Researchers at the University of

Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have

developed a new lithium-ion battery

technology that is 2,000 times more

powerful than comparable batteries.

According to the researchers, this is

not simply an evolutionary step in

battery tech, Its a new enabling technology it breaks the normal paradigms of energy

sources. Its allowing us to do different, new things.

Currently, energy storage is all about trade-offs. You can have lots of power (watts), or lots

of energy (watt-hours), but you cant generally have both. Supercapacitors can release a

massive amount of power, but only for a few seconds; fuel cells can store a vast amount of

energy, but are limited in their peak power output. This a problem because most modern

applications of bleeding-edge tech smartphones, wearable computers, electric vehicles

require large amounts of power and energy. Lithium-ion batteries are currently the best

solution for high-power-and-energy applications, but even the best li-ion battery designs

demand that industrial designers and electronic engineers make serious trade-offs when

creating a new device.

Which brings us neatly onto the University of Illinois battery, which has a higher power

density than a supercapacitor, and yet comparable energy density to current nickel-zinc

and lithium-ion batteries. According to the universitys press release, this new battery could

allow for wireless devices to transmit their signals 30 times farther or, perhaps more

usefully, be equipped with a battery thats 30 times smaller. If that wasnt enough, this new

battery is rechargeable and can be charged 1,000 times faster than conventional li-ion

batteries. In short, this is a dream battery. (See: DoE calls for a chemical battery with 5x

These huge advances stem from a brand new cathode and anode structure, pioneered by

the University of Illinois researchers. In essence, a standard li-ion battery normally has asolid, two-dimensional anode made of graphite and a cathode made of a lithium salt. The

new Illinois battery, on the other hand, has a porous, three-dimensional anode and cathode.

To create this new electrode structure, the researchers build up a structure of polystyrene

(Styrofoam) on a glass substrate, electrodeposit nickel onto the polystyrene, and then

electrodeposit nickel-tin onto the anode and manganese dioxide onto the cathode. The

diagram above does a good job of explaining the process.

The end result is that these porous electrodes have a massive surface area, allowing for

more chemical reactions to take place in a given space, ultimately providing a massive

boost to discharge speed (power output) and charging. So far, the researchers have used

this tech to create a button-sized microbattery, and you can see in the graph below how

well their battery compares to a conventional Sony CR1620 button cell. The energy density

is slightly lower, but the power density is 2,000 times greater. On the opposite end of the

bleeding-edge spectrum increased energy density, but lower power density then

IBMs lithium-air battery currently leads the pack.

In real-world use, this tech will probably be used to equip consumer devices with batteries

that are much smaller and lighter imagine a smartphone with a battery the thickness of a

credit card, which can be recharged in a few seconds. There will also be plenty of

applications outside the consumer space, in high-powered settings such as lasers and

medical devices, and other areas that normally use supercapacitors, such as Formula 1 cars

and fast-recharge power tools. For this to occur, though, the University of Illinois will first

have to prove that their technology scales to larger battery sizes, and that the production

process isnt prohibitively expensive for commercial production. Heres hoping.

The problem is that, like this article, they are ridiculously over-hyped, and end up only

being incremental improvements.

Because for consumer electronics, and even battery powered cars, we don't really need

more power availability, we need higher energy density, which this tech is a lot shorter on.

This article sounds weird. It only makes sense to me if the author made a mistake.

A battery like this and 30 times smaller than a normal mobile device battery would last for about

30 times less time than a comparable normal battery. It seems to me that the advance here it's

not in theenergy density but in the amount of power that the battery can provide at request. If

that's the case, then, mobile devices are not a target market, because, I believe, nobody would

want to have to recharge their device several times a day.

missed anything I read it again. In the end i got exactly the same idea as before.

Actually, in the article it says "...University of Illinois battery, which has a higher

power density than a supercapacitor, and yet comparable energy density to current

nickel-zinc and lithium-ion batteries...". Energy density means "amount of energy by

mass of material". If you divide the amount of material by thir ty you will end up with a

amount of energy that it is also 1/30 of the initial amount.

If i'm wrong, p lease correct me.

Your definition is correct, but the text says "...University of Illinois battery,

that for a specific volume/size a battery using this technology has the same (a

little less) energy density as a lithium-ion battery. We are talking about volume

here. If you reduce the volume (size if you prefer), then the amount of energy

goes down in the same proportion. In other words: If you cut the battery size

to 1/30 you end up with 1/30 of the energy.

pretty much correct. This article lays out the data in a misleading manner. One

reason that you may end up with a smaller battery pack in a phone is that the

phone requires a higher discharge rate than a thinner cell could provide, so the

thicker cell is needed. You can compare two 1000mAh LiPo batteries on a site like

Sparkfun and the thinner single cell only has a discharge rate of 2C, while the much

Household wiring in the US is 120 volts

So, even if you draw the full 15 amps @ 120 volts (= 1800 watts), it'll take at least

190 seconds to charge a modern laptop battery - and that's in the absolute BEST

case circumstances. I don't even want to think about how much heat a 1800w power

supply would emit. (most laptop powersupplies are designed to deliver no more

than about 20 watts)

really? most are 60-90 watts. The laptop I am using to write this has

170W brick and does require it to be able to charge while under full load.

you are correct though, A watt-second is better known as a Joule, so we can

figure that a 15A outlet can provide 6,480,000 joules in one hours time. for

reference a 100W incandescent light bulb pulls 360,000 joules in one hour.

so 342000/6480000=0.05277 or 3.1662 minutes/190 seconds. The rest of the

world on the other hand, uses 220-230 Volts to they can charge in half the

time. America should really move to a 240 volt system.

and honestly, would you bitch if you could recharge your macbook in 5 mins

or less (accounting for reasonable inefficiencies) from dead to 100% even if

you had to turn the coffee pot off to do it?

Ti m 2 days agoIt's great that research is being done to advance this tech, but we've been hearing

about new advancements for years and none of the technologies have made it into consumer

electronics. University research funded by federal grants should have to be shared with other

universities that are similarly funded. Then, rather than competing research being done on

incompatible technologies we could have some collaboration on a single technology that has a

chance of actually being produced. It's the same with solar power. Every couple of months we

hear X University has boosted solar efficiency by Y%..but where is this tech?

Look at the engine technology made in space travel. Hard to believe; but we are

using the same technology of the "V" rocket back in the 1940s today! No advancements

made on this front. In the 1950s they were experimenting with atomic engines that would

last 20 years and travel at 100K per hour. In the 1960s; they said that an ion engine

would be ready in 20-30 years that would last 50 years and go close to the speed of light

set up for interstellar travel!

and nothing else. If there were something to it; Apple or Samsung would of monopolized it by

Remember the scientists that claim they tested "cold fusion" and it works. I

believe they made the cover of time magazine for being "Person of the year".

Afterwards; they could get the water to turn into energy after all! I think one was a

professor in a college in Arizona or New Mexico.

No timeline because you obviously don't understand research. Theory-

>experiments-> scientific comunity verifies experiments-> then scientific comunity

experiments with cheaper ways of providing the experiment. It costs hundreds of

thousands sometimes millions of dollars to produce these experiments and it takes timefor other scientists to develop cheaper methods of running said experiments and mass

producing it to be fiscally plausible to sell..

The really exciting news here is the potential charge rate. Imagine charging a cell

phone in 60 seconds, or charging an electric car in the same time it would take to fill a gas

tank.

On the graph, the colored dots represent the researchers batteries. The A123 is a

commercially available battery (recently acquired in a controversial takeover by a Chinese

company.) I don't see the IBM lithium air represented at all on the chart.

Anyway, it doesn't look like these batteries are as good as the lithium iron phosphate

(LiFePO4) batteries from A123 so I don't get what is so exciting. Do we really need higher

power density than current battery technology with less energy density? I don't know what

application that would be. Perhaps it is the fact that they can be charged faster? That is useful

for electric car batteries.

If it doesn't have higher energy density then if you made it thinner it would still just last

shorter time. Not even the same time as before. You would just get a faster battery. I can't see

the point really. Call me when you have higher energy density than lithium-air ;)1
