RESULTS

At the conclusion of each Model Expo the discussion within the committee

usually centres around those aspects of the event that were a success, the lessons learned over the three days and what needs to be done to ensure the following year’s event is even more successful. However, in the lead up to Model Expo 2011 the committee was faced a number of challenges due mainly to the Global Financial Crisis and the affects this was having on the retail industry as well as consumer confidence.v

Despite these initial concerns though, MoDel expo once again proveD to be as popularity as ever anD attracteD in excess of 600 entries, in the 69 coMpetition categories froM 280 coMpetitors, Many of whoM haD travelleD the length of the country as well as the tasMan (nZ) to attenD, which for soMe is a significant unDertaking.

public attenDance over the three Days was also up on previous years – in excess 6000 plus – with the nuMber of faMilies passing through the Doors being very Much in eviDence, particularly on the sunDay anD MonDay. both the public anD MoDellers alike were treateD to a feast of MoDelling talent anD with More than 30 inDiviDual traDers in attenDance, this ensureD that there was plenty on offer to teMpt the shoppers to open their wallets anD part with their harD earneD Dollars. a note worthy new coMer to the event this year was schreiber carD MoDels, who openeD up a whole new DiMension in scale MoDelling anD attracteD a lot of interest.

the stanD out coMpetition categories for 2011 were sci-fi, figures, busts, ships, DioraMas anD the newly createD Mech/gunDaM category, all attracting

a large nuMber of entries Many of which were to a very high stanDarD. the coMpetition was particularly fierce in the figure, bust anD DioraMa categories, anD aDaM lehMann collecteD the well DeserveD ‘people’s choice’ awarD for his ‘operation catalyst’ DioraMa, which DepicteD a scene of australia’s involveMent in the iraq war in 2006. also of note was the large nuMber of Junior entries, soMething not seen for a nuMber of years, which hopefully is a positive sign that will continue into the future. on the DownsiDe though was the noticeable Drop in the nuMber of interMeDiate entries as well as a lack of entries in soMe of the senior categories, which seeMs to be a coMMon trenD aMongst Many coMpetitions of late.

13 clubs – both local anD interstate – also participateD in the event, each putting on a theMeD club Display anD coMpeting for the Much coveteD ‘best club Display’ awarD. the boys froM s.p.a.s.M. eventually won this, with their ‘the away teaM’’ Display, which was a fitting celebration of raaf service abroaD. ipMs australia collecteD the well DeserveD ‘wow factor’ awarD for their ‘superbowl’ Display, which attracteD a lot of attention for their Many unique anD huMorous creations.

overall, MoDel expo 2011 was a resounDing success thanks to the DeDicateD banD of volunteers who ensureD that every aspects of the show ran as sMoothly as possible, for the entire three Days.

planning is now well unDerway for MoDel expo 2012 anD i hope to see you all once again, on the long-weekenD of 9-11 June - queens birthDay - in 2012.

Dear Model Expo competition entrant and fellow modeller,

Thank you for making Model Expo 2011 such a wonderful success. This year’s event attracted a good number of entries and more visitors than at any time throughout it’s 28 year history.

Model Expo is a joint initiative of model clubs across Australia. It provides a unique opportunity for modellers and enthusiasts of all interests and skill levels to share their ideas, knowledge and enjoyment of plastic and scale modelling. The Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships provide a wonderful spectacle for the wider community to learn more about the art of modelling and how they can participate in this most interesting hobby.

Model Expo 2012 is fast approaching and should be the events biggest and brightest yet. Following on from the success of this year, Model Expo 2012 will benefit greatly from increased participation of clubs, the model industry and sponsors.

The vision and mission provides a framework, that will ensure the ongoing success of Model Expo and the Australian Open Plastic and Scale Modelling Championships for many years to come.

The mission: Model Expo’s mission is to create a greater awareness among the wider and modelling community of the benefits and opportunities provided by plastic and scale modelling.

through a major national event that: • provides a greater recognition of the opportunities (professional and recreational) provided by plastic and scale modelling • provides a competition for the widest variety of plastic and scale model categories • provides recognition of the skills and talents of individual modellers and clubs by the modelling and wider community • Provides the opportunity for plastic and scale modelling to be recognised as part of the wider arts community, and • provides the opportunity for participation and enjoyment by model club members, individuals and visitors

Model Expo 2012 will be held at the Sandown Exhibition Centre, June 9-10, so bring your friends and join us in making Model Expo 2012 a great success for modellers, clubs, sponsors and visitors alike.

WHAT IS MODEL EXPO 2012?Model Expo 2012 is a showcase of everything that encompasses plastic modelling. A national open plastic model competition is conducted during the Expo and covers all categories including aircraft, military models, cars, trucks and sci-fi. Junior and intermediate modellers are also catered for. Kit distributors and retailers will show latest releases along with model club displays.
