What is Wheelchair Softball? Wheelchair softball was born 30 years ago
in the Midwest by a few individuals with spi-
nal cord injuries and lower extremity impair-
ments, who still wanted to enjoy America's
greatest pastime. These individuals needed
to develop a way of playing without the full
use of their legs that would allow easy ma-
neuverability in a wheelchair and keep the
fast pace of softball.
The game is played on hard surfaces, such
as parking lots, instead of the traditional
grass infield. It is played with a 16 Clincher
softball, which allows the athlete to keep
one hand on the wheelchair while catching the
ball without a glove. Amateur Softball Association
rules apply, except for minor adaptations for the
wheelchair..
MWAA The Minnesota Wheelchair Athletic Association
(MWAA) was founded in 1994 by Jon Speak. He
began the organization with the goal of using
wheelchair athletics to provide the opportunity for
youth and adults with physical disabilities to par-
ticipate in a lifetime of recreational activity while
developing fundamental social, physical, commu-
nication and leadership skills.
Participating in wheelchair\disabled sports forces
much of these athletes into situations where they
need to learn and practice communication, coop-
eration, and leadership skills. They learn to re-
spect themselves and the others on the team.
They learn the value of accountability and trans-
versely begin to take on more responsibilities in
their own lives. All of this, while having fun!
