In the gear up to the opening of Edinburgh’s only multi-arts festival dedicated to Scottish culture, traditional, Gaelic and folk arts organisers are delighted to announce more truly amazing talent to TradFest’s already packed line up of music acts and musicians. The National Collective’s “AA The Airts: Project Wish Tree” will be hosting a contemporary line up of Scottish talent including Adam Sutherland, Hamish Napier & Innes Watson (Treacherous Orchestra) plus slots by Rachel Newton & Rona Wilkie and many more. Flowers of Edinburgh returns again with a ‘who’s who’ of contemporary Scottish folk including harpist Mary MacMaster, Steve Byrne, Morag Brown and others. Rachel Newton’s show ‘Changelings’, based on a Celtic Connection New Voices commission, features Corrina Hewat & Rona Wilkie whilst Steve Byrne invites Fiona Hunter, Lucy Pringle, Siobhan Miller & Kirsty Law as part of Scott’s Songs. Taking place between April 29 and May 11 and boasting over eighty events and shows, spread across twenty six venues in Edinburgh (the hub is the Scottish Storytelling Centre), TradFest promises a hugely entertaining and enlightening programme with something for everyone including a new family-friendly strand to its programme and plenty of free events. Featuring Scottish and international music concerts, talks and debates spanning Scottish cuisine to political self determination, storytelling sessions revelling in mystical folklore, Fringe theatre, puppet shows, walking tours, visual arts, film screenings, conferences and

craft fairs, TradFest will turn Edinburgh into a hive of activity inspired by and coinciding with Beltane and May Day.

goNORTH Creative Industries Festival announces showcase acts

goNORTH has announced the list of 61 showcase artists for their 2014 creative industries festival in Inverness over the 4-5 June.

goNORTH will again connect leading industry figures with some of the most exciting new talent in the country. Organisers are also pleased to have worked with partners to bring artists from Norway, France, Sweden and Germany to Scotland’s leading creative industries festival.

‘We are delighted with the quality and diversity of our 2014 showcase list’, said Festival Director, Amanda Millen. "This year’s submission process achieved a record number of applications and it proved particularly challenging to establish the final list. We would like to thank all the artists that applied to perform and we are excited to be showcasing such a huge range of talent at this year’s festival. We will also shortly be announcing details of two fringe showcases which will take place on Tuesday 3 June."

goNORTH was launched in 2001 to provide a platform for artistes from the north of Scotland to showcase for music industry and media representatives on their own patch. Originally hosted across Aberdeen’s Belmont Street, it briefly relocated to Dundee, before settling in Scotland’s most northerly city, Inverness. Now covering a much wider remit including Screen & Broadcast, Designer Fashion and Publishing, the event has become firmly established as Scotland’s leading Creative Industries Festival.

Dip your toes into an eclectic mix of the best of Scottish music at SEALL’s Festival 1000

3 May : Isle of Skye : www.seall.co.uk

If there is one thing our Scottish islands do well it’s throw a party and on 3 May it looks like the south of Skye could be one of the places to head for if you’re up for an evening festival packed to the seams with everything from traditional ceilidh to celtic fusion to early hours DJ sets.

Aimed at a cross selection of tastes but with a strong Scottish theme, the line up features headliners ‘hypno-folkadelic ambient trad’ group Shooglenifty supported by renowned traditional Scots and Gaelic singers Fiona Hunter and Anne Martin, with sets by the Tarskavaig Blues Band, Doc Livingston and a local ceilidh band before

ending with a live DJ set into the early hours.

The festival has been put together to celebrate 1000 events by Skye promoter SEALL and with only 300 tickets on sale and an indoor/outdoor location the organisers are confident that this will be a memorable night and say they are fully prepared for a few impromptu ceilidh sessions along the way.

One of Scotland’s most well-known bands with their roots in folk, Shooglenifty, led by a hirsute Angus R Grant (a figure you won’t forget) are a supremely dexterous and witty live band and their energetic performances keep them in constant demand around the world. They are renowned for their energised, contemporary roots material and are credited with being the originators of ‘acid-croft’, a fiery and infectious blend of Celtic traditional music and dance grooves. Who better to bring a party to life. Traditional Scots singer Fiona Hunter has been singing as part of renowned folk song group Malinky for the best part of a decade. Her time with the group has seen them win many accolades including the prestigious Folk Band of the year award at the 2010 MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. Fiona has also been twice nominated in the Scots Singer of the Year category at the awards. This year she launched her first solo album. Anne Martin, is one of Scotland’s foremost Gaelic singers and comes

from Skye. She brings her own very special interpretation to many of the long sung stories and melodies of the area.

The festival runs from 5pm to 1am. Tickets are £25 for adults, £15 for students

and under 25s. Under 10s are free. www.seall.co.uk/buy-tickets/

Tickets for this year’s Tiree Music Festival have now sold out in record time - as festival organisers unveil a bigger-than-ever bill of performers. A sterling line up including Eddi Reader, Julie Fowlis, Sharon Shannon Big Band, Peatbog Faeries and Roddy Woomble & Band will perform on the Island of Tiree between 18-20 July to a 1500-strong crowd – three times the population of the island itself. News that the festival has sold out is the latest in a list of triumphs for Scotland’s ‘Best Small Festival’, which sold out of early bird tickets a starling 10 hours after they were released, forcing ticket lines to open earlier than planned. Festival organiser, Daniel Gillespie, said: “We are completely overwhelmed with the demand for this year’s festival and the fact that tickets have sold out before a complete line up has been released only highlights the incredible backing TMF has from both visitors and locals of Tiree. “With so many people spending extra days on Tiree around the festival it was a natural progression to add a 3rd day to the event. We are also very excited about introducing 2 new stages to the site that will be build on the incredible atmosphere of TMF” www.tireemusicfestival.co.uk https://twitter.com/TireeMusicFest www.facebook.com/Tiree-Music-Festival

HebCelt Will Showcase The Best Of Gaelic Talent

16-19 July : Hebrides : www.hebceltfest.com

An early Gaelic super group, one of the islands’ great musical dynasties and the recent winners of the Radio 2 Young Folk Award will help the Hebridean Celtic Festival celebrate its cultural heritage this year. The award-winning HebCelt will hold a Gaelic Showcase at An Lanntair arts centre in Stornoway over four days of the event, which runs from 16-19 July.

Among the talented performers on stage will be The Mischa MacPherson Trio, who won the Radio 2 award last month, the famous family group The Campbells of Greepe, island legends The Lochies and Friends, as well as singers Maggie MacInnes and Rachel Newton. The Lochies and Friends will play on Wednesday, 16 July.

Named after the district of Lochs in Lewis, The Lochies have been performing for over 50 years and have earned a devoted following with their music, which celebrates their Hebridean culture.

They were formed when John Macmillan – ‘Seonaidh Beag’- teamed up with his brother Angus Macmillan and Donnie ‘Gazette’ MacInnes for the 1968 Royal National Mod at Dunoon .They later performed at concerts across the country and made regular appearances at the Highlands and Islands Society of London.

On stage the following night will be The Campbells of Greepe – Caimbeulaich a’ Ghnìoba –five members of the same famous family who between them have won ten Mòd gold medals through three generations.

The group, which incorporates the name of their home crofting township in Skye, includes sister and brother Kenna and Seumas Campbell, Kenna’s daughters Mary Ann and Wilma Kennedy and her

niece Maggie Macdonald.

Friday is the turn of the Mischa MacPherson Trio, all former pupils of the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music in Plockton, who also picked up the Celtic Connections 2014 Danny Kyle Award in January.

The trio consists of singer and clarsach player Mischa, 20, from Sandwick in Lewis; guitarist and composer Innes White, 19, from Dingwall; and Conal McDonagh, 19, who was brought up in Poolewe, Wester Ross, and plays whistles and pipes. They met at Feis Ross and have since performed on the International Ceilidh Trail in 2011 and toured top UK Folk Festivals as well as international venues.

Also on stage on Friday will be Rachel Newton, from Edinburgh, who spent a lot of her youth in the north-west Highlands, attending a Gaelic medium school and was involved in the Fèis movement. She later formed the duo Rachel and Lillias, joined the Emily Portman Trio and co-founded Scots Trad Music Award nominated six-piece band The Shee.

On Saturday the showcase will feature singer and clàrsach player Maggie MacInnes, who was born in Glasgow but comes from a long line of Gaelic singers from Barra. She was voted Best Gaelic Singer of the Year in the 2004 BBC Scots Trad Music Awards and at HebCelt she will perform as part of the Maggie MacInnes Trio with Brian McAlpine (of Session A9) on keyboards and accordion and Anna Massie (of Blazin' Fiddles).

Caroline Maclennan, the festival director, said: “We are passionate about protecting and developing our unique cultural heritage. The Gaelic Showcase is one way we can promote this wonderful asset by bringing together some well-established performers, who have maintained the traditions of Gaelic music and song over many years, and some emerging talent who are adding new riches to this treasure trove.”

Composer James MacMillan has launched a new music festival, The Cumnock Tryst, which will take place in his home town of Cumnock in Ayrshire, in October. James MacMillan will be Artistic Director and violinist, Nicola Benedetti, also from Ayrshire, is to be the Patron of the Festival.

It is hoped that The Cumnock Tryst will become an annual event with concerts in venues in and around the town. The programme will feature some of the finest, international classical artists, as well as music and musicians from different backgrounds both stylistically and socially. The Cumnock Tryst aims to make its strong commitment to the community at the heart of

all its activities, for instance involving young people at school and college, amateur choirs and local bands.

James MacMillan says “My earliest musical experiences were of making music with friends, relatives, schoolmates and teachers in Cumnock. Because of these seminal experiences I have followed a life of music, composing and working with some of the most wonderful musicians of our time all over the world. Now I want to bring something of that back. I have participated in festivals, large and small, in many countries. In the last century two British composers have established festivals in towns that were dear to them. One was Benjamin Britten whose influence on me as a youngster was a beacon of inspiration. He established the festival in Aldeburgh. The other was Peter Maxwell Davies who has been a mentor and friend over the last few decades. He established the St Magnus Festival in Orkney. My memories of early St Magnus Festivals have lived with me and have been incubated in my mind these many years, as the germ of an idea which could be reborn here in Cumnock.”

Two strong traditions of musical life in Cumnock have been brass music and choral music and these two strands will be running themes in The Cumnock Tryst. The opening concert in October

will be given by one of the finest choirs in the world and another event that weekend will be of immense significance to the thriving brass band world of Ayrshire and beyond.

A star-studded line-up led a powerful musical tribute to Paisley songwriting legend Gerry Rafferty during a unique event to honour the singer in his home town. Paisley Town Hall provided a spectacular setting as a spellbound capacity crowd was treated to an evening of Gerry’s greatest hits by his family, friends and fans.

The show was the centerpiece of the week-long Bring it all Home festival inspired by Gerry’s songwriting legacy, which took place at various venues in Paisley. It took place on what would have been his 67th birthday - was directed and compered by his lifelong friend and collaborator Rab Noakes.

Featured artists Barbara Dickson, Roddy Hart, Emma Pollock and Siobhan Wilson all took turns as the lead singer, with Gerry’s daughter Martha

and other family members providing backing vocals on various songs. A 24-piece orchestra made up by members of the RSNO added an extra musical layer as songs spanning Gerry’s career – from his early Humblebums days through to his million-selling solo work - were reworked.

The concert opened with the aptly-titled New Street Blues – inspired by his home town – with international hit such as Baker Street and Right Down the Line following. Between songs, the artists talked of how Gerry’s work had helped inspire theirs, with Rab Noakes adding a personal touch with the tale of how the pair had first met as up-and-coming musicians – introduced by Billy Connolly – back in 1969.

Bring it all Home took place alongside a popular exhibition into Gerry’s life and work, which will run at Paisley Museum until 18 May.

The Renfrewshire-Council-supported-festival also featured a Celebration of Scottish Songwriting Show in Paisley Town Hall featuring Midge Ure, James Grant, Hamish Stuart and Karine Polwart. Each artist performed some of their own songs, plus other material from their favourite Scottish performers, with words music from artists as diverse as Deacon Blue,

Frightened Rabbit, Cream and Robert Burns all featuring. Other artists to play over the week included Mary Gauthier, Paul Brady and Kathryn Williams, while there was a series of songwriting masterclasses designed to pass on tips to budding musicians.

Renfrewshire’s Provost Anne Hall said: “It was a wonderful occasion and there could be no more fitting setting for this festival than here in Gerry’s home town.

“This was a great way for the people of Paisley to celebrate the life and work of one of the town’s greatest sons.

“We are very proud of the town’s cultural and musical heritage and Gerry’s work takes its place at the forefront of that tradition.”

The event was organised by Renfrewshire Council, with support from Homecoming Scotland, Creative Scotland and the Rafferty family.
