Master Thesis:Location Based Mobile Apps

as a Tool for Marketing

The explosive development of mobile technologies changed the travel market radically in the last few years. Smart phones and their software applications became a new tool for marketing activities. In the study the author aimed to explore the potential of them in marketing strategies. The main promise of the Mobile Web is to satisfy user needs anywhere at any time, and to provide access to information and services, including location based services. The study exam-ines the location based mobile applications in tour-ism marketing; as well as their popularity on the mar-ket. The gained information was evaluated through a practical example in cooperation with the Salzburger Landestheater (contact person: Angela Beyerlein). The author developed an application prototype in order to demonstrate the results of the research. The application is only a prototype, it is not download-able,

Within this portfolio the application prototype is pre-sented for iPhone and iPad.

ABSTRACT

Mobile App / Main site

This is the opening page of the applica-tion,

During the creation of the application the au-thor used the Face-book site of the thea-tre.

Therefore anything re-freshed on the Face-book site automatically appears in the applica-tion.

Mobile App / Map -GPS

The map function shows the location of the theatre, and consist of a function to show the way to go from the current location of the visitor.

The users can use their GPS to navigate to the theatre, straight from the application.

As it turned out from the primary research, easy us-ability is essential in the design of applications.

Mobile App / Pictures section

This is the photo section of the application.

The visitors have an oppor-tunity to check out the pic-tures of the productions.

This is important in order to increase the entertainment utility of the application.

Mobile App / Facebook

The author connected the application with the Facebook page of the Landestheater.

Therefore the application consists of a function where users can connect with the social media site.

They have the possibility to ‘like’ the posts of the Salz-burger Landestheater right on the application, as well as keep updated continu-ously with their news, make comments, check –ins.

Mobile App / Twitter

Here the Twitter site of the Salzburger Landestheater can be seen.

The users are able to check out the Twitter site of the theatre, and read the com-ments of other users.

Mobile App / Contact platform

The users can call the the-atre directly form the appli-cation.

This function also helps to increase the better usability and connectivity.

Mobile App / Event Section (Linking to the on-line ticket reservation platform) This is the event section of the theatre.

Here users can see the coming events, the dates, the locations and they can have info as well if the pro-duction is already sold out or still available.

From here they can as well have a step to the maps section, to show the way to the theatre. There is also a function from here directing to the ticketing page.
