INSULATORS AND BUSBAR SUPPORTS

ELECTRODYNAMIC EFFORTS BETWEEN LEADS

The design of an electric system or part of it implies the choice of the structure as well as the elements it consists of. Among these, insulators play a fundamental role in reducing the risks caused by electrical stress to acceptable values. There are two types of fundamental parameters to identify an insulator: electrical and mechanical parameters.• Electrical parameters Nominal design voltage Nominal insulation voltage• Mechanical parameter Ultimate flexural strength valueWhen design bar supporting systems, the electrodynamic efforts that are consequent to the passage of current must be taken into consideration. In particular, the greatest efforts on which the related insulating supports need to be proportioned, are those due to short circuit currents. The nomograms below allow to identify the “ultimate flexural strength value” (which ensures a degree of safety higher than or equal to 2.5) of the bar system, thus enable to select the most suitable insulator support.

TECHNICAL GUIDEInsulators

Nomogram 1

Determination of the stress F by unit of length

data required: I = short circuit current D = distance between phasesExample: Icc = 15 kA (in AC) D = 7 cm result from the nomogram: F 150 daN/m

Nomogram 2

Determination of the distance L between supports

data required: F = stress by unit of length (obtained from the previous nomogram) W = module of longitudinal and transversal resistance of the bars according to X-X or Y-Y, respectively (obtainable on the basis of the dimensions and the position of the bar, whether horizontal or vertical)Example: F 150 daN/m W = 0.5 cm3 (50 x 8 vertical position) result from nomogram: L 0.7 m

TECHNICAL GUIDEInsulators

Nomogram 3

Determination of the ultimate flexure strength value P

data required: F = stress by unit of length L = distance between supports (obtained from the previous nomogram)

Example: F 150 daN/m L 0.7 m (vertical position) result from nonogram: P 500 daN (for bar system in vertical position)

Once the P value has been defined, it is possible to identify the most suitable insulator by consulting in the special tables of each single article (flexure strength columns) a value that is higher than or similar to the one obtained with Nomogram 3

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Series of insulators designed to be used as supports or spacers of electrically active parts such as bars or leads used to create LV and MV electric systems. Their typical bell shape makes them particularly suitable to be used in environments with a high percentage of humidity or a high degree of fine suspended dust.Indeed, the profile structure provides a creepage distance that satisfies the rated voltage as well as humidity runoff and the non continuous formation of dust deposits.Made of polyester resin with the addition of glass fibres, they guarantee a high mechanical and electrical resistance over time.On request the non-absorbing and highly self-extinguishing material used can be provided in its antiacid version, which is particularly suitable for use in contaminated atmospheres. On both resting sides the insulators feature a brass threaded female insert that, by means of different types of special headless screws, allows the coupling with the parts concerned.• Colour: red RAL-3002 (a different colour can be provided on request in case of large orders)• Arc resistance: > 180 s - ASTM D-495• Material: self-extinguishing in class V0 in according to the UL-94 standard• Operating temperature: -40 °C ÷ +130 °C• Water absorption: < 0.2% - ASTM D-570• For the fastening please refer to the section “GV series accessories”

DPS/CPS SERIES

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Series of insulators designed to be used as supports or spacers of electrically active parts such as the bars used to create panels.Made of polyester resin with the addition of glass fibres, they guarantee a high mechanical and electrical resistance over time. Furthermore, the material used is non absorbing and highly self-extinguishing.On both resting sides the insulators feature a brass or white iron zincate threaded female insert that, by means of diffe-rent types of special headless screws, allows the coupling with the parts concerned. Thanks to the special shape of the metallic insert (which differs from the CP-DP series as it protrudes by 2 mm), they are used in those cases when a washer needs to be interposed to increase the contact surface.• Colour: red RAL-3002 (a different colour can be provided on request in case of large orders)• Arc resistance: > 180 s - ASTM D-495• Material: self-extinguishing in class VO (1.6 mm) according to the UL-94 standard• Operating temperature: -40 °C ÷ +130 °C• Water absorption: < 0.2% - ASTM D-570• Tracking resistance: 3 W/min - ASTM D-2302• For the fastening please refer to the section “GV series accessories”

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Series of bushing insulators designed to be used as elements of electrical connection between the internal and exter-nal parts of the equipment. Available in red and black, they differ for the terminal element for the electrical connection of the leads, which is a nut element. The insulator consists of two insulating parts, easily plugged together, made of polyester resin with glass fibres and locked by a rod that also acts as a conducting element between the parts, by means of two nuts. For models up to 80 A one of the nuts is integral with the rod and made of brass. For superior currents, rods and nuts are made of zinc coated soft iron. The particular construction of the insulating parts and the rod allows the leads (fastened to the rod by zinc-chromium plated steel nuts) to be connected and disconnected both by one part or the other of the bushing insulator without turn or unlock the insulator from the mounting.• Standard colour: red RAL-3002 A different colour can be provided for large orders.• Arc resistance: > 180 s - ASTM D-495• Material: self-extinguishing in class VO (1.6 mm) according to the UL-94 standard• Operating temperature: -40 °C ÷ +130 °C• Water absorption: < 0.2% - ASTM D-570• Tracking resistance: 3 W/min - ASTM D-2302

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS

Series of insulators designed to be used as a busbar support element in three-phase systems and three-phase plus neutral systems. The series consists of two families, each divided into four different measurements dimensionally related to the sections of the bars, four for the three-phase system and four for the three-phase plus neutral system. The insulator consists of two crossbars on which socket slots are obtained whose width, which can be completed with a simple and patented system of rider spacers, allows the different bar sections to be adapted by always keeping the axle base constant between the phases. Everything is fitted with threaded shafts, washers and zinc coated nuts for fastening to the frame and the clamping of the two crossbars. Made of polyester resin with the addition of a high percentage of glass fibres, they guarantee a high electrodynamic resistance over time in case of faulty currents and an excellent performance in contaminated atmospheres.• Colour: red RAL-3002 (a different colour can be provided on request in case of large orders)• Arc resistance: > 120 s - ASTM D-495• Material: self-extinguishing in class VO (3.2 mm) according to the UL-94 standard• Operating temperature: -40 °C ÷ +130 °C• Water absorption: < 0.15% - UNI 4292• Tracking resistance: 300 W/min - ASTM D-2303• Dielectric rigidity: 12 kV/mm - UNI 4291• Shock resistance: 25 kJ/m2 - UNI 6062• Expansion coefficient: 2x10-5 °C - UNI 6061• AC/DC operating voltage: 750/900 V• Max rated voltage at 50 Hz for 1 min: 3 kV• Max rated pulse voltage: 8 kV
