ADVANTAGES• Uses a familiar platform• Course site members are automatically

populated• All announcements are posted on the

Welcome Tab of MoCoMotion• E-mailing one or all students is possible• Learning curve is minimal and no special

software is required.

ADVANTAGES Cont’d• Different components include: Photos, news,

calendar, chat, message board, links, files, announcements, and e-mail

• Site administration can be delegated• Members can be added or deleted manually• Easy to use and yet satisfies most faculty

requirements.• Increased communication between students and

faculty increases student satisfaction.

DISADVANTAGES• Time required to set-up the web site

• The site once created can not be brought forward to the next term.

• System does not leave much ability to change overall set-up or appearance

• File sharing is restricted by quotas.

Personal Web Site

ADVANTAGES• The Web Site can be as unique as you are

from just the very basic to quite elaborate.

• The site once created can be easily brought forward to the next term.

• File size is rarely a problem.

DISADVANTAGES• Time and skill required to set-up

• The site must be hosted on a server and the college is becoming quite restrictive on the look of these sites.

• No direct e-mail functionality.

• Students must go to your site to read announcements.

WebCT and FirstClass (FRED)

ADVANTAGES• Combines ease of set-up with increased

functionality.• Has many more advanced features such as

grading and on-line testing.• Integrated announcements and e-mail etc.• Students will soon be able to get to the site

through the MoCoMotion log-in.• Courses migrate easily to the next term.

WebCT and FirstClass (FRED)

DISADVANTAGES• More powerful and complex translates into a

larger time investment to learn the system.

• System may be too complex for faculty members needs.

• System may never be as well integrated into MoCoMotion as Course Tools.

In Summary

• Personal Web Sites – these sites are likely to become more restricted by the college and thus less common in the future.

• Course Tools – may be a good choice for some faculty members, and those just starting out with an LMS.

• WebCT and FirstClass (FRED) – ideal for power users and those who are restricted by Course Tools.
