Use of the tracker

How does Capturs work?

Functioning set up

Connected Mode Data from GPS, alerts, and other information (temperature, battery, accelerometer) is transmitted through Sigfox network. This information is accessible and can be shared on Capturs web interface. This mode needs a Capturs subscription. The data sent by Sigfox network can be received only if the area is under Sigfox network coverage which is given on http://www.sigfox.com/coverage.

Logger Mode Records GPS data and other information in the internal memory of the tracker (the logger). The user can then download the data offline on PC/Mac, export it, and collect the positions that were not sent through the Sigfox network to have a more precise path. The logger can function without Sigfox network, everywhere in the world where GPS works.

Those two modes are independent and work simultaneously, communicating to offer the best user experience.

Note: You can use Capturs space online with or without a Capturs subscription. If you do not have subscription, the data on the logger will be automatically transferred to the Capturs space, but you will not be able to use the real-time tracking, alerts and the button.

GPS tracking modes: Two GPS tracking modes are used (in the connected mode as well as in the logger) :

Navigation Mode o Send the current position and two intermediary positions every 10 min through

Sigfox. o Record in the logger the current position and several intermediary positions, based

on the interval set up by the user (min. 20s intervals). o Record in the logger the speed. o Record in the logger the altitude.

3D Mode

o Send the current position and one intermediary position through Sigfox. o Send the current altitude through Sigfox. o Send the current speed through Sigfox. o Record in the logger the current position and several intermediary positions, based

on the interval set up by the user (min. 20s intervals).

Sigfox connectivity Your tracker is delivered with one year of Sigfox and Capturs connectivity included and activated. Subscription renewal will be on Capturs space at the end of the initial one-year term. If you do not renew it you will be able to keep using the logger mode, but the Connected mode will not be active.

Activation of Capturs tracker

Turn on your tracker

1. 1 press on the button. 2. The blue LED blinks 1x, green LED stays 2 seconds, red and blue blink 4x.

The tracker is now operational in the Navigation Mode.

Turn off your tracker The Capturs tracker does not send signals and stays in standby if it does not move. However, in some cases (battery saving, travel in plane, discretion) you will want to stop tracking. You just have to turn it off following this procedure:

1. Hold the button for 5 seconds. 2. Blue LED blinks 1x, red LED stays 2 seconds, the green one and blue one blink 4x.

Page 18: MODEL A Radio-Tracker GPS / SIGFOX® User Manual · 3 Capturs® – Model A User manual – V1[EN] © Capturs 2017 Sigfox messages..... 19

18 Capturs® – Model A User manual – V1[EN] © Capturs 2017

Navigation Mode The tracker has a motion detector (accelerometer). As soon as movement is detected, it tries to get the GPS position and send it through the Sigfox network (minimum 10 min). The position and the path are then transmitted in a few seconds on the Internet and can be seen on your Capturs space on http://connect.capturs.com and on the pages you have shared. You just have to wear the tracker on you to keep emitting real-time location points and to be followed, nothing else. At the same time, the positions are recorded in the logger within the interval you have set through Capturs space. This recording is fully independent from the network and from the Sigfox subscription, and works everywhere in the world where GPS works.

3D Mode

3D mode functioning is like navigation mode but the information on intermediary position are not sent preferring altitude and speed.

Acquisition of GPS positions When moving, the GPS works in regular intervals. You can define this interval on the Capturs application in the set up « Interval between GPS positions ». GPS data are recorded in the logger and uploaded on PC application, then exported to your Capturs space. Every time the tracker has to acquire a GPS position, the green or red LED will blink once to indicated success of failure. You will see the green and red LED appear in regular intervals, the time to acquire a signal can vary with exterior conditions.

GPS acquisition success

GPS acquisition failure

Important advice: GPS is a sensitive technology. Indoor GPS cannot work. When it has not been used outside for more than 4 hours, the first acquisition will take longer. You should do it without moving because when moving it will take even longer. Before going out, you should stay still outside for 5 minutes.

Sigfox messages If it is in Sigfox network area, the tracker will send some Sigfox messages automatically, as set by the user (by default the GPS position from Navigation or 3D modes, 1 message every 10 min), or when the user performs the following actions:

Tracker activation Tracker stopped Press on button Movement stopped after 3 min (accelerometer) Movement detection (accelerometer) Low battery Keepalive Hard Reset

In all cases, a sent message will be indicated by the fix blue LED during a variable time. At the same time, the Sigfox radio emitter will be functioning.

Button use and messages sent Capturs allows 5 types of messages, one of which has acknowledgement of receipt (alert message). The current GPS position is automatically sent with the other messages and battery level. Those messages are initiated at any time by pressing the button, and will send a personalized email to chosen addressees on your Capturs space.

Important: Pressing the button, even the alert button, does not send information to a safety service or an official organisation ( Police, Fire department). Only the person you have chosen on your Capturs space will receive an alert by email. SPAMS: Those emails can get caught in spam filters. In this case, the contact person will not receive the alerts. You should test this function before going out.

Types of messages 5 types of messages can be set up.

1 short click: one single press on the button 1 long click: one press on the button held for 2 seconds 2 clicks: 2 presses on the button (0.5 second between each press). 3 clicks: 3 presses on the button (0.5 second between each press) : message with

acknowledgement of receipt. Sigfox will try to send another message to the tracker to signal that the alert had been received. The user is informed through the LED blinking.

4 clicks : 4 presses Once the button was pressed, the blue LED will blink to confirm what kind of message had been sent.

1 click on button ●Blink 1X and send Sigfox message 2 clicks ●Blink 2X and send Sigfox message 3 clicks ●Blink 3X and send Sigfox message and blink during 1

Motion stop If the tracker doesn’t move for 3 minutes, it will stop emitting and will indicate the GPS position. You will see also the blue LED turn on 3 minutes after it has stopped moving. This stop is indicated on Capturs space. You can also create an email alert for when the tracker is not moving anymore.

Resuming movement As soon as movement is detected after not moving for more than 3 minutes, the tracker will send a signal of movement. A Sigfox message will send a signal indicating the movement and the GPS position. You will see the blue LED turning on when the tracker is moving. The movement is indicated on Capturs space. You can also create an email alert that will send when the tracker is moving again.

Broadcast Mode Available soon.

Temperature monitoring Your trackers has a temperature sensor. The temperature is sent in some messages (press button, keepalive, activation/inactivation of the tracker). It will be visible on Capturs space.

Battery Monitoring The tracker regularly measure the battery level. It is sent in some messages (press button, keepalive, activation/inactivation of the tracker). You can receive a low battery alert by email. Go on your Capturs space to set up this function. Otherwise, the tracker indicates the low battery level when the green and red LED blink simultaneously 2 times per minute when the tracker is moving.

Keepalive Except when the tracker is turned off, it will send a Sigfox message every day with some parameters of the tracker, such as battery, to confirm that it is still active.

Emission limits on Sigfox/ETSI network Uplink The number of signals sent every day is limited to 140 messages per day, which corresponds to one message every 10 min during 24h. In order to respect the current legislation, you cannot overcome this maximum of 140 messages per day. This quota includes pressing on button. Downlink Capturs uses the functionality « Downlink » (servers communicate with the tracker) to try to establish an acknowledgement of receipt for a 3 clicks alert message. The daily limit is 4 messages. If you do not want to send your position anymore, you just have to turn off your tracker as indicated in the chapter “turn off your tracker.” In case of abuse, additional costs could be applied. The user must comply with the current European rules defined by ETSI directives. Go on ETSI website to know regulations relative to radio signal emissions on bandwidth ISM 868 MhZ. Capturs SAS is not responsible for Sigfox radio emission misuse by the user.

To collect and export a recorded path (Logger) Positions recorded in the tracker are independent from positions sent through the Sigfox network. It has a double role.

To collect the path with GPX format (other format available soon) so that it can be used on other platforms (Strava, Garmin connect …)

To improve your path’s quality by adding positions to the path sent through the Sigfox network on Capturs space.

Path export from the logger The Path menu enables you to collect tracks recorded in the logger. Positions are recorded at the interval you set up on your Capturs space. By default, the path appears in totality. You can select an interval (time and date) in the settings Begin and End. The selected segment appears in green. Click on download GPX to export the selected segment. You can delete the path recorded in the tracking by going in the menu update.

To send the path from the logger to your Capturs space If your computer is connected to the Internet, you have nothing to do, your path is automatically sent to your Capturs space. You can have access on http://connect.capturs.com. Data sent through Sigfox network will be improved by data recorded on the tracker.

How to set up your tracker In the “Settings” menu, you can: 3D Mode: activate or deactivate the 3D mode (altitude and speed vs intermediaries positions in the navigation mode). Interval between messages: Set up the interval to send on Sigfox network (minimum 10 min). Interval between GPS positions: Set up the interval to record the positions in the logger (minimum 20 sec). Motion sensitivity: Set up the accelerometer sensitivity, which detects movement.

Important note: Those settings have an impact on the tracker’s autonomy. It has to be set up according your use. Reduce the interval between GPS position will considerably decrease the battery life.

Advice for better use The tracker can be used in an omnidirectional way and had good results during several emission tests. Nevertheless, optimal performance will be assured by properly positioning the tracker. Not respecting positioning advice can cause signal loss and failure of some position messages.

Metallic environment A metallic environment can disturb Sigfox’s radio and lead to signal losses. Do not use Capturs near a metallic object (a canteen).

Fix GPS When it has not worked for a while, the GPS needs to know the satellite’s position. It will automatically download data that it will keep in its memory to have its position quickly at the next fix. Also, the first fix can be longer, depending on environmental conditions. A clear environment during the first fix will improve system performance. GPS does not work inside, but Sigfox network is often operational. Information on the movement without indication on the position can be exploited in the software with total transparency for the user, improving his capabilities.

Tracker position

Vertical position (up) Put the tracker preferably with the eyelet up and the Capturs logo on the top. Do not tie the tracker with the eyelet, that will cause a swinging movement that will reduce performances. Ideally, put it in an outside pocket of your bag in the indicated position.

Horizontal position (down) Preferably, put the tracker with the Capturs logo on the top.

On someone Radio waves will perform better with fewer obstacles, which will mean better real-time performance. Ideally, you should wear it in an outside pocket of your bag in the indicated position. Avoid places where the tracker moves too much. While the tracker can also work in your pocket or backpack, the environment can have an influence. If it is in contact with something metallic it will strongly decrease the performance. The higher the tracker is held, without excessive movement or obstacles, the better the results.
