Modeling Process Demos
• About 1/4 of our class time (end of each day) will be spent with me showing you models I have made in the past and walking you through the (admittedly crazy and over-engineered) process I used– If this gets too boring, I can “scale” it back and end earlier each day
• To become a master modeler like me, you need to learn: – Concept of scale – get it right at the very beginning– Concepts for 3D visualization of what you want to model– Converting a 3D visualization into a buildable plan on paper– Project planning and design techniques– Know your building materials (wood, clay, LEGOs, cardboard, etc.) !!– Keeping it fun - how not to get overwhelmed & stressed out

Careers in Model Making
• Movies – special effects models• Engineering – models of products like aircraft / cars • Architecture – models of buildings being designed• Energy / Chemical Industry – process models• Medicine / Science – biological systems models,
molecular structures• Many others !• All of these use traditional “physical” models as well
as “virtual” models with computer modeling and animation

Mr. Eric’s Crazy Model Process Demos – Jefferson Book Stand
• Model / Replica 1: Jefferson Book Stand– Full size reproduction of Thomas
Jefferson’s rotating book stand fromMonticello (Cabinet room)
– I made this for a pastor friend tohold up to five books at a time for his sermon preparation
– It plays a role in my bookseries, so the cartoucheis just a photoshop formy books and NOTon the real model
– I used power toolsbut tried to match theoriginal design as closely as I could –it was challenging !!

Mr. Eric’s Crazy Model Demos-T1029 Neckerchief Slides
• Model 2/3: T1029 Patrol Neckerchief slides– The T1029 White Tigers
and Platypus Patrols wanted slides to match their Patrol patches (we haven’t painted these yet)
– For these, I used layersinstead of carving from a solid piece of wood
– To mass-produce these,I use double-sided tapeto cut a stack of three to four parts on the scroll saw in one pass
– Scouts are still decidingon paint colors / finish

Mr. Eric’s Crazy Model Demos-Stranger Things Neckerchief Slide
• Model 4: Stranger Things Neckerchief slide– Amelia, a T1029 Scout, asked me to make a
Stranger Things neckerchief slide, so this is what I came up with – Elle’s favorite - an Eggo waffle and her 011 tattoo
– For these, I used layers instead of carving from a solid piece of wood: back, waffle cutouts, and tattoo numbers
– The tattoo numbers were HARD to attach and align,so I used pegs made from staples
– I had to angle carve the waffle cutout edges by hand with an Xacto knife, did not look right without the edges
– I spray painted the whole thing yellow, hand painted the numbers, and then used a gloss spray coat to finish it off and make it shiny

Mr. Eric’s Crazy Model Demos-“The Child” Neckerchief Slide
• Model 5: The Child Neckerchief slide– I helped Emily, a T1029 Scout, to
make a The Child (a.k.a. incorrectly as Baby Yoda) neckerchief slide for her custom Woodwork Merit Badge project
– She sent me her design drawing and I converted it to layers to make it into a slide
– Emily spray painted the whole slide brown, hand painted the details, and then used a gloss spray coat to finish it off and make it shiny
– Emily made three – one for herself, one forher ASM mom, and one for me !! Yay!! Note: Her poor dad and Eagle Scout brother were both left out !
