Outdoor exercise can benefit both theplanet and the people doing the ex-ercising. By exercising outdoors in-
stead of at home or at indoor fitnesscenters, men and women can reduce theircarbon footprints. Exercising in the greatoutdoors does not require the use of en-ergy-consuming fitness machines. In addi-tion, when exercising outdoors duringdaylight hours, nature provides all thelight men and women will need for theirworkouts, further reducing the averageperson’s energy consumption. And it’s notjust adults who can benefit from spendingmore time outdoors. According to the Har-vard Medical School, children are likely toget more exercise if they spend time out-doors than they are if they spend time in-doors. A study from researchers in England used GPS devices and accelerometersto track the activity of 1,000 children. The children were more than twice as activewhen they were outside than they were when they were in inside. When childrenspend ample time outdoors, that, too, can benefit the environment. According to theNational Institutes of Health, the average youngster spends three hours per daywatching television and gets as much as seven hours of screen time each day. Whenkids are outdoors, they are less likely to be staring at energy-consuming screensand devices than they are when they’re indoors.
Did you know?
Prepare a disaster kitA disaster supplies kit is simply a col-
lection of basic items your household
may need in the event of an emergency.
Try to assemble your kit well in ad-
vance of an emergency. You may have
to evacuate at a moment’s notice and
take essentials with you.
In addition to food and water, a basic
emergency supply kit should include:
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio
and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone
alert and extra batteries for both
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Whistle to signal for help
• Dust mask to help filter contaminated
air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to
shelter-in-place
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and
plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Local maps
• Cell phone with chargers, inverter or
solar charger

Alzheimer’s disease is one ofthe most prevalent types ofdementia in the world, af-
fecting an estimated 35.6 millionpeople all over the globe, and thatnumber is expected to double in20 years.
There is no cure forAlzheimer’s disease, nor is therean effective long-term way to pre-vent potential mental decline. However, that has not stopped scores of re-searchers and medical teams that continueto study the efficacy of different drugs andtherapies. The following are some of themore promising options in the works.
Leukine
A safety trial on the drug Leukine al-ready is underway at the Colorado Univer-sity Anschutz Medical Campus.
“We found so far that Leukine is safe inpeople with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr.Huntington Potter, the director ofAlzheimer’s research at the university.“That means it doesn’t have the side effectsthat so many other Alzheimer’s drugs havehad, which are swelling in the brain andbleeding into the brain.”
Leukine has been successful in removingthe plaque or amyloid along the outside ofnerve cells in the brain of mice. Researchersdo not know the exact mechanism for re-moval, but the drug is working and working
quickly. Leukine also may behelping the brain repair itself.
Insulin
Neurologists at Rush Univer-sity Medical Center are testinga type of insulin that is inhaledthrough a nasal spray to see ifit improves cognition and mem-ory function in people withmild cognitive impairment.
“There is growing evidence that insulincarries out multiple functions in the brainand that poor regulation of insulin may con-tribute to the development of Alzheimer’sdisease,” said Dr. Neelum Aggarwal, a neu-rologist at Rush and the lead investigator ofthe study.
Xanamem
Australian researchers at ActinogenMedical have begun trials of a new drugcalled Xanamem. More than 170 patientswith mild dementia in Australia, the UnitedStates and the United Kingdom will takepart in the placebo-controlled 12-week trial. The medicine blocks the stress hormonecortisol in order to improve mental functionfor those with dementias. In 2015, an Edin-burgh University study of mice showed re-ducing cortisol in the brain improved theirmemory and decreased the number ofAlzheimer’s-associated amyloid plaques inthe brain.
Treatments for Alzheimer’s disease evolve
They say it’s the hardships of lifethat form our true character. If that’strue, then Americans who were born
between the two World Wars have cer-tainly earned their character badges. Forthis, we call them the “Greatest Genera-tion”.
Because they made the world a betterplace for us, we’re committed to makingthe world a better place for them.
Honoring the Greatest Generation ispart of our mission here at Legacy Villageat Park Regency. In fact, serving this gener-ation is our mission. In carrying out thatmission, we hope to uphold the valueshanded down to us by the Greatest Genera-tion in every possible way.
Who is the Greatest Generation? You’ve probably heard the term before.
It was coined almost twenty years ago byTom Brokaw. Former anchor and manag-ing editor of the NBC News, Mr. Brokawpublished his best-selling book, The Great-est Generation, in 1998. By doing so, he for-ever set the phrase in our hearts andminds.
The phrase may be familiar, but haveyou ever stopped to wonder what makesthis group of people “The Greatest Genera-tion?”
Four Factors Contributing to theFormation of the Greatest Generation
•Momentous ChangesThis generation lived through the Great
Depression, World War II, and then on intoone of the most the prosperous eras in thehistory of our nation.
•Work EthicPerhaps because of having lived
through the Great Depression, this genera-tion knows a thing or two about workinghard. On top of that, they lived through theyears of World War II and appreciate sta-bility.
•FrugalityThe combination of living during the
Great Depression and experiencing war-time rationing means many in this genera-tion are well-versed in frugal living. Theylearned to make due. They also learnedcreativity in the face of scarcity.
•Sacrifice and HonorMany gave of themselves during World
War II, to the extent that they lost life orlimb. The war was truly all-encompassingfor this generation at that time. The Battleof the Bulge, for example, is considered bymilitary experts to be the greatest in thenation’s history.
United as a country in the face of evil,
the greatest generation came together tosacrifice what they could to make theworld a better place.
How do we, the team members ofLegacy Village at Park Regency, serve
the Greatest Generation? Each day we strive to give the residents
of Legacy Village a purposeful day. We dothis by creating an active and busy activi-ties calendar, by providing the best possi-ble care and by making our community aplace to call home.
We strive to give each of our residents asense of purpose. Finding a purpose canmean so many different things to differentpeople. It can be gardening in the court-yard, cooking brownies, singing in biblestudy or just participating in daily activi-ties. In everything we do, we aspire to cre-ate a sense of being for all residents.
The advice we like to give our residentsis to keep an open mind about everything. For the generation that elevated the art ofself-awareness and being open to change, itshouldn’t be all that difficult!
