What’s this? Four teenagers from Cavan, booted, suited and surging into the well of 1960s beat/r’nb? Before you start scratching your head and wondering where the catch is and how long the novelty can last, you’ll have to under-stand one very important thing about The Strypes: these lads can play. Not only that, they can take asunder 1960s rock/ rhythm’n’blues and mid-1970s punk rock, constituent part by constituent part, and put it back together again before you notice what they’ve done.

Yes, there might be novelty here, but there’s also a strong dose of authenticity that, despite the tender age of the band-mates, comes across all too obviously. As well, it’s been many years since we’ve seen a guitarist with as much attitude as Josh McClorey, and there hasn’t been as good a bass player as Peter O’Hanlon since we last watched John Entwhistle strum his instrument like a lead guitar.

Really, says you? Really, says I. Think The Yardbirds crossed with Dr Feelgood. Expect picks to be winkled and necks to be turtled. Feel that smile landing.

Look Book Golden Globes 2013

Like so many fashion lovers around the world, I tuned in to watch the Golden Globes this week. Not only am I a big movie buff, and an admirer of many of the lead-ing male nominees, but the red carpet for this particular awards ceremony is a must see!!! I love looking at the risks taken by some of the celebs; whether they get it right or not. Of course, the awards always give us a chance to live vicariously through the A-listers, as we zoom in on their draping gowns, beautifully styled hair, glossy lipstick, and sparkling accessories. What’s not to love? I am not the big-gest fan of head-to-toe corals and oranges but these ladies keep it elegant and simple and pull it off perfectly! I love the neckline of Jennifer Lawrence’s dress, and the metallic belt which harshens the otherwise very feminine dress. Coming in close 2nd is Amanda Seyfried in this elegant laced cut out dress. This dress is effortlessly glamorous, yet classic and is complimented beautifully by Amanda’s pale skin and minimal styling. I ADORE Kate Hudson in this black and gold long-sleeved gown. The closed embellished collar is exquisite, and Kate’s simple hair and make-up let’s this dress do all the talking! The cinched waist belt gives athletic figured Kate some curves too. This is my favourite look of the night, (although I may be biased as I adore Kate as the embassador for small chested ladies showing off their

There’s a reason Leo Tolstoy’s 1877 novel has been made into a movie so many times. Yes, of course it’s classic, but Joe Wright’s 2012 Anna Karenina (out in theaters this weekend), starring Keira Knight-ley and Jude Law, is the kind of twist you’d expect from Baz Luhrmann or Danny Boyle. Wright, who previously directed Knightley in Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, reimagines the story as a highly stylized theater-set fever dream. Knightley plays the cen-tral doomed wife (she’s also recently engaged herself in real life, but that seems to be working out just fine). We talked to Knightley in New York City while she was promoting the movie about the role, romance more gener-ally, the upcoming Jack Ryan, and her favorite depressing music.ESQUIRE.COM: What was it like playing Anna? She’s pretty complex, morally.KEIRA KNIGHTLEY: I initially read the book when I was in my late teens, early 20s, and my memory of it was of Anna being a victim and almost saint-ly. Then I read it again last summer. She was not the same person. I think the one to be idolized is Levin. Anna definitely walks the line of being the anti-heroine.

ESQ: Why do you think the story still resonates?KK: Because it’s about love and not just romance or just that happy bit, not love in the way it’s all sold to us, but love as the thing that we’ve been fascinated and obsessed by for centuries. Love can be madness and joy and happiness. It looks at the whole thing. It has more questions than it has answers.ESQ: Do you relate to Anna at all?KK: I find her terrifying because I am no better than she is. I find her terrify-ing because even in the moments when I judged her the harshest I thought, Would I do any differently? Have I behaved any better? Do I know that I would behave any better? No.ESQ: And in your own love life? Are you a romantic or a realist?KK: I’m a twenty-seven-year-old wom-an, so it would be a bit strange if I had the romantic notions about relation-ships that you have when you’re in your teens. I think that love is absolutely inexplicable. It would be a bit shit of me to stand and go, “Yeah, love conquers all. It’s romance all the time.” You’d obviously go, “Bollocks!” So no, I think it’s a fascination. It’s the questions that

we can never answer. Why do we feel the way we do? Why are we attracted to those people? Why even when it’s going badly do we go back for more?ESQ: What’s your relationship to Joe Wright been like over the three films?KK: There is an amazing amount of trust, even when we have our bick-ering moments. We are quite like siblings. But there is never a question that I love him to pieces. That’s why — he said, only twelve weeks before we

were going to start shooting, “By the way, I’ve completely changed the concept.” With a lot of directors, my alarm bells would have been going off. This one, we were like, “Wicked. Let’s jump.” It’s a ballsy move.ESQ: Joe likes to play music on his sets. You’re a Leonard Cohen fan. What was playing during shooting?KK: Joe was taking a break and dancing! I was putting my own music in, normally something incredibly depressing, as he was listening to house music and dancing over

Love can be madness and joy and happiness. It looks at the whole thing. It has more questions’’
