment and thus reduce the possibility
of stress and fatigue.
Daylight patterns can be programmed to simulate the natural lighting
effects over an 8 hour period. This could help productivity in a call
centre where multiple shift patterns are worked. Interior lighting can be
monitored using constant light control giving a uniform level of lighting
throughout the day.
Many meeting rooms are not in use 24 hours per day and can therefore
benefit from automatic lighting control. Presence detection, when using
a multisensor, can ensure that energy consumption is minimised by
automatically turning the lights ON and OFF as necessary. A remote
control or control panel can offer further flexibility should the lighting
level need to be manually modified at any time. Additionally, simple
interfacing to an audio-visual system further enhances the use of the
meeting room.

THE BENEFITS...
The house lights in most cinemas are automatically activated when the
projector begins to show the current movie. This requires no
intervention from the projectionist and guarantees the lights are
dimmed to the required safety level consistently. Should an emergency
arise, a simple push button panel or a connection to the alarm system
can be used to quickly switch the lights to maximum.
Controlling costs is important in any public sector environment but
particularly in the education sector. A lighting control system can help
save energy when used in combination with presence detection in
corridors, classrooms and circulation areas. Importantly it can also
enhance the learning environment by creating the correct light levels for
study sessions that use overhead projection, whiteboards, projectors,
computers or just simple manual writing and reading tasks.
A simple lighting control system in a retail environment can transform a
standard lighting scheme into a tool to create a high level of impact,
highlight a particular product line or effectively manage all the display
lighting. With many retail operations open 24- hours-a-day, the lighting
control system could be used to control the lighting zonally so that
unused areas are dimmed at less busy times and help reduce energy /
running costs.
Warehouses rarely need full illumination on a continual basis. A
presence detection system can often provide the ideal solution,
automatically changing from a low level to a working level when
someone enters the area. A multisensor provides all the necessary
sensors to facilitate this automatic system. This can result not only in
reduced energy consumption but can also considerably improve lamp
life.
Whether using ballasts or dimmers, a single inexpensive mains cable
can be used. To further reduce installation costs it is not necessary to
daisy chain the connections through every fitting, as the cabling can be
spur connected to any point.
Using ceiling-mounted PIR sensors lights will switch off when the room
is unoccupied after a programmable time delay. This ensures maximum
energy efficiency and offers extended lamp life. Additionally a constant
light facility can be used, where appropriate, to provide increased
energy efficiency.
Monitoring the dimming system remotely enables the maintenance
engineers to have much greater control of the complete system
including lamp functionality and lamp life.
System configuration changes can be easily made, should the need
arise, by re-programming without the need for rewiring. This provides
the user with a highly flexible control system.

If a proper earth connection is available, Class I luminaires are
applied. However, when no earth connection, or only a poor
quality earth connection is available, or where eddy currents are
present, Class II luminaires shall be applied.
The light technical data has not been provided in this catalogue.
However, full photometric data for the entire range of luminaires is
available on a CD-ROM. For functional lighting design and
calculation, tools like the utilisation factor table, a quantity
estimation diagram for quick design, Unified Glare Rating (UGR)
information (reflected), are available on request .
Three types of templates are available, containing all relevant
photometric data, depending on the type of luminaires and its
application.
*Beam characteristics - Type of beam
For each luminaire / lamp combination a general impression of the
light beam can be provided.
The polar intensity diagram provides a rough idea of the shape of
the light distribution of a luminaire. In the polar intensity diagram
the luminous intensity is given in the form of a polar diagram. The
luminous intensity is given in candela per 1000 lumen (cd/1000
lm) of the normal lamp flux of the lamps applied.

Introduction
Electrical Safety Classes
Quality lighting is the single most important factor that affects
productivity and employee comfort in the office environment. All
vision requires light and the quality, direction and diffusion of the
light are all important in determining how well one sees.
In this section, wide range of Modern Workspace Luminaires for
different applications are described along with the product
photograph, line diagram, specification, electrical data,
dimensional data and typical installation photograph, enabling the
customer to select the right luminaire. Photometric data of each
luminaire with different lamps and the lighting control categories
are available on request.
The comprehensive range of Modern Workspace Luminaires are
specially designed to meet all types of lighting requirements of
offices, commercial establishments and decorative interiors.
Besides providing comfortable, glare-free working ambience, the
luminaires offer a choice of attachments, mirror-like reflectors
designed for use with different type and wattage of fluorescent
lamps. The mirrors are made of high purity anodized aluminum
with multiple facets to provide wide spread batwing light
distribution, for enhanced economy through wider spacing
possibilities.
Electrical equipment is classified for protection against electrical
shock. In normal operation as well as during service and
maintenance, luminaires should be protected against electrical
shock. The safety of a luminaire depends on electrical, mechanical
and thermal aspects; both under normal and fault conditions.
The electrical safety classification drawn up by the IEC embraces
four luminaire classes; Class 0, I, II and III. The table given below
gives a brief description of each electrical safety class. The official
definitions are too long to be reproduced in full here, but can be
summarised as printed below.

In the vertical plane through the length
axis of the luminaire, the so called C90 -
C270 plane is indicated as:

If the light distribution of a luminaire is
symmetrical, like downlights, spots and
industrial highbay luminaires, the light
distribution in only one C-plane is given. Note
that for asymmetrical light distribution two planes
are not sufficient for calculation purposes. Yet in the polar
intensity diagram, only two planes will be given as internationally
accepted.
Bajaj Commercial/Decorative Luminaires can be installed as
pendent, surface or recessed to false ceiling, depending on
individual requirement. Luminaire dimensions are made matching
with a variety of false ceiling panel dimensions viz. Luxalon Ceiling,
Armstrong Ceiling, Supersil Ceiling etc. in addition to the standard
false ceiling made of plaster of paris or with gypsum board.
Luxalon aluminium linear ceilings are
available in two types, viz. Type 84R and Type 84C. In both
the varieties the panel width is 84 mm with a gap of 16 mm
between the panels but the major difference is in the fixing
arrangement and in the depth of the panels. Depth of Type
84R is 16 mm and that of Type 84C is 12.5 mm.
Armstrong mineral fibre acoustical ceilings
are available in different textures in square modular size 600 x
600 mm or in rectangular size 600 x 1200 mm with depth
varying between 15 mm to 19 mm.
Supersil ceilings are made of stove
enamelled or epoxy powder coated perforated aluminium
panels in standard colours which are clipped on to special
carrier profiles and are of dimension 265 mm x 1250 mm.
Glare control and categorisation is one of the most important
parameters of indoor lighting luminaires and awareness of the
same is increasing. In Europe the CIBSE Lighting Guide 3 and the
DIN 5035 (Part 7) clearly define the performance a luminaire must
provide throughout its operational life to enable the lighting
installation to comply with its directive. The different lighting
control categories are illustrated in Table 1.
To ensure that safe luminance limits are selected for more onerous
tasks being performed in a space, three standard display screen
luminaire types have been defined, each with a different
luminance limit angle. The luminaires so derived are referred aszz

Category 1, 2 or 3. These have luminance limitation at and above 0 0 055 , 65 and 75 respectively to the downward vertical. In general,
the greater the density of display screens in an area, the greater
the intensity of use and the more critical the errors, then the lower
the luminance limit should be, i.e a smaller category number. It
must be emphasized that category 1 is not better than Category 2,
nor Category 2 better than Category 3. The correct category
should be selected, where the luminance will not rise above a
limiting value.
For category 1 luminaires the
calculated luminance is limited to 2200cd/m or less, at and above
055 to the downward vertical at
all angles of azimuth. Such
luminaires would be specified for
screens containing safety-critical
or similar information where
errors have serious consequences. They may also be required in
areas where there is a high density of screens and display screen
usage is of an intensive nature or sustained over long periods.
For category 2 luminaires the calculated luminance is limited to 2 0200cd/m or less, at and above 65 to the downward vertical
when viewed from all angles of azimuth. This category of
luminaire should be used in an interior for which fairly wide spread
use of display screens are intended. This could include areas
where there is one terminal per desk for general usage or a few
terminals used continuously.
This is the greatest relaxation of the luminance limiting angle that
can be recommended for areas where display screens may be 2used. The calculated luminance is limited to 200cd/m or less, at
0and above 75 to the downward vertical when viewed from all
angles of azimuth.
Lighting requirements according to DIN 66234 contains the
recommendations for the ergonomic aspects of VDU workplaces.
Because of the high demands on operators, the technicalities of
lighting for VDU workplaces are subject to special requirements.

The related illuminance level must result in lighting which satisfies
the conflicting requirements. The illuminance must be high
enough to facilitate the recognition and reading of the text without
visual fatigue but not so high as to lead to a reduction in contrast
between the text and its background.
A nominal illuminance of E avg = 500 lux fulfills this requirement.

This brings the danger that luminaires are reflected in the screen
and contribute to a reduction in contrast between text and

The majority of offices
which contain VDU
workplaces belong to the

usually alternate with
VDU work. There are also
offices where only VDU
work is carried out.
It is therefore practical to arrange the lighting so that it is for
economical and technical reasons suitable for:
� Mainly mixed workplaces
� Exclusively VDU work
For mixed workplaces it is typical that reading and writing tasks
alternate with VDU work in the course of the working day. The
assumption that the mixed workplaces and VDU workplaces are
arranged at random, without consideration of the luminaire positionsoand the VDU can be lifted to a maximum of 15 upward from the
horizontal, darklight luminaires should be used. These luminaires haveO2a limiting luminance of 200 cd/m for cut-off angles above 60 to the
Overtical and create no reduction in contrast rendering upto 15 on the
tilted VDU screen.
The advantage with this lighting is that a higher Contrast Rendering
Factor is achieved which eases the task of reading and writing.

Lighting for mixed workplaces
Suitable Bajaj Mirror Optics luminaires are BJLM, BMMR, BJRM etc.
Data input, word processing, graphic designing are typical VDU tasks.
Should a variation in the ergonomic aspect of the workplace be
possible without consideration to the position of the luminaires, then,obecause of the possibility of tilting the VDU screen upto 20 to the
2vertical, luminaires with a limiting luminance 200cd/m for cut-offO
angles above 50 to the vertical can be used. This concerns at least
those luminaires which can be seen on the screen. The luminaires
used are mainly narrow beam and therefore a deterioration of CRF
(Contrast Rendering Factor) is unavoidable. These luminaires also
have an inferior Utilisation Factor.
Suitable Bajaj darklight luminaires are BJDL, BJDLA, BTMRA etc.
In order to prepare a number of alternate and accurate illumination
designs within a short period of time and thereafter to have the most
economic & optimum design the present day designers / users use the
help of a computer instead of working out manually. For computer
aided designs the preliminary steps are identical as in the
conventional methods of calculation except that final computation is
done by the help of a computer.
For computer aided designs which require exhaustive photometric
data of the luminaires, the results are obtained with the help of
