The modal that we choose depends on how certain we are about our speculation. The Modals for speculation are:must,could,may,may not,might,might not,cant,andcouldnt.We can put thesemodals of speculationinto 3 categories. We categorize them byhow certainwe are.#1) If we are very certain that something is true (95%-99%), we usemust.For example: Shemust have stolenthe cake!(PAST TENSE CERTAINTY:MODAL+have+PAST PARTICIPLE) Whoever it wasmust bea chocolate lover.(PRESENT TENSECERTAINTY:MODAL+BF)#2) If we are talking about things we believe are possibilities (30%-50%) we usecould, may, may not, might, and might not.For example: Anyonecould have takenthe cake.
