SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTES

Sounders FC on Tuesday announced that it has signed defender Saad Abdul-Salaam. Prior to signing the deal, Seattle acquired his rights from New York City FC in exchange for $50,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM). Abdul-Salaam had been with Sounders FC during 2019 preseason as a guest player prior to signing a contract.

Abdul-Salaam, 27, has started 49 of his 68 appearances since joining the league in 2015, recording one goal and 10 assists. Sporting Kansas City made him the 12th overall selection in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of Akron. He spent three seasons with SKC, including a 2016 campaign in which he recorded career highs in games played (30), starts (26) and assists (6). Following the 2017 season, Abdul-Salaam was traded to New York City FC, where he recorded two assists in four appearances last season before being loaned to USL side Phoenix Rising FC for the remainder of 2018.

“We are pleased to welcome Saad officially into the club, after he showed his diverse skillset during preseason camp,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “Saad has experience both at fullback and in central defense, and his athleticism will serve our team well across our backline. We are excited to see what he brings to the squad over the course of the season.”

Sounders FC on Tuesday announced that it has released defender Jordan McCrary. McCrary started 13 of his 20 appearances for Sounders FC across all competitions last season, his lone campaign with the club.

“We would like to thank Jordan for his contributions in Seattle,” said Sounders FC General Manager & President of Soccer Garth Lagerwey. “Jordan was a true professional during his time with us and we wish him nothing but success on his next career step.” McCrary, 25, started nine of his 15 MLS regular-season appearances for Seattle after signing with the club prior to the 2018 season. He also started and played a full 90 minutes in all four of Seattle’s matches in 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League Play, in addition to a substitute appearance in the second leg of the 2018 Western Conference Semifinals vs. Portland.

Sounders FC on Monday unveiled its new secondary kit for the 2019 Major League Soccer season, releasing the design in conjunction with MLS and adidas at a special reveal event at Zulily headquarters in Seattle. Named “Nightfall,” the all-black kit features striking pink accents along the sleeves and sides, as well as a unique jock tag and neck tape. Nightfall replaces the previous Heritage secondary option and will serve primarily as Seattle’s away kit, though it will be worn at a select home game announced later this season.

In contrast to Seattle’s signature Rave Green primary kit, the new secondary kit’s darker profile evokes a different dimension to the vibrant atmosphere on matchday. The club and adidas drew inspiration for Nightfall from the evening sky over CenturyLink Field during an iconic match in Sounders FC history, as Seattle faced rival Portland in front of 64,207 home fans on July 13, 2014. The pink sky highlighted an amazing game in which Clint Dempsey and Marco Pappa led the team to victory with a goal apiece.

In addition to the distinctive side striping elements, Nightfall features a new jock tag depicting two iconic silhouettes: The CenturyLink Field arches set against the background of Mount Rainier. Additionally, the neck tape proclaims “Cascades to Sea,” echoing the overall theme of the kit that celebrates the unique wild beauty of the region.

Proceeds benefit RAVE’s mission of building small fields for free play and investing in programs that use soccer as a vehicle to inspire youth and strengthen communities. Matchday host Ken Carson and Sound Wave will be on hand in Occidental Park to get fans fired up prior to the March.

Stadium gates open at 5:30 p.m. PT and fans visiting Soccer Celebration in the northwest concourse should be sure to stop by the Premera Blue Cross booth to receive autographs from members of Sounders FC’s 2009 inau-gural squad. SOUNDERS GO CARBON NEUTRAL

Seattle Sounders FC announced that as part of its ongoing dedication to leading the way in sustainable, green practices, the club is going carbon neutral in 2019 and beyond, marking it as the first professional soccer team in North America to do so. Through this commitment, Sounders FC pledges that its operations will make no net contribution to atmospheric carbon dioxide, the leading cause of the climate crisis.

To begin its path to carbon neutrality, the club worked with Seattle-based Sustainable Business Consulting to calculate its greenhouse gas emissions and develop plans to reduce its impacts where possible. For sources unable to be eliminated - such as team travel for matches, scouting and other busi-ness - Sounders FC is offsetting the club’s emissions through the Evergreen Carbon Capture (ECC) program of Forterra, a nonprofit that works for regional sustainability. Using the club’s contribution to ECC, Forterra and its partner DIRT Corps are joining with the team and its fans to plant hundreds of trees in a part of the region that needs added tree cover. This not only reduces carbon dioxide, but enhances air and water quality.

In collaboration with Sustainable Business Consulting, the club first developed plans to reduce emissions where possible. After taking those steps, it looked for ways to mitigate the emission sources that remained, allowing Sounders FC to lower its climate impact beyond what can currently be achieved through internal efforts. By working with Forterra’s Evergreen Carbon Capture program, the Rave Green are able to not only directly impact the Puget Sound region by reducing carbon pollution and improving air and water quality, but to support a local non-profit and the local economy while creating meaningful hands-on projects in which the team and its staff, fans and partners can all participate.

Carbon neutrality serves a new step forward for Sounders FC, though the club has been dedicated to following sustainable practices in recent years, including the formation of an internal employee “Green Team” that discusses and implements green practices in the team offices and working closely with local nonprofit Washington Green Schools to find ways to empower youth to adopt sustainable lifestyles. Last season, Sounders FC and Washington Green Schools launched the “Rave Green Certification” program for schools across Washington State as a way to recognize schools that have demonstrated outstanding environmental leadership.

The family of former Head Coach Sigi Schmid (above) will be present as Sounders FC honors the life of its first MLS manager prior to the match on Saturday with the presentation of a Golden Scarf.

HEAD COACH BRIAN SCHMETZERAfter leading Sounders FC to one of the most improbable comebacks in MLS history, Brian Schmetzer was named the club’s second-ever Head Coach on November 2, 2016. Upon assuming the interim manager role on July 26, 2016 following the departure of Sigi Schmid, Seattle sat in ninth place in the Western Conference with a 6-12-2 record. Under Schmetzer, Sounders FC finished the season with an 8-2-4 record and a fourth-place finish, becoming the first team in MLS history to make the MLS Cup Playoffs after having 20 or fewer points through the first 20 matches of the season. He is the first coach in MLS history to lead his team to the MLS Cup title after assuming the Head Coach position midseason.

In his first full season as Sounders FC’s Head Coach, Schmetzer led Sounders FC to another great season in 2017. After finishing tied atop the Western Con-ference with Portland in the regular season, the Rave Green cruised through the Western Conference playoffs and advanced to the club’s second consecu-tive MLS Cup, this time falling to Toronto FC 2-0 at BMO Field. In 2018, he led Sounders FC to its record 10th consecutive postseason appearance after go-ing 14-2-1 in the second half of the campaign, good for 2.53 points per game, the highest half-season average in league history, before ultimately falling to the Timbers in the Western Conference Semifinals.

A longtime Sounders FC assistant and former USL Sounders manager, Schmetzer entered his eighth season as Top Assistant Coach in 2016, a position he retained since December 22, 2008. He is one of the Puget Sound soccer community’s most recognizable and respected figures after playing and coaching for the region’s top professional franchises since 1980.

Schmetzer served seven seasons as the Head Coach of the Sounders’ United Soccer League’s First Division club from 2002-2008 before making the jump to MLS. He guided Seattle to USL-1 championships in 2005 and 2007, and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinal advancements in 2007 and 2008.

Schmetzer has 16 years of coaching experience and a 15-year background playing at the professional level. He was a member of six championship teams during that span. In addition to the two USL championships, his teams also twice won the Commissioner’s Cup for the league’s best record (2002, 2007), while also qualifying for the playoffs six of seven years. He was chosen USL-1 Coach of the Year in 2002 after going 23-4-1. The Sounders were league runners-up in 2004. His overall regular season record in the USL era was 100-57-41.

Previously, he was assistant to former United States National Team defender Fernando Clavijo with the Seattle SeaDogs from 1996-1997. Seattle won the Conti-nental Indoor Soccer League title in 1997.

A Seattle native, Schmetzer was coached by his father, Walt, as a youth. His team won seven out of 10 state youth championships. He signed with the Sounders’ North American Soccer League franchise following his graduation from Seattle’s Nathan Hale High School in 1980. He played three seasons as a midfielder for Seattle before going to Tulsa for the final NASL season in 1984.

Schmetzer signed with the San Diego Sockers in 1984 and played seven seasons in the Major Indoor Soccer League with San Diego (1984-1988), Tacoma (1988-1990) and St. Louis (1990-1991). He was a member of San Diego’s MISL cham-pionship teams in 1985, 1986 and 1988. He returned to Seattle for the Sounders’ inaugural A-League season in 1994 before completing his playing career with the SeaDogs from 1995-1996.

In 1985, Schmetzer played on loan to FC Seattle, scoring twice in a 2-1 friendly win over Brazil’s Santos. While with Tacoma and FC Seattle, Schmetzer’s teammates included younger brothers Andy and Walter.

Schmetzer and his wife Kristine have six children between them.

We Got Here in Record Time• FC Cincinnati was awarded and MLS expansion club on May 29, 2018 - just 277 days

before the Orange and Blue are set to open league play this Saturday• That is the third-fastest time in league history between the announcement of a club’s

expansion team to when it offi cially starts play• This is the fastest among most recent expansion phase (2009-present) ... the shortest

window between announcement and starting play has been 262 days (Real Salt Lake, 2005), 14 seasons ago

Inaugural Season in MLS Arrives • FC Cincinnati will open their fi rst season as an MLS franchise on Saturday night when

they play Seattle Sounders FC• Saturday’s match will mark the fourth consecutive season opener away from Nippert

Stadium for the Orange and Blue ... as a USL team, FCC opened each of its three seasons at Charleston

• FCC is 1-2-0 all-time in season openers during its USL days, claiming their fi rst win in an opener in 2018

• In three USL seasons, FC Cincinnati posted a 51-19-26 record in regular-season matches.

No Slack from the Schedule-Makers• Cincinnati got no help from the MLS schedule makers with its inaugural slate, facing

MLS Cup Playoffs qualifi ers in nine of its fi rst 10 games• Additionally, Cincy will play seven of its fi rst 11 games on the road• After starting its MLS chapter in front of what could be 50,000+ fans in Seattle, FCC

will then play in front of 70,000+ fans at MLS Cup champion Atlanta in Week 2• Cincy will debut at home in front of 30,000+ fans at Nippert Stadium in Week 3 against

MLS Cup fi nalist Portland, before making a trip to the notoriously tough Gillette Stadi-um and the New England Revolution in Week 4

• FCC will host Philadelphia (Week 5) and Sporting Kansas City (Week 6) in back-to-back weeks, before then traveling to LAFC in Week 7

• After returning from the West Coast, Cincinnati will host Real Salt Lake (Week 8), before undertaking a three-game, 10-day road trip to New York Red Bulls (Week 9), Philadelphia (midweek Week 10) and San Jose (Week 10)

Cincinnati: “The Portland of the East”• ESPN analyst has previously called Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium “the Portland of the

East” for its raucous, record-setting crowds and game day atmosphere• FCC is just about to push past the 20,000 season-ticket mark for the 2019 season -

and also already eclipsed its STM record of 18,007 from the 2018 USL season• The club’s 18,007 STMs in 2018 is the USL record ... all of those season tickets are full

season tickets, and do not represent any FSE (full-season equivalents)• Cincinnati’s average attendance of 25,717 in 2018 more than doubled the second-place

USL team (Sacramento) and would have represented the fourth-highest average attendance in MLS behind Atlanta (53,002), Seattle (40,641) and Toronto (26,628)

• Cincinnati executives are hoping to average about 28,000 fans per game in 2019

West End Stadium to Come to Life After Zoning Approval• Contractors of FC Cincinnati’s future home - West End Stadium - will now formally

start construction after the Cincinnati City Council unanimously approved a key zon-ing change on Thursday, Feb. 21 - a key hurdle before actual construction could start

• The $250+ million, privately funded stadium will seat approximately 26,000 fans and is expected to remain on schedule and open on time for its March 2021 target

• The formal groundbreaking ceremony - which MLS Commissioner Don Garber attend-ed - was held on Dec. 19, 2018

• Among the design considerations are 50 suites (most in MLS not in an NFL stadium), 4,500+ premium seats among a variety of club spaces, and a safe-standing support-ers section that will rise from fi eld-level to the top of the stadium on one end with capacity for more than 3,000 fans

New Training Digs Also Under Construction• In addition to West End Stadium, FCC is also constructing a $30+ million, state-of-

the-art training facility in Milford, Ohio - about 15 miles from downtown Cincinnati• When completed this August, The Mercy Health Training Center will feature a 34,000

square foot facility on 24 acres just off I-275• It will have three full-size, lighted playing fi elds - two natural grass and one artifi cial

turf - plus a separate dedicated goalkeepers area• Inside, the Mercy Health Training Center will house the FCC fi rst team and Academy,

as well as the technical staff, soccer operations and communications staffs, as well as members of other FCC departments

• It will also include a full-time dining facility, team lounge, auditorium and media work space, production studio, strength and conditioning gym, medical areas, equipment studio and storage, plus locker rooms, staff rooms and meeting spaces - as well as a barber shop

• While the MHTC is under construction, FCC is currently training out of a custom-built, 8,000 square foot facility on the property that includes the locker room, team lounge, equipment suite, medical suite and offi ces for the coaches and Milford-based staff

Nippert Also Got Offseason Makeover• Nippert Stadium, where FCC will continue to play for the next two seasons while West

End Stadium is under construction, has also received a makeover this offseason• FCC pulled out the three-year old artifi cial surface and has laid a new surface from

The Motz Group ... the same turf surface is also already installed at the Mercy Health Training Center

• Additionally, Cincy renovated its old locker room to make it a game day suite for vis-iting teams ... at the same time, the club transformed it old team lounge and meeting room into its new game day locker room suite

• The team also created a new Player Family Room and media area off the fi eld level for photographers, videographers and postgame press conferences

• On the fi eld, the team has added another 120 feet of digital display boards at fi eld level along the end lines

• On the concourse, the club will announce shortly several new naming partners for entry gates at the stadium

Construction Costs Matter• Between construction and land acquisition for West End Stadium, construction for

the Mercy Health Training Center and upgrades to Nippert Stadium, FCC has undertak-en almost $400M in simultaneous construction projects this off season

First-Ever Competitive Match in Pacific Time Zone• FC Cincinnati will play its fi rst-ever competitive match in the Pacifi c time zone when

the club travels to Seattle for the season opener• As a USL club, the Orange and Blue played a preseason match at Sacramento Republic

FC on March 4, 2017• FC Cincinnati is set to play three regular-season matches in the Pacifi c time zone

this season: at Seattle (March 2), at LAFC (April 13) and at San Jose (May 4)

FCC to be Road-Tested Early ...• FC Cincinnati opens their 2019 MLS regular-season schedule with 10 of their fi rst 16
